Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Nebraska
Under the grass-covered hills along the Niobrara River in western Nebraska, sedimentary beds contain a rich concentration of 19-million-year-old fossils. Captain James Cook discovered the fossil beds in 1878 and acquired the site, called Agate Springs Ranch. Since then, fossil bones from the site have been exhibited around the world, and in 1965 the ranch became Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.

Totality - Solar Eclipse 2017 - Agate Fossil Beds Nebraska
We were able to make it into the path of totality for the eclipse during our out west trip '17 and we're filing this video for the record. Just a few days after the fact.
We thought we were choosing a remote and obscure location, but as it turned out a whole lot of people had the same idea and it just made the experience that much better.
Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is located a few miles outside of Harrison, Nebraska. If you are at all interested in paleontology, ancient mammals of the Miocene period, or American Indians of the 1800's- 1900's, Agate is a very good destination on it's own. Features include one of the greatest collection of Miocene fossils, James Cook collection of artifacts and items given to him by members of the Oglala Lakota Nation, hiking trails to the dig sites and more.

Agate National Monument - A Quick Stop (Vlog)
My daughter and I made a quick one-hour stop at Agate National Monument. We got to interview a Ranger, check out the fossils, view the Cook Gallery of Native American artifacts and then go for a brief stroll on the beautiful property. Agate is located in Western Nebraska.

Arthur Short Bull, Lakota Artist
Arthur Short Bull is a brilliant watercolorist whose vision strives to capture the spirit of his Oglala heritage. He has spent the last 17 years attempting self-sufficiency as an artist and gallery owner. What I hope to achieve through my
work is to help others see and experience the spirit that
exists in all things, states Short Bull.
Being raised in a traditional family on the Pine Ridge reservation gives Short Bull special insight into the history, culture and spirituality of the Lakotas. Arthurs great-grandfather was Grant Short Bull, uncle to famed artist and historian, Amos Bad Heart Bull and younger brother of He Dog. In 1930, the last of the old men who rode with Crazy Horse, He Dog and Grant Short Bull were two of Mari Sandozs sources for her book, Crazy Horse ... Strange Man of the Oglalas.
A recipient of the 2006 First Peoples Fund Cultural Capital Program Fellowship, Arthurs project involved utilizing his Wounded Knee series of paintings and poems as a vehicle to promote Lakota culture and history. He continues to develop this series as an educational tool to reach out to the Native community, primarily the youth, to increase their knowledge of Native history, especially in regards to Wounded Knee.
He also was a 2009 First Peoples Fund Business in Leadership Fellowship recipient.
Arthur was commissioned to paint one of the official White House ornaments for the 2007 Christmas tree used in the
Blue Room. He also painted three ornaments for the 2007 Nebraska State Capitol Christmas Tree. In keeping with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, artists from around the country were commissioned to paint specific scenes on the softball-sized ornaments sent

Crowley's Ridge is an unusual geological formation that rises 250 to 550 feet above the alluvial plain of the Mississippi embayment in a 150-mile line from southeastern Missouri to the Mississippi River near Helena, Arkansas.It is the most prominent feature in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain between Cape Girardeau, Missouri,and the Gulf of Mexico.This narrow rolling hill region rising above the flat plain is the sixth, and smallest, natural division of the state of Arkansas.Most of the major cities of the Arkansas Delta region lie along Crowley's Ridge.

The Great Plains occupy most of western Nebraska, characterized by treeless prairie, suitable for cattle-grazing. The state has a large agriculture sector and is a major producer of beef, pork, corn and soybeans. There are two major climatic zones: the eastern half of the state has a humid continental climate (Köppen climate classification Dfa), with a unique warmer subtype considered warm-temperate near the southern plains like in Kansas and Oklahoma which have a predominantly humid subtropical climate. The western half has a primarily semi-arid climate (Koppen BSk). The state has wide variations between winter and summer temperatures, decreasing south through the state. The Gold Star Kids Honor Flight brought together widows and children of military members from Nebraska killed in the War on Terror since September 11. The flight was modeled after previous honor flights for war veterans. As the families arrived at the Omaha airport, hundreds of people greeted them and hundreds more when the plane landed in Lincoln. And when they were recognized during a Nebraska football game, Memorial Stadium roared with applause.

Toadstool Geologic Park located northwest of Crawford, NE. Amazing formations created by volcanic debris that over time formed the rocks you see here. Flat plains and then this jumps up out of the earth.
Rock hounding (crystals) at Highway 97 and Westside road.
Took the kids out rock hounding today, looking for zeolites, quartz crystals, Amethyst, and found some citrine too. The new Westside road interchange off highway 97 in West Kelowna has blasted out some of Mount Boucherie's basalt revealing many fresh vugs full of all sorts of Silicates. Some quite exciting.
