Spycam Minute: Juneteeneth Celebrated in Easton
Even with the famous Eastern Shore summer heat in evidence, the Juneteenth celebration at the Academy Art Museum didn't miss a beat on Saturday afternoon. With food, education programs and music from the likes of Easton Middle School Choir, the Bay One Hundred Christian Men Choir, Scott’s United Methodist Church Choir and Praise Dancers, Building Young African-American Minds (BAAM), the Second Generation Community Chorus and the Skher Brown Dance Troupe
Special recognition was given to the Robert Moton High School Alumni Association for their work in keeping history alive for the former African-American school in Easton.
The event was hosted by the Academy Art Museum and organized by the Frederick Douglass Honor Society.
The Talbot Spy cam, including the use of the new Spy drone, captured some of the highlights.

About the exhibition:
Sympathetic Magic is an exhibition of Canadian art that looks at the relationship between representations of the land and national identity. Tropes of northern wilderness persist in the public imagination despite seismic changes in the social and physical landscape. Through the work of four contemporary artists – Adad Hannah, Ken Lum, Kevin Schmidt and Raymond Boisjoly – the exhibition seeks to maneuver through the real and imaginative terrain of the north and expand on concepts of territory, nationhood, and identity.
About the artist:
Raymond Boisjoly (born in Langley, British Columbia, 1981) is an artist of Haida and Québécois descent, living and working in Vancouver. He completed his undergraduate studies at Emily Carr University of Art and Design and holds an MFA from University of British Columbia. Boisjoly's practice engages with issues of aboriginality, language as cultural practice, and the experiential aspects of materiality. He has presented work in solo and group exhibitions in Canada and the United States including exhibitions at Simon Fraser University, Catriona Jeffries Gallery, and The Contemporary Art Gallery, all in Vancouver; The Power Plant, Toronto; Carleton University Art Gallery, Ottawa; Platform centre for photographic and digital arts, Winnipeg; and Western Bridge, Seattle. Boisjoly is participating in SITE Santa Fe, and La Biennale de Montréal. This fall, Boisjoly will serve as Lead Faculty for “In Kind” Negotiations, a thematic residency at the Banff Centre.

Spy Profile: Hugh Grunden and the Wonder of Easton Utilities
Just imagine for a moment that Easton Utilities (EU) was a profit-driven corporation with a board of directors and shareholders demanding increasingly higher profit margins every quarter. Under this hypothetical scenario, it's quite likely your bill for such things like electricity, cable and internet access would at least average or perhaps exceed national market prices to achieve that objective.
And if this formula were applied last year, those charges would have amounted to almost $10.5 million from the pockets of Talbot County customers. In more simple terms, that would be $10.5 million not going to cover family expenses, support local charities, or improve community services.
Thank goodness for local residents, Easton Utilities is not required play that particular game.
As an entity that was created out of the Town of Easton's desire to control utilities and their costs in their community, the only stakeholder that Easton Utilities needs to please is the municipality through the Easton Utilities Commission. And the way EU makes those folks happy is to make sure that their pricing is below average market value and that they apply whatever profit they do make into capital improvements and infrastructure maintenance.
And while Easton Utilities does not have the same requirements that a traditional business might have, it does not mean that EU is not run like a business. In fact, it is regarded by many as one of the most efficient and creatively-led corporations on the Eastern Shore.
It now manages seven companies that include electricity, cable, internet, phone, water, wastewater, and lastly, a new entrepreneurial division called IT Professional Services which monetizes the software EU has developed to manage their divisions by selling it to other utility corporations throughout the United States.
Behind the wheel of this extraordinary organization is CEO Hugh Grunden, who, with 35 years of experience with EU, has led the company to become one the most respected in the industry.
The Spy had the opportunity to chat with this Easton-native about the arch of change during his tenure and how the future looks for utilities a few weeks ago in Easton.
Rick Fleury: Inspired by Cape Cod
Artist Rick Fleury shares his contemporary landscape paintings of Cape Cod in an inspiring video on the ways he strives to share the peace and abundant beauty found in the natural world so that it may be preserved and valued for all time.
Fleury is known internationally for his minimalist style of capturing the purity of the landscape on canvas and copper.
The video features music by Cape Cod jazz musician and composer Dan Sullivan.
Born and raised in Massachusetts, Rick Fleury is devoting his professional life to painting coastal landscapes of New England -- leaving behind successful careers as a journalist and a New York executive officer and creative director in advertising and public relations.
His minimalist style of landscape, known and collected internationally, is widely associated with Cape Cod and New England. He is a member of the Copley Society, the oldest non-profit art association in the United States. In a rare, if not exclusive situation, rather than go through the arduous and competitive process of applying for membership in this prestigious organization, the Copley Society sought Rick out in his studio and asked him to become a member in 2006.
Rick has been honored with solo exhibitions at the Cape Cod Museum of Art and through the Copley Society.
His work is in the permanent collections of the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Cahoon Museum of American Art, Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's, Bessemer Trust Company, Cape Cod Hospital/Cape Cod Healthcare, and other distinguished corporate and private collections.
He has taught at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and through the Copley Society of Art.
Rick, a year-round artist on Cape Cod since 1997, lives and works in Eastham.
The purity of the landscape is the subject of his work, and the beauty of nature and wide open space so often found on Cape Cod is what has inspired him as an artist.
If I create pause long enough for the viewer to reflect and appreciate the beauty that is Cape Cod, then I have achieved success in my work. If I convey that beauty in a new or unexpected way, even better.

