Alaskan Adventure - Trip to Juneau, Feb. 2018
Trip to Juneau, AK from Indianapolis, IN. My dad, a friend from Wyoming and I visit several cool and scenic places, including Mendenhall Glacier, Last Chance Basin, Perseverance Trail, Snowslide Gulch, the former largest mining site in the world, Ebner Falls, Alaska State Museum, Flume Trail, and the town of Juneau itself. Very fun trip!

Juneau is a unified municipality located on the Gastineau Channel in the panhandle of Alaska. It has been the capital of Alaska since 1906, when the government of the then-Alaska Territory was moved from Sitka. Downtown Juneau is nestled at the base of Mount Juneau and across the channel from Douglas Island. As of the 2000 census, the City had a population of 30,711. Downtown Juneau sits at sea level below steep mountains about 3,500 to 4,000 feet high. Atop these mountains is the Juneau Icefield, a large ice mass from which about 30 glaciers flow; two of these, the Mendenhall Glacier and the Lemon Creek Glacier, are visible from the local road system.
This video begins as we sail into Juneau's harbor on the Sapphire Princess. After disembarking the ship I take the tramway to the top of Mount Roberts for fantastic views of the Gastineau Channel and the city of Juneau. Next I journey out to Mendenhall Glacier before returning to the city and sailing away.

Mendenhall Glacier Juneau,Alaska
Mendenhall Glacier is a glacier about 12 miles (19 km) long located in Mendenhall Valley, about 12 miles (19 km) from downtown Juneau in the southeast area of the U.S. state of Alaska. The glacier and surrounding landscape is protected as the 5,815-acre Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, a federally-designated unit of the Tongass National Forest.
Juneau Alaska Tour Of City And Mount Roberts Tramway In Wet Weather Juneau Alaska
Juneau Alaska is the State's landlocked capital city. Weather In Juneau is humid and wet with rain falling an average of 230 days per year and an annual rainfall of 62.5 inches per year and snowfall of 86+ inches per year. Tours in Juneau that attract the most attention from tourists are Mendenhall Glacier, Tracy Arm Fjord, and local fishing and whale watching excursions. If you're visiting by cruise ship and are looking for really easy and simple tours in Juneau hop on the Mount Roberts Tram and tour the easy trails at the top or take a tour of Juneau on a local tour bus.
Juneau weather is very predictable. It's likely to rain during your visit but you can still enjoy the magnificent views from the top of the Mount Roberts tram provided it isn't too foggy.
Be sure to bring a compact umbrella and wear a rain resistant overcoat or windbreaker and you can still enjoy Juneau rain or shine.

Begin with a scenic tour up the Mendenhall Valley. On the shores of Mendenhall Lake, don protective raingear and life jackets, and board your raft. Each holds up to twelve, and is rowed by an experienced guide. Or, if you're looking for a hands-on experience, join a paddle-raft team.
Glide across the iceberg-studded lake, marveling at the 1.5-mile-wide glacier, and set course downstream. The six-mile route combines meandering stretches with Class II and III whitewater. The rapids are perfectly safe, just exciting enough for beginners, and appropriate for all ages. A treat for experienced rafters, too! Encounter river features such as Moon Flats and Pin Ball Alley. Watch for the photographer on shore who snaps your picture, capturing the thrill of your adventure.
Where the river levels out, soak in the views of the riverbank, lush forests, and 7,000-foot mountains above the valley floor. Learn about the natural history of the river. You're likely to see bald eagles, birds nesting in rocky cliffs, black bears, otters and seals, and salmon during spawning season.
At the haul-out, celebrate with an Alaskan-style snack and toast your adventure with a cup of Martha's Mendenhall Madness. You can also purchase an action photo of yourself as a lasting memento of a trip you'll never forget.

Glacier Bay was completely covered by ice and glaciers around four thousand years ago during the Little Ice Age. The ice melted and the ever-changing glaciers are today situated within the arms of the bay which stretches almost a hundred kilometres to the north. Barrow is the northernmost point of inhabited North America and five hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. The living conditions in the arctic wastelands are extremely harsh and most of the year it is bone-chillingly cold. Even today the promise of untamed nature and boundless freedom attracts us to America’s final wilderness. Alaska is full of wild extremes and stark contrasts, a fascinating land of pure adventure!
