Obadiah's Wildfire Base Camp, Missoula Montana
Every year when the snow melts and the flowers blossom in Montana, we prepare for something that sticks horror in many folks minds, Wildland Wildfires. Fire is apart of life, we use it to lead civilized lives, nature uses it to clean house, how we respond to those differences, can make all the difference in the world.
Our fearless leader, Woody Chain chose this spot to set up base camp for several reasons, this location gives us a finger on the pulse of Wildfire activity in the Lolo National Forest where we are on Initial Attack and need to be able to respond swiftly. Working closely with the USFS Region One Dispatch Center, we assist Federal State and Local Firefighters to keep Wildland Wildfire risk mitigated. We don't always put wildfires out, we provide what the USFS calls Point Protection which means sometimes we just try to steer the wildfire around inhabited areas. How wise this is, will be a history lesson someday.
Nearby you will find the heartbeat of Wildfires in the Region One of the US Wildfire Map. If you are into Wildland Firefighting, there is no place else on earth that sees as much activity. This is the home of the world famous Smoke Jumpers and the place where it all started. The Aerial Fire Depot and Smokejumper Center is a hopping place, There is a training base here and you can watch them practice on the adjoining mountains, jumping out of planes gaining the skills that make them the Hero's we all love and respect, sort of the Seals of Fire.
You will also find a Smokejumper, Wildland Firefighter, USFS Lookout Tower, and a 1910 Wildfire Museum. Here you will also find the USFS Wildfire Suppression Lab that studies Wildland Wildfires and helps protect us and you. and this site, If all that was not enough excitement for one day, here you will also find the USFS Slurry Bomber Base where all the activity is easily viewed as they fly over our heads taking off and landing. When things are heating up, we know pretty quickly. Being a bunch of firefighters, we love this spot, its like a Disneyland for Wild Firefighters.
If your into a bunch of crazy folks who see fire and start running for it, (towards, not away), you have found your heaven on earth, for more info on these strange folks with a fixation for fire, see Woody Chain's website,
