SOUTH AFRICA: NATIONAL DEFENCE FORCE TRAINING
English/Nat
South Africa's military, once seen as the iron fist of the apartheid regime, has had to march quickly to integrate black and white soldiers since the country's turn to democracy five years ago.
And now the South African National Defence Force is for the first time training men and women soldiers together.
The Army Gymnasium at Heidelberg.
It is one of two units that have integrated the training of male and female soldiers to supply the country's 16 army corps.
The other is Number Three Infantry Batallion which is the training depot of the South African army.
But there men and women are only trained to the level of rifleman for the Rapid Deployment Forces and part-time forces.
SOUNDBITE: (in English)
I think we're doing a great job. We're keeping up to the men's standards. We're working just as hard as them if not harder because we don't have that masculine physical ability. And I think it's great.
SUPER CAPTION: Tanya Fraser, Army recruit
SOUNDBITE: (in English)
I feel good about the whole thing. But I feel sometimes I am a woman in a man's world. But I'll make it and we, the ladies, are doing the best out of it.
SUPER CAPTION: Ladymore Babi, Army recruit
The 46-week course at Army Gymnasium includes ten weeks of basic training; a 13-week leadership development process; 12-weeks learning how to instruct new recruits; 13-weeks in which an individual soldier works towards becoming either a Non-Commissioned Officer or an Officer; and a final two weeks in which one is taught the basics of being a physical training instructor.
SOUNDBITE: (in English)
The Army Gymnasium's aim and function is to train leaders for the 16 official corps of the South African army and this is the first time that men and women will undergo this training at the same training institution, doing exactly the same training curriculum and
reaching the same objectives.
SUPER CAPTION: Colonel Antoni Bornman, Officer Commanding Army Gymnasium
During the Leadership Development Programme a soldier is assessed as to whether they make the grade to become a cadet or a Non-Commissioned Officer.
This decision is made on the individual's profile as well as the needs of the army.
It is in this phase that the soldiers are expected to walk 80 kilometres in three days in full kit.
Women soldiers carry a slightly lighter kit.
But it is in this phase that the leadership and military skills of the soldiers are put to the test.

TO GATHER - JOHN CLARKE
To Gather'
An exhibition of pastels, pencil and prints on paper by John Clarke
John Clarke is a consummate artist, author, printmaker and former art lecturer. Since 1973, he held solo exhibitions in most South African cities and participated in numerous group exhibitions here and overseas. He is represented in various public and private collections in the country as well as abroad.
His uniquely refined works of stones, poles and other objects are visually extremely gratifying and create the eerie atmosphere of a moon landscape. They convey a particular vision distilled from the experience of travelling, collecting and recording over many years. He has been cognizant of geological forms, the arid vastness of areas, mining activity, battlefields, domestic structures, and the artefacts and detritus op past and present inhabitants. In total, his work investigates the close interplay between inside and outside spaces.
His exhibition, To Gather, is opened in the Mackie Street art gallery of the Association of Arts Pretoria on Friday 16 August 2013 at 18h30 for 19h00 by the doyenne of South African art academics, Professor Karin Skawran. The closing date is 4 September 2013 and there is a walkabout on Saturday 24 August 2013 at 11h00.

SECOND BOER WAR - WikiVidi Documentary
The Second Boer War was fought between the British Empire and two Boer states, the South African Republic and the Orange Free State, over the Empire's influence in South Africa. It is also known variously as the Boer War, Anglo-Boer War, South African War or Anglo-Boer South African War. Initial Boer attacks were successful, and though British reinforcements later reversed these, the war continued for years with Boer guerrilla warfare, until harsh British counter-measures brought them to terms. The war started with Britain overconfident and under-prepared. The Boers were very well armed and struck first, besieging Ladysmith, Kimberley, and Mafeking in early 1900, and winning important battles at Colenso, Magersfontein and Stormberg. Staggered, Britain brought in large numbers of soldiers and fought back. General Redvers Buller was replaced by Lord Roberts and Lord Kitchener. They relieved the three besieged cities, and invaded the two Boer republics in late 1900. The onward marches ...

