KONA We were up early. The room service breakfast did not arrive. When we called at around 0650 the covering butler sounds like he forgot. He said he'll deliver it in 15 minutes. We told him to forget it. I was really upset about this. We grabbed a bite at Aloha and took some food for lunch later then went straight to the tender. They did not even check our tender ticket. The tender left around 0730. The Thrifty desk at King Kamehameha Hotel was closed and did not open until 0800. We were the first to arrive and the line got so long quickly. When we went to get our car rental we couldn't find it. It turned out to be at another lot. It was not marked properly on their inventory. We left the hotel around 0830. We arrived at South Point one hour and 20 minutes later then drove another 11 miles on South Point Rd to the boat ramp. This road was paved but narrow and further down it turns to one lane. It hasn't been maintained. The ride was bumpy. It's a good thing we drove a Durango. There was a small car that stopped on the side. Maybe the driver was contemplating whether to go through with it. As we continue heading south, we passed a wind farm and the road forks. We took the road towards the left. Fortunately, the lady in the parking gate in the hotel told us to go left. Otherwise we could have followed the jeep in front of us, made a wrong turn and come back. It would have been a waste of time. We drove until we reached the gate. We stopped and asked a local who was at the boat ramp if we were on the right track towards Green Sand Beach. He said yes and he said we can drive all the way to the beach. We tried to drive passed the gate but the sharp, jagged rocks made it feels like the tire will blow up anytime. I was so scared and made DH turned back. I told him we're violating our car rental agreement. We just parked across the boat ramp next to the small tree where there's a picnic table underneath. We hiked for about an hour and there were misleading trails along the way. You really have to do an extensive research if you plan to visit this place. You can easily get lost. I know what the beach looks like from the pictures that I saw. When I saw the rock wall from afar I knew where we were headed. There were a few people who drove their jeep to the beach. We also saw a mom driving a ford explorer with her little girls. (And I can tell DH was already thinking that he could have done it too). When we finally reached the beach, I was liked, This is it!. The green sand beach was so pretty. It's not really green. It's more like an olive color. To go to the beach you have to go down and going down was challenging. I let DH, DS and DD1 climbed down to the beach. I decided to wait at the top with DD2 who is 7yo. DD2 keeps urging me that we go down and she wants to swim in the beach too. I saw people going to the top front of the beach and climbed down from there easily. So I negotiated with her. If she walk, we go down. I told her I'm not carrying her. She agreed. I called DH and motioned to him that we're going down through the top, fronting the beach. So we walked. DH met us there and assisted DD2 down. I found this trail to be easier. While facing down the beach go towards the right where there were natural footholds and climb down from there. The kids had so much fun body surfing here. There were a lot of people swimming and a few people climbing the left side of the rock wall. We stayed for about an hour and started hiking back. It was hot and windy. The wind cooled us a bit. Definitely use sunscreen. You can easily bake in the sun. Bring lots of water and wear good hiking shoes. DH and ...

Manta Ray snorkeling aboard the Kona Style catamaran in Kailua-Kona Hawaii Big Island
#mantarays #snorkeling #bigisland We took a snorkeling cruise aboard the Kona Style catamaran in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. The crew was very nice and professional. The boat was very nice. It appeared new and clean. The manta rays are attracted to the plankton, which are attracted to the lights, so all the cruises have snorkelers hang onto surfboards with handles affixed, and use pool noodles to support their feet and keep them level with the water. The manta rays were super cool! And as they feed at night, the only way to see or experience them is to book a tour like this.

We visited the Hulihe'e Palace in historic Kailua-Kona, on the big island of Hawai'i. Once a summer vacation home for Hawaiian royalty, today it is a museum showcasing Victorian artifacts from the era of King Kalākaua and Queen Kapi'olani.

Another Day in Paradise... Kona, Hawaii - 2015
Here's another day in Paradise, and we still have a week left of vacation - a much needed vacation. Basically a post card video of a day touring around the greater west coast of the Big Island.
Mahalo
White Sands Beach Park (Kailua-Kona Hawaii)
The Underwater Caves of Kona, Hawaii
This is a short teaser of freediving through underwater caves and lava tubes on the Big Island of Hawaii with a couple friends. Shot on Gopro Hero 3.
Ep 4: Five days in Big Island, Hawaii
We visited The Island of Hawaii popularly known as The Big Island and rightly so! It takes 6 hours to drive around the island even if you don’t stop for a beautiful vista point overlooking the Pacific or a magnificent lava fields. Here is our detailed iternerary for our lovely trip to the Big Island.
Day 1: Went for snorkel @Mauna Kea Beach Be sure to read this very nice written article before:
Day 2: Hawaii Volcanos National Park. It is a huge park and it will take an entire day for you to cover.
Day 3: Pu`uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park followed by another snorkel at Kahalu’u Beach (
Day 4: Waipo valley lookout:
Akaka Falls State Park: Try to park your car outside of the designated parking area. They charge 8$ if you park within the designated parking for the falls. There are two ways of reaching the Akaka Falls, we chose the longest route which was a short 45 minutes walk to the falls and back but it was totally worth it as it went through a tropical jungle.
Kaumana Caves
Flea Market at Kaiua Kona
Sunset at Mauna Kea Visitor Center- We did not have a 4X4 vehicle and hence we did not go all the way up to the Mauna Kea Summit. Instead we went to Sunset Hill to watch the sunset.
Our stay:
Where to stay:
Kona - Surfers paradise. The sunny part of the island and also the more happening.
Hilo - Very green and non urban. It was very beautiful and gave us Kaua’i like feels when we went there. Most of the locals stay this side of the island.
Waikoloa - This is more like a small hotel township. There is Mariott, Hilton and some other condos in the village. Many shopping complexes such as Kings Shops and Queen shops are also inside. The advantage of staying here was that we had plenty of food options few feet away from us. This was 30mins north of Kona.
Things not to be missed:
Hawaii volcanoes national park : This park is another experience. Just witnessing the landscape changing right in front of your eyes is truly a different experience and it should not be missed if you visit Big Island
Restaurants we visited during our stay:
Sweet Cane Cafe:
Under The Bodhi tree -
Waimea coffee company -
Kamana Kitchen -
Swami's Dosa Grill -
Herbivores -
The Evans Estate- on historic Keauhou Bay, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
Before you enter the grounds of the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa, you barely see on your right a rock wall and wood gate. When you enter the sliding gate, you discover what seems like a secret sanctuary. A vast property on the ocean with three houses at a distance. You are living your adventure in what feels like old Hawaii. The romance of Hawaii is captured in the sounds of the birds, the colors and smells of the vegetation, the ocean breezes, the view of the Bay and Pacific Ocean at a distance, the sun setting over the blue waters. Relax under a mango tree or even better on the large lawn next to your private swimming cove. Maybe you will never leave this paradise found during your stay.
There are three renovated houses covering only 15% of the estate compound. Although they all have modern amenities, the design and materials are reminiscent of old hawaii. It is no wonder the estate has been in the same family for over 70 years and that Keauhou Bay was the choice place to reside of the Hawaiian royalty. King Kamemeha III, the lastKing, was born at this Bay.
The three houses accommodate up to 16 guests. click dimensions. The versatile grounds are perfect for intimate gatherings up to large formal weddings with dinner and dancing for over 150 guests.
