The stunningly Shwedagon Pagoda and sincerely Burmese pilgrims were really touched on my heart; also noticed Burmese people especially in tourist attraction areas were very attentive to their tourist guests.

Foreigners in MYANMAR - Hot, CHAOTIC Adventure in YANGON
This was a hot, chaotic, and FUN day! We took a ride on the old and rough Yangon circular train around the outskirts and more rural areas of Yangon, Myanmar. From the central station in downtown Yangon, we were able to board the train for 200 Kyat ($0.13 USD) and ride among Burmese commuters for the afternoon and evening. This was such an interesting way to get a glimpse of local life, and we had lots of fun interactions throughout the journey!

Exploring Yangon: Our first day in Myanmar
When we got to Yangon Myanmar we didn't know what to expect. Myanmar started allowing visitors in 2011 after 50 years of military regime so this country is one of the last places in the world that is still untouched by mass tourism.
In this video you can see the amazing Shwedagon Pagoda or the Golden Pagoda, Sule Pagoda, Maha Wizaya Pagoda.

Day 65, fellow adventurers!
We are now in Yangon (formerly Rangoon), Myanmar, one of our family's favorite destinations in the world.
We got here at night and so our first stop is to go see the amazing Shwedagon Pagoda that is in Yangon and it's about an hour or so drive for us to get there and it is going to be lit up at night.
The traffic in Yangon is very, very congested.
Recently, so many people have started to come to this country and they have not been able to keep up with the infrastructure.
So it took us almost an hour and a half to get to Shwedagon. But once we got there, it was a site for all to see.
Shwedagon is 98 meters tall and they have put 23 tons of gold on this pagoda over the years.
In fact, every five years they remodel, if you will, and continuous maintenance is being done on this pagoda.
During the day there are individuals that go up in the pagoda and they put gold leaf on it because there's areas where it has worn down or weather or some other thing has caused the gold to peel down and it requires maintenance.
Our guide let us know that Buddhism is NOT a religion.
In fact, he calls it a philosophy and way of life. It emphasizes that you should be focusing on the here and now and that we should forsake our cravings for instant pleasures and that by simply meditating, we can achieve great knowledge.
Our guide told us that when families get together for breakfast, lunch and dinner, they do not talk to one another.
They meditate and eat their food.
Can you imagine that with your family?
Well anyhow, the people are very happy-go-lucky and very peaceful and you can tell that they meditate and that it has made a big impact on them with their mood and soul when you're with them.
So, Shwedagon itself is this huge pagoda and there is all of these little temples all the way around and you have to walk around the temple clockwise.
Around the temple, there's each day of the week and they look at the day of the week where you were born and they have an altar.
At that altar, there is water and that you need to pour water on these different deities.
They also brought a lot of food offerings as well as many flowers.
For example, I was born on a Friday, so there is a Guinea pig that is the Friday person's animal and so you put water over the Guinea pig and all over the Buddhists that are sitting in these altars.
Throughout all of Shwedagon, I would say there's a hundred different temples and altars and it took us about an hour just to walk around it and lightly look at it - but it is one of these amazing sites.
Once you see Shwedagon, it's downhill on pagodas from there because Shwedagon is so exceptional and it's size and beauty with all of the different pagodas and different altars and different temples throughout the area.
You just can't help but people watch as well.
There are all kinds of monks and they are dressed in a maroon colored outfit.
Then there are nuns that are dressed in pink and many people are chanting and reading prayers and worshiping in the altars and in different temples.
They are bringing offerings and flowers and food as well as their prayers.
It's just one of those moments that you just have to take in and frankly you can't get it all while you're there because so much is going on.
So much stimulation and things to look at colors and people and all of the temples.
Everything’s just so much stimulation…it’s hard to take it all in at once. There is such an auspicious feeling in the air when you're there and it's just a sense of awe.
Prior to getting into the temple, you have to take your shoes off so everyone walking around does not have any shoes on and your feet get really dirty.

In closing, my wish for you is that you will love abundantly, protect your health, and be adventurous for life. You are beautiful. Let your light shine, Aloha!

Day one in Yangon | The BEST welcome to Myanmar
Today is our first day in Myanmar and we are so excited for our time in our 3rd country to begin!
After flying from Singapore to Yangon the night before, we get out early to explore the city of Yangon. Our plan is to start with a 15 minute walk from our hostel to the Sule Pagoda but 15 minutes quickly turns into an hour as we keep turning off onto side streets where they are having morning markets. There is so much to see and take in and we love getting lost in the side streets and getting a glimpse into local life.
We then make it to the Sule Pagoda which is a small Pagoda in the center of town all the main streets seem to lead toward.
From the Sula Pagoda we head to the Bogyoke Aung San Market for lunch. We pick a stall where a lot of local people are eating. While we get off to a bit of an awkward start as the menu is in Burmese and the owners of the food stall do not speak any English (and of course we do not speak Burmese), this quickly becomes one of our favorite meals of all time.
This is all thanks to the man sitting next to us who jumps in and orders a few dishes for us (I will add he also does not speak any English). Once the food comes, he sends something back to get some sauce added... he takes my chopsticks and stirs one of our other dishes because we clearly are struggling. We exchange no words that either of us can understand but we still share many, many laughs together. The food was all DELICIOUS! We still don't know what we ate... and everything was under $2 USD!
It was such an incredible, authentic and unexpected experience and it has us LOVING Myanmar from day 1.
From the market we head back to our hostel to relax a bit and then go to the Shwedagon Pagoda at sunset. This pagoda is Yangon’s most famous landmark. It is a gold plated pagoda that measures nearly 100 meters high and is over 2,500 years old. The pagoda alone is incredibly impressive but as the sun sets, the monks begin to light the candles surrounding the pagoda, the bells are chiming, people are praying and it is such a peaceful and magical setting.
We finish up at a couple different night markets and then call it a night after an AMAZING first day and introduction into Myanmar. We are now even more excited for what is in store in this country!

Yangon in Myanmar (Burma): Shwedagon Pagoda, Kandawgyi Lake & park, street markets and Myanmar food
One day in Yangon Myanmar is just enough to visit the amazing Shwedagon Pagoda and its many surrounding temples which is a must see for anyone visiting Yangon. At night the Shwedagon Pagoda is lit up.
Before visiting the Shwedagon Pagoda (not to be confused with Shwegadon which is the name of a place close to Mandalay further south in Burma) I spent the morning wandering around a typical Myanmar street market watching the poeple of Myanmar go about their daily lives and looking at all the amazing fresh fruit, veg and fish for sale. It's thirsty work so I head to the Kandawgyi Lake & Park which is a beautiful lush green area in the middle of Yangon with lots of cafes and restuarants, in the area of the Karaweik which is a replica of a clasically styled Royal Barge.
Across the lake you can see the Shwedagon Pagoda, and so after an amazing strawberry smoothie I make my way to the Pagoda for the highlight of my first day in Yangon Myanmar.
Lunch today was at the Love Boat, which I chose at random in one of the malls, and it was absolutely delicious!
