Chimpanzee Trekking at Mahale - Tanzania
Experience the Mahane national park Chimpanzee Trekking with kearsleys travel & tours
Mahale Mountains is home to some of Africa’s last remaining wild chimpanzees: a population of roughly 800 (only 60 individuals forming what is known as M group), habituated to human visitors by a Japanese research project founded in the 1960s. Tracking the chimps of Mahale is a magical experience. The guide's eyes pick out last night's nests - shadowy clumps high in a gallery of trees crowding the sky. Scraps of half-eaten fruit and fresh dung become valuable clues, leading deeper into the forest. Butterflies flit in the dappled sunlight.
- Getting there
Charter flight from Arusha, Dar or Kigoma. Charter private or national park motorboat from Kigoma, three to four hours. Weekly steamer from Kigoma, seven hours, then hire a local fishing boat or arrange with park HQ for pickup in park boat, another one or two hours.
- To do
Chimp tracking (allow two days); hiking; camping safaris; snorkeling; fish for your dinner.
- Best time
Dry season (May-October) best for forest walks although no problem in the light rains of October/November.

Arusha City, Tanzania, 2018
Located at the bottom of Mt. Meru in northern Tanzania, Arusha city is the headquarters of the East African Community. It is also one of the most important tourist centres in East Africa, acting as the gateway to some of Africa's most famous tourist attractions, namely, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and the iconic snow capped Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Dating back to the German colonial era, Arusha city has a population of 416 442. Spatially, it has distinct central district (CBD) that is still mainly low rise with some scattered medium rise buildings particularly at its core. With exception of some paved street pavements, a well maintained big roundabout called Clock Tower Roundabout, and some private open spaces owned by some hotels, the city lacks adequate planned public urban spaces like squares, plazas, city parks, pedestrianized streets,, etc. Away from the CBD, low rise detached buildings become dominant.
Vividly noticeable in the city's overall spatial form is its low physical density. That provides great potential for densification through introduction of lets say skyscrapers and modern urban blocks for both commercial and residential uses. Such densification is probably the best future development option for the city and the CBD in particular, instead of some current proposals for satellite settlements.
Redevelopment of the city in the above way, could be very cost effective as it will allow optimization of the use of existing infrastructure, as well as avoiding high costs for land acquisition that are often characteristic of new satellite settlement projects. Redevelopment through densification could also allow the generation of good urban spaces like squares, plaza, pedestrianized streets, urban block inner courtyards, etc. Furthermore, such redevelopment could enhance the beauty of the city to a very great deal.
As a tourist centre, Arusha city offers many world class hotels that include Mount Meru Hotel, Four Points By Sheraton Arusha, Kibo Palace Hotel, Arusha Crown Hotel, and Impala Hotel among others. Also located in the city is an international conference centre. Furthermore, the city is served by a nearby international airport, namely Kilimanjaro International Airport.

The Mamas of Mulala.mov
Agape Tourism is a group of 8 women who have built a cheese, honey, and tourism business from the donation of one cow 20 years ago by the organization Heifer International. On the day we visited, Mama Anna and Mama Abu shared their culture with us, wrapping us in kangas and showing us how to roast coffee beans and carry bananas on our heads. What a wonderful time we had! They are amazing women, making a difference not only in their community but the hearts of these two travelers as well. Thank you Mama Anna and Mama Abu!
