Climb Adam's Peak in Sri Lanka

We went climbing Adams Peak(known to locals as Sri Pada) in Sri Lanka but took a few wrong turns on the way. We ended up in Ratnapura on the back side of the mountain, 5 hours by bus away from the well-traveled route from Hatton. We discovered an alternative route which is about 8KMs, and more known by Buddhist locals as a pilgrimage that some take days to climb. We were able to climb the mountain fairly quick in 7 hours. Once getting to the top we descended down into Hatton in a rainstorm and took a 5-hour shuttle back to Weligama. Legs hurt for days. Great time!

We finally did it! We hiked Adam's Peak in Sri Lanka also known as Sri Pada. It was our last big adventure in Sri Lanka. We actually made it as a first visitors in Adam's Peak. In this travel vlog we wanted to share our experience during our hiking Adam's Peak.

We were lucky to do Adams Peak in off season. There were only few tourist but no locals so it was very fast to hiking it. Did you know that Adam's Peak has around 5000 stairs?

Climbing Adam’s Peak (Sri Padaya) for Sunrise | Sri Lanka

In part 3 of my Sri Lanka travel photography vlogs I climb the sacred and legendary mountain Adam’s Peak (Sri Padaya) to take images of the sunrise from the summit. The climb started at 2am in the morning and involved walking up thousands of steps along the pilgrimage trail in the dead of night. The cultural spectacle and sunrise from the top was absolutely incredible!

ශ්‍රීපාදස්ථානය යනු සමනල කන්ද මුඳුනේ පිහිටා ඇති සිරි පතුල සහ ඒ ආශ්‍රිතව ගොඩනැගී ඇති බෞද්ධ සිද්ධස්ථානයයි. එහි බුදුරදුන්ගේ වම් සිරිපා සළකුණ පිහිටුවා අැත.ශ්‍රීපාද කන්ද සබරගමු පළාතේ රත්නපුර දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ මධ්‍යම කදුකර ප්‍රදේශයේ පිහිටා ඇත. එය මීටර 2243ක් පමණ උසය. ශ්‍රීපාදස්ථානය බෞද්ධ යන්ගේ පූජනීය වන්දනා ස්ථානයකි. ශ්‍රීපාද කන්ද අවට ප්‍රදේශය විශාල කඳු පන්ති වලින් වටවී ඇත. එහි අලි, කොටි, වලස්සු ආදී සත්වයෝ මෙන්ම ඒකදේශික සත්ව විශේෂ ද ජීවත් වෙති.ශ්‍රී පාද කන්ද වෙතට මාර්ග 6කින් පමණ ලඟා විය හැක. එම මාර්ග ලෙස රත්නපුර-පලාබද්දල, හැටන්-නල්ලතන්නි, කුරුවිට-එරත්න, මුර්යාවත්ත, මූකුවත්ත සහ මාලිම්බොඩ යන මාර්ග හැඳින්විය හැක. මෙම මාර්ග 6 අතරින්, නල්ලතන්නි හා පලාබද්දල මාර්ග 2 ඉතා ප්‍රසිද්ධය.

ශ්‍රීපාදස්ථානයේ ඇති ඓතිහාසික වටිනාකම නිසා විවිධ ජන වර්ග තමන්ට ආවේණික නම් වලින් ශ්‍රීපාදස්ථානය හදුන්වති. බෞද්ධ ජනයා ශ්‍රීපාද යන නාමය ඈත අතීතයේ පටන්ම එනම් බු.ව. 236 පෙර සිටම මෙම පූජනීය කන්ද හඳුන්වති. එය පාලි භාෂාවෙන් නිර්මාණය වූ වචනයකි. බෞද්ධයන් විශ්වාස කරන පරිදි බුදුරජාණන් වහන්සේ ශ්‍රීපාද කඳු මුදුනේ උන් වහන්සේගේ වාම සිරි පතුල සලකුණු කොට ඇත. දමිළ වැසියන් ශ්‍රීපාදස්ථානය සලකන්නේ ඔවුන්ගේ දෙවි කෙනෙකු වන ශිව දෙවියන් පා සටහන සලකුණු කොට ඇති ස්ථානය ලෙසයි. නමුත් අනෙකුත් ජනයා විශ්වාස කරන්නේ ආදම් ලෝකයට පැමිණෙන විට ඔහුගේ පා සටහන කඳු මුදුනේ සලකුණු කොට ඇති බවය. ශ්‍රීපාදස්ථානය සමනළ කන්ද ලෙසද හඳුන්වයි. එසේ හදුන්වන්නේ සමනළයන් උන්ගේ වාර්ශික සන්ක්‍රමණයේ දී ශ්‍රීපාදස්ථානයේ වාසය කරන බව සලකන බැවිනි. සුමන සමන් දෙවියන් ශ්‍රීපාදස්ථානයේ වාසය කරන බව සලකා සමන්ත කූට යන නමින් ද ශ්‍රීපාදස්ථානය හදුන්වයි. මීට අමතරව රත්නගිරි, ස්වර්ගරෝහනම් යන නම් වලින් ද ශ්‍රීපාදස්ථානය හදුන්වයි.නමුත් මෙහි සැබෑ අයිතිය සිංහල බෞද්ධයන් සතුය.එය ඔවුන්ගේ වසර 2500 අධික ඉතිහාසය පිරික්සා බැලීමේදී මනාව පැහැදිලි වේ.

