Afton is a town in southwest Ottawa County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,049 as of the 2010 census, with population growth stemming from the near abandonment of nearby towns of Cardin and Picher because of ground contamination sites by local mining quarries. On the second of four road trips from southern California on Route 66 in my 1959 Cadillac, me and my traveling partner, Eric Wittman, stopped at the DAIRY RANCH DRIVE-IN at the Buffalo Ranch Complex in Afton, Oklahoma. We talked briefly with BETTY WHEATLEY who had owned the Dairy Ranch Drive-In since 1958. She operated the business for 42 years when it was finally closed for good after the 2000 Summer season. In 2004 the Buffalo Ranch was demolished and a new 24 hour travel center aptly named 'Buffalo Ranch Travel Center was built on the site. Anthony Reichardt Santa Ana, California

???? Drive America's Highways for 21 miles along Route 66 from Commerce to Afton, Oklahoma ????
We start our route at the Dairy King / Hole in the Wall Conoco station in Commerce and head back to the modern route 66 alignment at US 69 before turning south towards the town of Miami. At Miami, modern Route 66 turns southwest on US-69 while we continue on to Oklahoma 125 which is the original 1923 alignment that takes us to the first of the two sidewalk highways.
OK-125 eventually turns east while we continue straight on the local road before turning onto the ribbon road for a few miles until we hit US-69 just before Narcissa.
Continuing on US-69 for 5 miles, we turn right onto 190 road which is the other ribbon road -- the more well-known of the two, before crossing I-44 and ending this route at US-60 east of Afton.

Route 66: Sidewalk Highway/Ribbon Road, Afton, OK: Road Life More Life
When The Mother Road was formed through Oklahoma, the state did not have the funds to build 2 lanes of the historic highway, so in some portions of Oklahoma, only 1 lane was constructed. There are very few of these portions left at this point. This one is not far from the Afton Packard Museum, so 2 stops in 1 shot!
