Swimming with Sharks
This is the most dangerous animal in the world, responsible for millions of deaths every year. Next to it, some sharks swim peacefully.
Sharks are the white blood cells of the ocean & are essential to keeping the ecosystem in harmony. It's incredible interacting with these breathtaking & misunderstood creatures. Adrenaline & bliss & awe. BUT it ain't all peaches & rainbows. 100 million are culled each year in China for shark fin soup, a status symbol dish claimed to have health benefits despite high Mercury levels & cosmetic treatment with hydrogen peroxide...They slice off their fins & throw them back into the ocean to suffer & waste away. All so people can order a toxic soup that makes them feel important...
Sandbar sharks are pretty curious & mellow, and small so as long as you stay above them & maintain eye contact, you're the alpha. The higher you are in the water, the higher your position in their hierarchy. When you look into their eyes, there's someone looking back at you. They aren't completely mindless monster fish, they're actually kinda like puppies haha. They also react differently to each person's unique frequency. Some calm them & others excite them. This was during the tsunami so we're not sure if it affected them. Kind of addicted to learning hands-on about their biology & behavior because there isn't much legit, research-based information out there. Definitely something to try whether you're fascinated or terrified by sharks. Humbling & exhilarating.
