Why European Tourists Are Visiting South African Slums (HBO)
Cape Town is the premier tourist destination in South Africa. Wine tours, beaches, and scenic hiking are all within easy driving distance.
But if none of that sounds appealing, you can take a guided tour of a slum.
Mzu Lembeni runs one of the many tour companies that takes tourists into Cape Town’s townships, impoverished areas that were first created when the Apartheid government forced nonwhites to live in segregated areas.
On his tour, tourists can walk right into people’s homes, drink homemade liquor, play with children at a local school, and take as many pictures as they like.
For some people, this sounds like exploitation. But Lembeni, who grew up in a township himself, disagrees.
“If there was no poverty ... I'll do the township tour, because [of] the culture,” Lembeni says. “I don't sell the poverty, I sell the culture.”
Most of Lembeni’s clients are white Europeans, who have come to see the “real” South Africa. Mzu says his tours are the best way to do that.
In a country where more than half of the population lives below the poverty line, and where the shadow of apartheid still looms over daily life, a township is a pretty good primer on what “real” looks like for a lot of people.
But not everyone who lives in the townships likes the tourists who are constantly wandering their streets.
VICE News joined a group of Europeans on vacation to see how local residents feel about being part of the holiday scenery.

Cape Town is a port city on South Africa’s southwest coast, on a peninsula beneath the imposing Table Mountain. Slowly rotating cable cars climb to the mountain’s flat top, from which there are sweeping views of the city, the busy harbor and boats heading for Robben Island, the notorious prison that once held Nelson Mandela, which is now a living museum.

Cape Malay Food - Eating South African Cuisine at Biesmiellah in Bo-Kaap, Cape Town, South Africa Travel Food Transcript:
Alright guys, so it is lunchtime here in Cape Town and today we are in Bo Kaap (Malay Quarter) the colorful neighborhood. We're going to be having some Cape Malay food which is very exciting because this is very multicultural food in a way that is very unique to the Cape here in South Africa.
Visiting the colorful neighborhood of Bo-Kaap is your best bet to try Cape Malay cuisine This is a fusion between Malaysian, Indonesian and South African culinary traditions characterized by flavorful and aromatic ingredients.
So we're eating here at Biesmiellah restaurant (The Lounge) and we have our friend Trudy who is a local of Stellenbosch to thank for this. Because otherwise we probably wouldn't have found out about this place. And this place is apparently a bit of an institution here in Bo-Kaap.
Yeah, yeah and so we've like ordered a lot. Haha. A lot of food. We've got appetizers, we've got mains, we've got drinks and we've got desserts coming and it is all quite affordable so we can't wait for all of the food to come and we're just going to have another feast of feasts here in Cape Town, South Africa.
Alright, so all the food is here and it smells and it looks amazing. But we're going to be trying something new. We're having something called bobotie. At least I think that is how you say it and I'm going to read you the description because this sounds tantalizing.
A sweet sour flavored lean beef mince, stir-fried with fresh herbs, spices topped with a milked egg glaze served with sweet yellow rice. You can see that milk egg.
So we've been in South Africa for two weeks now and this is my first time trying this. Even though we've had Cape Malay food once before. Yeah, this is definitely our first time and we also didn't have it on the first trip either so this is really special. One of our last meals.
Time for dish number two. So the next one that we got is a mutton curry and it says skewers of mutton cooked gently and slowly with a blend of traditional spices and herbs to produce a tantalizing curry. Check that out.
Time for dessert and we are having puddings. Pudding.
So we have sago pudding which apparently is typical type of Indian inspired pudding. Yeah. And then we have over here Malva pudding which is sort of more traditional South African.
So this one is called a Koeksister or a Koeksisters.
Okay, and it is a fried doughnut.
ime for price point. So that was 340 Rand which at current exchange is about $25 US dollars. So we did get ended up being three drinks, we got an appetizer, two mains and three desserts. So we kind of, we kind of went overboard a little bit but uh yeah still good definitely good value for money spent and one thing that we've really enjoyed about Cape Town is that it is very much a foodie city.
This is part of our Travel in South Africa video series showcasing South African food, South African culture and South African cuisine.

