Motorcycle Touring Central Vietnam - Day 1, Hue To Khe Sanh
Can you count how many times I say Wow & Awesome in this video?
In May 2017, I was lucky enough to be able to visit Vietnam and tour by motorcycle with Bikes & Drones, who I had gotten to know through this whole YouTube thing.
After an afternoon of getting used to riding in the craziness that is Vietnamese traffic (see previous 2 uploads), the following day we set off into the hills for the first of two 3 day tours. This first day took us west from Hue into the hills and then north along the Ho Chi Minh Road into more mountainous and truly spectacular countryside. Absolute motorcycling heaven! First stop was the famous Khe Sanh Combat Base from the war.
This is the 3rd video in a series of motorcycling videos where I spent a week riding around the absolutely stunning mountains and seaside areas of Central Vietnam on a Honda XR125, which was made available to me by Bikes & Drones. I cannot thank him enough for the awesome experience.
Then it was back to Ho Chi Minh City for more adventures before flying home.

RIDING VIETNAM'S HO CHI MINH TRAIL! Adventure Oz
We are on day 3 of the top Gear tour with Vietnam Motorbike Tours, 10 days of pure bucket list riding. And today it's the Ho Chi Minh trail, arguably the best riding of the trip with endless corners through epic mountain scenery. It's time to see the real Vietnam! A misty morning in Khe Sanh, we head off to for fuel and to meet the locals. The Vietnamese love their soppy love songs so our guys indulge in a bit of early morning romance.
Helmet on, it's time to see the real Vietnam and the Ho Chi Minh trail! Whether it's a back road or the main highway, we often have to share the road with these guys. These characters usually spectate but sometimes hit the road too with Vietnam Motorbike Tours. In terms of pure riding enjoyment, today promises to be the best riding of the trip on the Ho Chi Minh trai. Even if we are still being stalked by this suspicious character. Vietnam Motorbike Tours is heading for the Western Ho Chi Minh Trail, a concrete-slab road that twists through misty mountains, thick jungle, blue rivers, and isolated ethnic minority hamlets. Countless corners, a grippy surface and barely any other traffic... it's a rider's dream come true. The Ho Chi Minh trail was a complex network of trails and roads built by the north Vietnamese to move men and equipment during the war. The USA later said it was one of the great achievements of military engineering of the 20th century, because the trail was able to effectively supply troops despite the most intense bombing campaign in history, with bombs dropping on average every seven minutes along the trail.
The western Ho Chi Minh trail carved its way through very difficult terrain in one of the most remote areas. It was also the most heavily bombed part of the network.
Originally the Ho Chi Minh trail used existing foot tracks that had existed for centuries. Equipment was lugged on people's backs, heavily loaded bicycles, or oxcarts. But as the war escalated the north Vietnamese rapidly developed road networks and fleets of trucks. Bases provided food, housing, medical care, and guides to the next way-station. In 1965, the Ho Chi Minh trail involved 24,000 men, six truck transportation battalions, two bicycle transportation battalions, a boat transportation battalion, eight engineer battalions, and 45 liaison stations. Everything was concealed by dense forest and also man-made camouflage. The concrete slab highway we are riding on is relatively recent. The western Ho Chi Minh trail is seen as an important part of Vietnam's history so even though this road has very little traffic the government has spent a lot of money on a lasting quality road. And it's all a massive bonus for Vietnam Motorbike Tours. It's a rugged beautiful part of Vietnam and we stop regularly at places like this waterfall to soak it all in. All this cornering is hard work and builds up a big hunger. Time for Lunch.
Occasionally as we ride through villages it looks as though there's money on the road. As a starving Youtube vlogger I'm very tempted to stop and grab handfuls of cash but I don't want to drop behind the group too much. I finally found out at this brief stop when our Vietnam Motorbike Tours guides explained. Talking about our guides, our Vietnam Motorbike Tourssupport crew were incredibly helpful throughout the trip. Cooking lunch, running errands, making sure everyone was happy. And it went beyond supporting us, they would even support transport trucks up steep climbs. Mind you they are cheeky bastards too. Crazy sense of humour, little practical jokes, complete nutters. Mind you we gave as good as we got and Bao would often find someone had pulled his spark plug cap off as payback. Usual suspect? Toby Price no doubt. Let's chat with the ladies and see how the trip is going so far.
So that was the western Ho Chi Minh trail. Later that night we tried to estimate how many corners we did, with guesses between a gazillion and a bazillion. And maybe seven straight bits. And all through some epic mountain scenery. Much of Vietnam has these limestone mountains that have eroded into these very distinctive shapes. It also tends to form caves and we'll be checking out some of the incredible cave systems later with Vietnam Motorbike Tours.