A Founder Looks Back: Tim Junkin and the Mid-Shore River Conservancy
Tim Junkin had only one significant advantage when he returned to Talbot County to create what is now the MidShore River Conservancy. The powerhouse D.C. trial attorney had graduated from Easton High School as a result of his father's love affair with the Eastern Shore.
Beyond that simple but important link, Junkin had no significant conservation experience, no background in nonprofit management, and a less than a complete understanding of the complex Chesapeake ecosystem when he agreed to work with the Waterkeeper Alliance to create a local organization to protect and preserve the Choptank, Miles and Wye Rivers.
But inexperience had never been much of a hindrance in Tim's professional life. The Georgetown-educated lawyer had started one of Washington's top law firms with a similar lack of a traditional background to do so. It also didn't hurt that he had established a national reputation as a writer, authoring several books based on the Eastern Shore.
Pushed by his passion to protect the rivers that had meant so much to him as a kid and remarkable self-confidence, Tim built MRC will no volunteer leadership, no staff at the same time that a worldwide recession was beginning. Not the ideal circumstances for even the most gifted entrepreneur.
Fast forward almost a decade later and MRC is now considered one of the most efficient Riverkeeper programs in the United States. With a full-time staff of ten and one of the Eastern Shore's most prominent list of board trustees, the Midshore River Conservancy runs dozens of environmental and educational programs every year serving four counties.
In his Spy interview, Tim reflects on the start of the MRC, its growing pains, and the slow but steady partnerships with farmers and watermen. While Junkin remains actively involved with his organization, he has recently turned the reins of leadership over to Jeff Horstman as MRC's new executive director and talks about the pleasure he has in watching from the sidelines as new staff creatively push the organization to new levels of success.

Local Rotarians and College Rotaracts Team Up to Honor Heros with American Flags
With close to 100 years of serving the greater Chestertown area, the Rotary Club, and the Washington College Rotaract Club are teaming up to inaugurate a new tradition in Kent County called Flags for Heroes starting Memorial Day Weekend.
The Rotarians plan to raise funds for American flags will be proudly displayed on Washington College’s parcel located at Washington Avenue and Morgnec Road from May 20 through May 31 for Commencement Weekend and Memorial Day Weekend. A list of flag sponsors and their heroes will appear in local publications for Memorial Day Weekend and is 100% tax deductible. All net proceeds will support local veteran and other worthy causes.
The Spy spent a few minutes with Rotary president-elect Andrew Meehan and Washington College Rotaract Club member Lily Britt about their plans to raise funds for 200 flags by Memorial Day.

From June 23-25, the 2016 TCG National Conference: Theatre Nation will bring together over 1,000 theatre practitioners from across the globe for performances, knowledge sharing, and thought-provoking speakers. We’ll build on the success of the 2015 Cleveland Conference—our highest-rated in history—by further innovating programming like our Skills-Building Workshops and At the Intersections arcs, empowering deeper professional development and peer connection.
We’ll also seize the unique opportunity of assembling at our nation’s capitol during an election year to imagine a more central role for our art form in civic life. In a time of political polarization and civil strife, can we imagine a Theatre Nation whose borders are not bound by walls, but opened through affinities of passion and creative practice? Can we create a Theatre Nation that welcomes everyone who shares those affinities, and equitably represents them? What is our bill of rights (and responsibilities) for citizens of Theatre Nation? How might we declare our interdependence? How can our Theatre Nation model a more perfect union for our country and world? The answers to these questions can only be found through an inclusive and participatory process that engages the full diversity of our field—which means we need you.
At the heart of this work lies TCG’s vision of “A better world for theatre. A better world because of theatre.” We’ll bring that activist spirit to visit legislators on Capitol Hill. We’ll invite practitioners from across the world, because we know members of our Theatre Nation are global citizens. Pennsylvania, officially the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, is a state located in the northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. The Appalachian Mountains run through its middle. The Commonwealth is bordered by Delaware to the southeast, Maryland to the south, West Virginia to the southwest, Ohio to the west, Lake Erie and the Canadian province of Ontario to the northwest, New York to the north, and New Jersey to the east.
Pennsylvania is the 33rd-largest state by area, and the 6th-most populous state according to the last official U.S. Census count in 2010. It is the 9th-most densely populated of the 50 states. Pennsylvania's two most populous cities are Philadelphia (1,567,872), and Pittsburgh (303,625). The state capital and its 10th largest city is Harrisburg. Pennsylvania has 140 miles (225 km) of waterfront along Lake Erie and the Delaware Estuary.The state is one of the 13 original founding states of the United States; it came into being in 1681 as a result of a royal land grant to William Penn, the son of the state's namesake. Part of Pennsylvania (along the Delaware River), together with the present State of Delaware, had earlier been organized as the Colony of New Sweden. It was the second state to ratify the United States Constitution, on December 12, 1787. Independence Hall, where the United States Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution were drafted, is located in the state's largest city of Philadelphia. During the American Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg was fought in the south central region of the state. Valley Forge near Philadelphia was General Washington's headquarters during the bitter winter of 1777–78.

Prince George’s County is a county in the U.S. state of Maryland, bordering the eastern portion of Washington, D.C. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the population was 863,420, making it the second-most populous county in Maryland. Its county seat is Upper Marlboro.
Prince George’s County is included in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county is home to hundreds of churches. The county also hosts Joint Base Andrews, a U.S. military airbase, as well as the headquarters of the United States Census Bureau.