Top Billing experiences the Rovos Rail, a five-star time machine
The best journeys are ones worth taking slowly, saying – we get there when we get there – and staring at the magic outside your window as you go. That’s the joy of going by train, and this week, Jonathan catches one of the classics.
Rovos Rail is a five-star time machine that ambles at leisurely pace, transporting guests from across the world through the most evocative scenes Africa has to offer, to amongst its most renowned destinations.
These trains visit the Namib, take guests on golfing or birding safaris, host private events and it’s thanks to a moment of inspiration which struck in the mid eighties. When Rohan and his wife Anthea Vos took up a last-minute invitation on a Magaliesberg train trip for business suppliers, he was entranced and this world famous private train is the result.
Particularly for rail and steam enthusiasts, the private station at Capital Park, Pretoria is a treasure trove. Here each of the locomotives is named after the Vos children – Bianca, Tiffany, Shaun and Brenda Vos.
The dream ‘was’ tested. In ’94 these magnificent trains were close to breaking even but the banks were jittery. So Roland came up with a trip from Cape Town to Vic Falls, advertised it in the U.K. – it was a hit and he never looked back.
One of the highlights as the train descends the escarpment en route to Lions River Station is a visit here. The gallery of the famous Ardmore Ceramics which sell through auction houses like Sothebys, Christies and exhibit internationally in collections like The Museum of Art and Design in New York. We found Jon reading up on the train’s next stop.
The battle was one of four fought to relieve the besieged town of Ladysmith from surrounding Boer forces in nineteen hundred. Our guide Raymond Heron is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He described the fight in which the British tried and failed heavily to take this summit, with its panoramic view of the entire Northern and Central Drakensberg.
The same vantage point that gave Spionkop its military value offers spectacular views of this world heritage site - home to the largest concentration of battlefields in the Southern Hemisphere. The scenes make for endless photo opportunities and lively debate with other passengers about how history turned here. Jonathan would rejoin the conversation after a bath.
Amongst the dining cars on the various trains, some have been resurrected from scrap yards, extracted from shopping centres and restored or built from sleeper cars.
The final, great revelation of the trip is that when you can’t check your mails or whatsapp messages every five seconds, you can survive and actually rather enjoy life.
The Flawed Genius of Jan Smuts - History Documentary
Jan Smuts...“He was one of the most enlightened, courageous and noble-minded men of the 20th century...a man who fought for his country but who thought for the whole world”.......Winston Churchill.
“No politician in England for many a day has combined his sweep, his detachment and his subtlety” .....Manchester Guardian.
This was a great leader, he was a man who knew his story, he was a man who was a brilliant intellectual...Ken Gillings (Military Historian).
“Even the great thought he was great”.... Alan Paton
It was a great philosophical vision that he had that the whole is more important than the solitary or the individual.....Allister Sparks (Author and Political Commentator).
Once more General Smuts has revealed himself as a statesman with an international mind. He is one of the comparatively few great men in international politics......South Wales Argus.
Few actually understand how key Smuts is in the crafting of the world systems that emerges outside of South Africa......Keith Breckenridge (Economic History Professor)
Who was this South African Statesman who for more than half a century, played a leading role on
the domestic and international stage as warrior, statesman and counsellor of Kings?
He focused on uniting Boer and Brit after the Anglo-Boer War
Was caught up in a global arena between two world wars
...and served as a Member of the British War Cabinet in both wars.
Was accused of selling out to the British by the Afrikaners
...and neglected the disenfranchised in South Africa
HE WAS A MAN OF PARADOXES
A brilliant academic who believed in Reconciliation
...yet he spent the greater part of his life on the battlefield.
Reconciliation is what he wanted in a less draconian Peace Treaty with the Germans.
Reconciliation is central to the League of Nations, which he founded, and his preamble to the
United Nations Charter, which upholds human rights....
...yet, he failed to reconcile with the disenfranchised in South Africa for fear of losing white votes.
I cared more that he (Smuts) helped the foundation of the League of Nations, promoting freedom
throughout the world, than that he repressed freedom at home. Nelson Mandela
He was one of the greatest English orators of the 20th Century...
...and was appointed Chancellor of Cambridge and Cape Town universities and rector of St Andrews in
Scotland.
He was recognised by Einstein as one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century
He is recognised today by two of the world's leading historians as being at the very centre of the vision for a new world order that emerges from the League of Nations and the United Nations.
Yet, he is virtually persona non grata in his own country.... and largely ignored in school history books.
This one hour drama-documentary, with its dramatized cameo scenes in which his look-alike grandson
takes on the role of Jan Smuts, battle re-enactments, historical archival footage, comments from
historians, political analysts, and South African political struggle heroes, looks back on his life and the
circumstances that shaped it in search of some answers.