RIDING VIETNAM'S CENTRAL HIGHLANDS Adventure Oz
Road riding Vietnam? I pictured rutted dirt roads with the occasional patchy bit of paved road but this place is a road riding mecca, with stunning ocean views along the coast highway, and endless corners as you wind through the highlands for days on end with Vietnam Motorbike Tours.
And it is a good morning... a great night's sleep in a very comfortable hotel on the coast in Nha Trang. One thing that kept amazing us was the quality of the hotels in each town and how cheap they were. Your dollar definitely goes a long way with Vietnam Motorbike Tours.
Our motley crew saddles up and we head inland. Today's destination? Dalat. A beautiful Vietnam town that is the gateway to the central highlands. The plan is to get us off the beaten track as much as possible, and it happens pretty quickly with the narrowest bridge I have ever ridden across.
The adventure with Vietnam Motorbike Tours could start quickly today. Our guide says there was a major landslide in the mountains overnight and traffic is banked up for miles. But apparently roads get fixed very quickly here and overnight they have already cleared the road and traffic is flowing again.
All the photos and films about Vietnam led me to believe the whole country was flat as a pancake and covered in rice paddies. That tends to be the case along the coastline, but once you head inland the country is dominated by mountain ranges. Along with the change in terrain comes a change in climate too and hot humid conditions of the coast disappear as we climb into the foothills and enjoy cool air along with the views. I'm impressed but the guides say I ain't seen nothing yet.
Everyone loved our Vietnam Motorbike Tours guides. Cheeky, fun, informative. And good cooks too. If there wasn't a decent restaurant stop for lunch we would pull up somewhere in a scenic shady spot and they would cook up a storm. Nice one guys!
Everyone loved the Vietnam Motorbike Tours bikes too. There are tough size restrictions in Vietnam but we all agreed you would probably get into trouble fast with too much power on these roads.
Vietnam has come a long way since being ravaged by the Vietnam War... or the American was as it's known here. As we get further into the mountains the roads are still paved and in great condition. And even when we get into remote areas later on the roads are still fine. I asked the tour guys if they had thought about getting adventure bikes but it seems the government has done such a good job of paving all the roads that there's no point. I asked about Vietnam dirt riding and they said there is a bit of dirt riding in the far north but most of it is either illegal or riding in questionable areas so they have stuck with the road riding. And I can see why with Vietnam Motorbike Tours. Even though I'm a dirt rider at heart this is a rider's paradise.
Dalat, gateway to the Vietnam highlands. Beautiful temples, crisp mountain air, and a curious blend of Vietnamese culture and its French colonial past. The French colonialists made this their retreat from the hot coastal areas, the Americans did the same thing during the war.
The Vietnam temples are inspiring, but before we get too spiritual we remember there's a pile of cold beer waiting for us at the hotel so it's helmets on a final time. Tonight we get a real slice of French colonial history... one of the old style hotels and its old world charm. Now where's that beer?
Upper crust adventure at its best, Vietnam Motorbike Tours.

RIDING VIETNAM'S SCENIC NORTH WEST MOUNTAINS Adventure Oz
Day 8 on the Top Gear Tour with Vietnam Motorbike Tours! Epic riding in the remote north west of Vietnam, and its corners, climbs, corners, descents and more corners as we explore the Moc Chau plateau. It's pure bucket list riding and the best way to see the real Vietnam. There are thousands of beautiful valleys across Vietnam and we stayed in one of them last night. But no rest for the wicked, it's time to endure the daily commute as our slave driver issues the order. And what a way to commute. Mist covered mountains, terraced rice fields, cool mountain air. Tough life for Vietnam Motorbike Tours, but someone has to do it. This is the perfect way to see the real Vietnam.
Alrighty then, day eight. What's on the agenda? According to our itinerary, we leave the green embrace of Mai Chau valley in the morning. With the mists rising off the paddy fields, we hit the road and head higher into the northwest mountains. Check. What else? As we arrive on the Moc Chau plateau the trees fade away to reveal acres of tea plantations. This area is famous for its excellent brew. Okay, well I coffee but I don't mind riding past tea plantations. What else? The temperatures drop as we ride higher. The landscape becomes barren and bare, making it appear isolated and remote. Indeed, this part of Vietnam was a special semi-autonomous zone until the late 20th century. It's certainly a day of elevation changes with Vietnam Motorbike Tours and I suspect we are riding up and down this plateau throughout the day. Exceptional views, picturesque valleys. Loving it. And now yet another word from our culturally inappropriate sponsor. Lets see if the guys are happy with the trip so far or plotting a class action lawsuit.
Plenty of water in Vietnam. And there are plenty of dams too, many of these generate hydroelectricity and around 70% of Vietnam's electricity is generated that way. And somewhere around here is the biggest hydoelectric scheme in Indochina. We are riding in the dry season with Vietnam Motorbike Tours but it still rains occasionally. Over the 10 day trip we just got some light rain for one morning. Apparently they guys get asked a lot about when is the best time to ride Vietnam, and it actually doesn't matter that much. Weather patterns vary a lot from north to south, and the guys based themselves kind of in the middle at Nha Trang because it offers the best year round riding. And they vary the destinations to suit. For example the monsoonal storms up north mean tours like ours that finish in Hanoi are only run for a few months of the year. Corners, corners and more corners. I figure we are climbing the plateau again and it's hard to keep your eyes on the road with views like this. Another awesome day with Vietnam Motorbike Tours and we pull into another classy hotel in Son La, a highland town with a real buzz. Stick around for more adventures in the real vietnam.

Riding from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi
This video is a compilation of the footage I was able to get during our ride from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi in northern Vietnam. It is really hard to explain the beauty of this country. It is something that you have to see in person.
The total trip was 25 days and we wasted no time getting a bike once we landed in Ho Chi Minh for the trip. Jess has never been on the back of a bike before and after a few rides with a loaned scooter she was feeling semi-comfortable around the hectic traffic. We switched the scooter out for a Honda XR150 and loaded up the bike. With 2 backpacks and 2 smaller bags, we fueled up and set off.
We were not ready for the ever changing landscapes. We stopped frequently to take in the views. The route that we took recommended by Tigit was covered in nice turns sloping down the mountainside. I’m a bit shocked that there wasn’t much of a motorbike/car racing scene here considering the roads the locals ride on everyday would breed some talented drivers/riders.
We spent a night or two in most of the cities but focused most of our time in Ho Chi Minh and Hue where my family lives. Thank you Vietnam for an amazing time, we will be back :)