ශ්‍රීපාද කඳු මුදුනට නැගීම දුෂ්කර කටයුත්තකි. ඒ සදහා පඩි දසස් ගණනක් නැඟිය යුතු අතර කඳු මුදුනට නැගීමට පැය කිහිපයක් ගත වේ. ශ්‍රීපාද වන්දනාව ආරම්භ වන්නේ සෑම වසරකම උදුවප් පොහෝ දිනයේදීය. වෙසක් පොහෝ දිනයෙන් එය අවසන් වේ. අනෙකුත් මාස වලදි ශ්‍රීපාද කන්ද නැඟීම දුෂ්කරය. එම මාස වලදී ශ්‍රීපාද කන්දට අධික වැසි ඇද හැලෙන අතර තද සුළන් හා ඝන මීදුම පවතී. ශ්‍රීපාද කන්ද නැඟීම හා බැඳුණු සාම්ප්‍රදායික ක්‍රියා පිළිවෙත් පවති. පළමු වරට ශ්‍රීපාද නඟින වන්දනාකරු කෝඩුකාරයා ලෙස හඳුන්වන අතර ඔහු සීත ගඟුල යනුවෙන් හඳුන්වන දොළ පහරෙන් නාගත යුතුය. ඉඳිකටු පහන යන නමින් හදුන්වන ස්ථානයේ දී ඉඳිකටු හා නූල් සවිකර යති. කන්ද නගින අතර තුර සැදැහැවතුන් විවිධ ජන කවි ගායන කරති. කඳු මුදුනට නැඟුණු පසු තමන් ශ්‍රීපාදස්ථානය වන්දනා කර ඇති වාර ගණන අනුව එහි ඇති ඝාණ්ඨාරය නාද කරති.

රාත්‍රී කාලයේදී ශ්‍රීපාද කන්ද තරණය කීරීම අපූර්ව අත්දැකීමකි. විදුලි බුබුලු වලින් ආලෝකමත් වූ මාර්ගය වන්දනාකරුට දිස්වන්නේ තරු කරා දිවෙන මාර්ගයක් ලෙසයි. ශ්‍රීපාද වන්දනාකරුගේ අභිප්‍රාය වන්නේ සූර්ය උදාවට ප්‍රථමයෙන් කඳු මුදුනට නැගීමය. ඉර සේවය නමින් ජන වහරේ මෙය හදුන්වන අතර කඳු මුදුනේ දී සූර්ය උදාව නැරඹීම කිසිදා අමතක නොවන අත්දැකීමකි. හිරු එළිය කඳු මුදුනට වැටී අවට තැනිතලා භූමියේ ත්‍රිකෝණාකාර සෙවණැල්ලක් පෙන්නුම් කරයි. හිරු ඉහළට නැඟීමත් සමගම සෙවනැල්ල වේගයෙන් පහතට ගමන් කරයි.එය ඉර සේවය ලෙස හඳුන්වයි.
සමනොලගිර, ශ්‍රිපාදය හා එය වැඳ පුදාගත් රජවරු පිළිබඳ සඳහන් සෙල් ලිපි ගණනාවකි. මහාවංශය, දීපවංශය, චූලවංශය, ආදි වංශ කතාවල හා රාජාවලිය, දඹදෙණි යුගයේ ලියඅවුණු සමන්ත කූට වර්ණාවේද කෝට්ටේ යුගයේ ලියැවුණු ග්‍රන්ථ ගණනාවකද දක්නට පුළුවන.ශ්‍රී පාදය පිලිබඳ මුලින්ම ලිඛිත සාක්ෂි හමුවන්නේ 4 වැනි සියවසේ රචිත පුරාතන ග්‍රන්ථයක් වන දීපවංශයේය. දීපවංශයේ, ශ්‍රී පාදය හඳුන්වා ඇත්තේ 'සමන්ත කූඨ' ලෙසිනි.තවද 5 වැනි සියවසේ රචිත මහාවංශයේ, බුදුන් වහන්සේ ශ්‍රී පාද කඳු මුදුනට වැඩි බව සඳහන් වේ.

Sri Padaya (Adams Peak) via Sandagalthenna - Rajamale - Moray Estate - OFF SEASON

It's a Holly place called Sandagalathenna which is a large flat rocky area where you see the magnificent view of Sri Pada .It is said ancient people had done some rituals from this place specially at night time bathing under the milky rays of the moon. (SANDA + GALA + THENNA) .One can imagine the magical view when the whole area is lighten with moon rays.