South Africa Vlog: Shopping in Johannesburg
December 21, 2012
We spent the afternoon at Sandton City, a huge shopping complex that is adjacent to Nelson Mandela Square. In the Square, you can also find the Sandton Public Library, which is very nice.
If you have a long layover or, like us, are stuck at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you can easily go into the city by taking the Gautrain, a commuter train. Most of the stops are in residential areas, but if you want to do a bit of shopping, see a movie, etc., take the Gautrain from OR Tambo to Sandton City. You'll have to buy a Gold Card, which costs a one-time fee of 11 Rand, then add value to the card. A one-way trip from OR Tambo to Sandton City costs 115 Rand per person, which is pricey but still cheaper than taking a taxi.
If you're staying at the Garden Court Hotel, which provides a free shuttle bus service to and from OR Tambo Airport, take the Gautrain back to Rhodesfield Station, which is one stop before the airport. This will cost you just 27 Rand (compared to 115!)! The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from Rhodesfield Station. We strongly suggest that you take this option during daylight hours. If your shopping trip extends into the night, then we recommend that you pay the extra money to take the Gautrain to the airport then ride the free shuttle bus to the hotel, which is the safest option.
Africa - A drive through one of South Africas most dangerous neighborhoods. Diepsloot Johannesburg
I met up with my friend Pilate, who showed me around the south african township of Diepsloot. One of South Africas most dangerous neighborhoods. The township of Diepsloot is just north of Johannesburg and a very interesting place to visit and not nearly as bad as it´s reputation. You can see people going about their daily business. and dogs playing and fighting in the street. Pilate showed me his home and it was a very humbling experience.
Diepsloot is a densely populated settlement in the north of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is made up of government-subsidised housing, brick houses built by landowners as well as shacks. These shacks are built on any piece of land with nothing already on it. Some landowners charge rent to others to stay in a shack on their land.

South African Airways flight from South Africa to Germany travel vlog (Cape Town - Joburg - Munich) video transcript:
Well today is a travel day. What happened to our time in South Africa? Like it flew by.
Seriously. We've been here for 2 weeks and I still can't believe it. I feel like literally like we just got here.
Anyways, so we have a really long journey ahead of us. We are basically going to be traveling for a day and a half. Or two. Well first we're catching a taxi to the airport in Cape Town and then it it what a two hour flight to Joburg. A flight to Joburg. And then from Joburg we have an eleven hour flight to Munich in Germany and then we're going to arrive there and then we're going to have time to kill because we're going to be arriving early in the morning and we can't even check-in to our AirBNB until like mid-afternoon.
Then we're going to have to take a bus or a train to Nuremberg where we've rented an AirBNB. No, no no and then from the center of town we have to take another train because we're staying in the outskirts. Right so buckle up because we're going to show you the whole thing.
Two cups of Rooibos and a glass of Pinotage for Sam. The pinotage hasn't arrived yet but we are basically we're trying to get some of our favorite local things before we leave because we probably won't be able to have rooibos tea again for a while.
So our 1st of 2 flights with South African Airways. All aboard. All aboard. So Joburg and then we don't have that long of a wait and then yeah. Thankfully this is a short flight. The next one is going to be longer.
Wine o'clock. Even on the plane. Even on a short flight like this. That is so nice of them to give us wine. I know. The flight is less than 2 hours. Only an hour and forty minutes. And we're getting a meal too.
Dinner has been served.
Um, we are having stir-fried beef and it comes with salad. Salad and a piece of chocolate cake..
Alright, bit of a crazy update. We're not sure if we're going to make our flight.
We made it. They are holding the flight. You know what? W wouldn't have made it had it not been for these two really nice girls I think from the States who let us like jump two lines in the queue. Oh my gosh. Yes. Because we still had like 2 long zigzags to get through.
Update. We are greasy, we are sweaty. Feeling dirty and sleep deprived. Now we have to go find the S-Bahn. One step closer to getting to Nuremberg. Let's do it. Yes, get to the train station in Munich and then find the bus to Nuremberg.
So we made it to the bus terminal. We have our tickets for Nuremberg and now it is time for lunch. It is almost noon. So we hit up a German bakery and we got two savory things and a sweet thing.
We made it. I think it has been exactly 24 hours door to door because we left our AirBNB in Cape Town at like 2 in the afternoon and I think it is past 2 in the afternoon at this point.
So long day of travel. We arrived at our AirBNB which is pretty cute. Maybe we'll do a tour another day. But yes, it is time to sign off, get some rest. Say goodbye! Bye!

