I stayed at the Adare Manor town houses a couple of time on my many visits to Shannon, Ireland for work. This is the manor house on the grounds.

Le château de Desmond est situé à 200 m du monastère augustinien, en bordure de la rivière Maigue.
Nous nous y sommes donc rendus à pied. La prudence est de mise car la route est très étroite et la circulation est plutôt dense.
Lors de notre passage, la visite du château était impossible car le château était fermé. C'est pourquoi nous y avons passé peu de temps.
Cependant, de juin à septembre, la visite du château est possible. Il est alors essentiel d'effectuer une réservation au préalable sur le site internet ou directement à la réception de l'Adare Heritage Centre.
Il s'agit d'une visite guidée en anglais d'une durée d'environ 90 minutes. Des options multilingues sont disponibles sur demande.
La construction du château remonte au début du XIIIe siècle. Son emplacement lui a valu de devenir une forteresse stratégique.
Même si aujourd'hui le château est en ruines, il mérite d'être visité. On peut y découvrir les vestiges d'anciennes salles ayant abrité des chambres, une cuisine et une boulangerie.
Le site comprend également un donjon carré ainsi qu'un quartier fortifié entouré par un fossé.
Le château a appartenu durant presque 3 siècles aux comtes de Kildare, i.e. jusqu'à la rébellion de 1536 où celui-ci a alors été confisqué et accordé aux comtes de Desmond, d'où son nom actuel.

My 3 friends and I went to Adare in September 2015 through Great Value Vacations, which we purchased through Groupon. It was a great purchase!
