Six-storey building collapses in a suburb in Uganda's capital Kampala
At least one body has been recovered after a building collapsed in a suburb of Kampala in Uganda. Seven people have so far been taken alive from the rubble, and rescue operations continue. It's not clear at this stage what caused the collapse. The building was under construction. Rescue services have been struggling with a crowd of people gathered at the scene. They've been urging them to move back so they can do their work. The building is close to Kampala's main university.

The people who do these ritual killings are looking for money. That is what makes them kill. I have never sacrificed humans. When we want to talk with the spirits I cook for them food, I call our clan elder, I bring them alcohol, I play the drums, the spirits then get into people''s heads and they advise them.

Some people have been deceived that if they sacrifice children they will get wealth. But this doesn''t work. In the years I have spent visiting these traditional doctors, I have not come across this but I believe one who sacrifices children is not doing the right thing.

The practice of human sacrifice is on the rise in Uganda, as measured by ritual killings where body parts, often facial features or genitals, are cut off for use in ceremonies.
The number of people killed in ritual murders last year rose to a new high of at least 15 children and 14 adults, up from just three cases in 2007, according to police.
The informal count is much higher _ 154 suspects were arrested last year and 50 taken to court over ritual killings.
Children in particular are common victims, according to a U.S. State Department report released this month.

'My name is Becky and I’m a single mother of a son called Louis.
I longed to be a truck driver since I was a young girl.
This was because my dad was a truck driver.'
John Kinyua – Operations Manager East Africa: 'Becky is the first female truck driver in East Africa.'
Becky: 'I love my job – I drive my travellers or guests to national parks to see wildlife “Ok My Guests! In front of us we have white rhinos”
At first, men used to give me a hard time, I used to be very bullied. Every place that we go to, they will react'.
George Njau – Workshop Manager: 'First time I came here, I was so shocked to see a lady driving a truck. A lot of companies call me, they say: George – there’s a lady driving your vehicle. I said: Yeah. “how?” What do you mean how?. You saw her driving it. “Does she fix it?” I said yeah, she services the truck on the side of the road. She changes tyres. People think she’s supposed to be back in the village or in the house, cooking for her husband or cooking for her kids.'
Becky: 'They would even come and block me in the front. Like in Tanzania, they scream. Those ones would tell me: “Becky! You’re not supposed to be driving a truck, you’re a woman. Why should you! Can’t you go home and do something better? Maybe take care of your family. Anything to make me feel like I’m not supposed to do this.
There were some men who were like “I don’t think she should be in the truck that I’m in” That day, I think I cried half of the day, and I never had cried before. George is one of the person I will never forget. Because if it was not for his encouragement, then, I was to quit.'
George: 'Becky I been like “don’t lose hope. You’ll find challenges. People talk bad about you, but keep strong, and you’ll make it.”
Becky: 'Nakoudini Amini – Nakoudini Amini is believe in yourself.'
Workshop team: 'I was very new. So she helped me with some tips for the road. And I wished for her to carry me. Take me for a ride. And… it was awesome.'
'I think she drives it like she was born with it. She knows the truck inside out. She does what I can do. She’s one of us. She’s not different from anyone.'
Becky: 'I have been driving trucks for Intrepid for the last six years.'
George: 'Becky is very famous. The police know her, even the border. They see her, and they are like “Bring it”. She comes here in the office and everybody is chatting up with her. She has to run away: “I have work to do”. She’s part of our family, and we’re really proud of her.
My daughter, she loves Becky so much because she is driving trucks. She call her Aunty Becky. “One day I’d like to drive like Aunty Becky”. I say: “even you can drive if you want to, just have the courage, determination, and you’ll make it through”. People think she has triumphed. She has done what a lot of females do not accomplish.'
Becky: 'I just told her once: “Mum, do you know that I’m a truck driver?” “Oh my goodness!” she looks up and says: “I wish your dad can see you”.'
George: 'She has made a lot of companies think about employing female drivers now. So we’re looking forward to having a second lady driver, just all because of Becky. She encourages a lot of women now. A lot of women are looking to do driving.'
Becky: 'You say: “I’m a go-getter”. You’ll get it, you’ll get whatever you want.'
George: 'I’m proud to say that, we have the first female driver in East Africa, and that is Becky.'

Grasshoppers are a popular crunchy treat in Uganda

In the East African nation of Uganda there's a huge appetite for an unusual local delicacy during the rainy season.
Fried grasshoppers have become a lucrative trade and businesses around the nation are making the most of the demand for the crunchy critters.
STORY-LINE:
A long-horned grasshopper walking up an iron sheet in the early hours of the morning.
It is unaware of the fate that soon awaits it, as one of Uganda's most loved local delicacies.
The crispy critters, called nsenene in Luganda, the most widely spoken local language in the East African nation, are in high demand during the rainy season, pushing many local businessmen to stop their day jobs for that period so they can take full advantage of the appetite for the protein-rich insects.
Also known as bush crickets, they're mostly consumed during Uganda's wet seasons, November until January and April until May.
The country's capital, Kampala, and the rest of central Uganda attract high concentrations of grasshoppers when the insects hatch with the first rains.
There are hundreds of traps set up across the capital.
This is the second year young businessman Reagan Kawalya is taking part in the lucrative trade.
We bring in the roofing sheets in November and setup the lights and the drums and wait for the grasshoppers to fall, Reagan says.
Every evening during grasshopper season he sets up a large contraption of lights, iron sheets, wiring and oil drums in a car park in Kampala's neighbourhood of Nsambya.
The nocturnal insects, attracted to the high voltage lamps, land on the smooth roofing sheets and slide down into the barrels.
Once the grasshoppers are in the drum, there is no way for them to fly out.
Reagan says staying up every night until the small hours is tough, but he cannot let the opportunity to make a good income pass him by.
In November, when there's lots of grasshoppers, a bag of 100 kilograms costs 200,000 (Ugandan shillings/ about 55 US dollars). When there's too much supply, the price can even go down to 70,000 (Ugandan shillings/ about 19 US dollars), he says.
But this season grasshoppers are scarce as the seasonal rainfall was much lower than normal.
In Uganda the rains arrived later than usual this year, affecting crop production across the country.
Market seller Silvya Namwavye says the limited supply makes the grasshoppers more sought-after by enthusiasts.
The grasshoppers are so delicious. They are only in season at certain times of the year. People will eat them because they know that's the only period they can eat the nsenene, Namwavye says.
It's way more delicious than chicken, or any meat for that matter, she adds.
Namwavye says she's worried about the decrease in insect numbers as the seasonal trade makes up an important part of her yearly income.
With my earnings, I have managed to educate my children, take care of my mother and family. My mother had no help but the Lord has helped me with this job, she says.
Namwavye cooks and sells grasshoppers from her market stall in the neighbourhood of Kamwookya, on a street lined with vendors selling both cooked and uncooked grasshoppers.
To prepare them for consumption, the wings, legs and antennae are plucked off while the insects are still alive.
The wing is very hard and the leg is very hard to eat and have. It might cause (inaudible) in your mouth and your stomach, says Josephine Ntimba, who makes a living by preparing grasshoppers for the Kamwookya vendors to cook.
The sellers then fry the insects with oil, onion and garlic.
One cup of cooked grasshoppers goes for as much as 10,000 Ugandan shillings (2.76 US dollars).
Local resident OJ Gerald was sent to the market to buy the delicacy for his wife.