Zambia/Africa:
Zambia, officially the Republic of Zambia, is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. The neighbouring countries are the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Tanzania to the north-east, Malawi to the east, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia to the south, and Angola to the west. The capital city is Lusaka, located in the south-central part of the country. The population is concentrated mainly around Lusaka in the south and the Copperbelt Province to the northwest.
Originally inhabited by Khoisan peoples, the region which comprises modern Zambia was colonised during the Bantu expansion of the thirteenth century. After visits by European explorers in the eighteenth century, Zambia became the British colony of Northern Rhodesia towards the end of the nineteenth century. For most of the colonial period, the country was governed by an administration appointed from London with the advice of the British South Africa Company.
Zambia is a landlocked country in southern Africa, with a tropical climate and consists mostly of high plateau, with some hills and mountains, dissected by river valleys. At 752,614 km2 (290,586 sq mi) it is the 39th-largest country in the world (after Chile) and slightly larger than the US state of Texas. The country lies mostly between latitudes 8° and 18°S, and longitudes 22° and 34°E.
Zambia is drained by two major river basins: the Zambezi/Kafue basin in the centre, west and south covering about three-quarters of the country; and the Congo basin in the north covering about one-quarter of the country. A very small area in the northeast forms part of the internal drainage basin of Lake Rukwa in Tanzania.
In the Zambezi basin, there are a number of major rivers flowing wholly or partially through Zambia: the Kabompo, Lungwebungu, Kafue, Luangwa, and the Zambezi itself, which flows through the country in the west and then forms its southern border with Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. Its source is in Zambia but it diverts into Angola, and a number of its tributaries rise in Angola's central highlands. The edge of the Cuando River floodplain (not its main channel) forms Zambia's southwestern border, and via the Chobe River that river contributes very little water to the Zambezi because most is lost by evaporation.
Two of the Zambezi's longest and largest tributaries, the Kafue and the Luangwa, flow mainly in Zambia. Their confluences with the Zambezi are on the border with Zimbabwe at Chirundu and Luangwa town respectively. Before its confluence, the Luangwa River forms part of Zambia's border with Mozambique. From Luangwa town, the Zambezi leaves Zambia and flows into Mozambique, and eventually into the Mozambique Channel.
The Zambezi falls about 100 metres (328 ft) over the 1.6 km (0.99 mi) wide Victoria Falls, located in the south-west corner of the country, subsequently flowing into Lake Kariba. The Zambezi valley, running along the southern border, is both deep and wide. From Lake Kariba going east it is formed by grabens and like the Luangwa, Mweru-Luapula, Mweru-wa-Ntipa and Lake Tanganyika valleys, is a rift valley.Eastern Zambia shows great diversity. The Luangwa Valley splits the plateau in a curve north east to south west, extended west into the heart of the plateau by the deep valley of the Lunsemfwa River. Hills and mountains are found by the side of some sections of the valley, notably in its north-east the Nyika Plateau (2,200 m/7,218 ft) on the Malawi border, which extend into Zambia as the Mafinga Hills, containing the country's highest point, Kongera (2,187 m/7,175 ft). The Muchinga Mountains, the watershed between the Zambezi and Congo drainage basins, run parallel to the deep valley of the Luangwa River and form a sharp backdrop to its northern edge, although they are almost everywhere below 1,700 m (5,577 ft). Their culminating peak Mumpu is at the western end and at 1,892 m (6,207 ft) is the highest point in Zambia away from the eastern border region. The border of the Congo Pedicle was drawn around this mountain.
The southernmost headstream of the Congo River rises in Zambia and flows west through its northern area firstly as the Chambeshi and then, after the Bangweulu Swamps as the Luapula, which forms part of the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Luapula flows south then west before it turns north until it enters Lake Mweru. The lake's other major tributary is the Kalungwishi River, which flows into it from the east. The Luvua River drains Lake Mweru, flowing out of the northern end to the Lualaba River (Upper Congo River).Wikipedia
