The Adirondack Carousel and The Adirondack Scenic Railroad
This video was taken on September 21, 2012 at about 12:15 p.m. showing the close physical relationship of the Adirondack Carousel in the William Morris Park and the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. One sees the Adirondack Scenic Railroad train leaving the Union Station in downtown Saranac Lake, N.Y. on its first return trip of the day to Lake Placid, N.Y. The economic relationship of the carousel and the railroad is a symbiotic one from which both greatly benefit, as do the business communities of Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, N.Y. This same railroad line's tracks extend all the way to Utica, N.Y. where they directly connect to Amtrak, although at the present time the 80 miles of track between Saranac Lake and Thendara, N.Y. are out-of-service trackage and cannot be used at present for passenger service. However these tracks could easily be restored, as earlier the tracks between Snow Junction and Thendara, N.Y., and Lake Placid and Saranac Lake were restored. This would give the North Country direct railroad access to the rest of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Adirondack Carousel is located at the corner of Depot Street and Bloomingdale Avenue (New York State Route 3), and Saranac Lake Union Railroad Depot is located on Depot Street approximately 600 feet from the Carousel. One can see in the video that the only thing that separates the northbound (in railroad terms) passenger loading platform from the lawn which surrounds the carousel is a chain link fence.
New York Central ALCO RS-3 No. 8223 by MTH Electric Trains exclusively for Jr Junction Train & Hobby
This O gauge 3-RAIL model of the famous New York Central Alco RS-3 #8223 is a special custom-run release exclusively available from Jr Junction Train & Hobby. Released in commemoration of our 20th year in business and in honor of the prototype locomotive owner Albert Kallfelz, $50.00 from the sale of each locomotive will be donated to the Central New York Chapter, National Railway Historical Society Inc. to fund their continual restoration of antique railroad equipment.
Locomotive 8223 was the first RS-3 delivered to the New York Central Railroad by the American Locomotive Co. (ALCo) as a class DRSP-6A diesel in August of 1950. It became Penn Central in 1966 and finally Amtrak in 1976. It spent much of its life in mainline and branch line service but was most often found in the upstate New York region. Railroad enthusiast Albert Kallfelz purchased this locomotive from Amtrak and with assistance of others fully restored it to operation and reapplied the classic lightning stripe decoration. For many years it served faithfully as the flagship excursion power of the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. It has pulled thousands of rail passengers through the beautiful state park from the city of Utica to Old Forge (Thendara) on New York Central's former Adirondack branch.
Albert Kallfelz has been involved with historic rail preservation as well as an active member of the National Railway Historical Society for over fifty years. He has lead the Central New York Chapter as president for many of those years including 1998 when the Chapter hosted the NRHS National Convention. Today, the Central New York Chapter owns and maintains two railroad station museums at Martisco and Central Square, NY and a large railroad equipment display at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse NY. The Chapter has a membership of many people of all ages throughout the United States. They maintain a large modular O Gauge railroad layout and hosts the Great New York State Model Train Fair, the second largest show of its type in the northeast for over 45 years. More information about the Central NY Chapter is found at cnynrhs.org

Boldt Castle -Thousand Islands, USA
Boldt Castle is a major landmark and tourist attraction in the Thousand Islands region of the U.S. state of New York.
George Boldt, general manager of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City and manager of the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia, and his family enjoyed an earlier frame cottage on Hart Island (the island's original name) for several summers, which they greatly expanded. In 1900, George Boldt launched an ambitious construction campaign to build a huge masonry structure, one of the largest private homes in the United States. He engaged the architectural firm G. W. & W. D. Hewitt and hundreds of workers for a six-story castle as a present to his wife. In addition, four other masonry structures on the island are architecturally notable. Equally distinctive is a huge yacht house on neighboring Wellesley Island, where the Boldts had another summer home and a vast estate, incorporating farms, canals, a golf course, tennis courts, stables, and a polo field.
The construction of Boldt Castle ceased abruptly in early 1904 after the death of Boldt's wife, Louise Kehrer Boldt. Boldt never returned to Heart Island, leaving this structure as a monument of his love.
The Thousand Islands constitute an archipelago of 1,864 islands that straddles the Canada–US border in the Saint Lawrence River as it emerges from the northeast corner of Lake Ontario. They stretch for about 50 miles (80 km) downstream from Kingston, Ontario. The Canadian islands are in the province of Ontario and the U.S. islands in the state of New York.
The islands range in size from over 40 square miles (100 km2) to smaller islands occupied by a single residence, or uninhabited outcroppings of rocks. To count as one of the Thousand Islands, emergent land within the river channel must have at least one square foot (0.093 m2) of land above water level year-round, and support at least two living trees.
( Wikipedia )
