Catalina Island Airport in the Sky
A short flight from John Wayne Airport Southern California to Santa Catalina Airport in the Sky. Mesa Departure 220 to the Huntington Beach Coastline and then NW along the coast to San Pedro and then South to the Island. I chose this course to limit the amount of time over the water as it is the shortest distance between coastlines. I'm not a flight instructor and I know there are many other ways to get from A to B so please offer comments if you wish. Thanks, Rick
Flying to Catalina Island Airport In The Sky (KHHR - KAVX - KHHR)
My good friend Demetrius and I where invited to the anual Fly-In BBQ event that Catalina Island Airport In The Sky hosts ever summer. We had a great time meeting new aviators sharing stories as well as eating some amazing food. I would like to thank Jeffrey Robert Moss or MossY for setting this entire thing up for us as well as Demetrius for inviting me! Overall we had a wonderful time and we're looking forward to coming back next summer!
Once again a BIG thanks to my good friend Demetrius for inviting me to come along on this flight, as well as MossY for setting everything up! On a side note getting to meet and speak with A380 Captain Arwyn was truly an honor, incredible guy!

Flying to Catalina Island
With a runway made from the tops of two mountains, the Airport in the Sky on California's Catalina Island is a beautiful spot to visit with the new friends you will meet at AOPA's Fly-In April 28 and 29 in Camarillo.

This was the 2nd time that I was flying the plane doing a takeoff and piloting for about 45 minutes before we toured Catalina Island for a day trip.
Flight to Catalina to See the New Runway!
Catalina Airport has been closed to the public since January 2019 to resurface the runway, which it really needed. The airport opened on Friday, May 3rd, so we went the very next day to check it out.

Camille and James explore the anchorage of Little Harbor on Catalina Island
Season 4 | Episode 60 | Exploring Little Harbor on Catalina Island
Hello Friends!
Coming in after dark we looked over the charts and sounded our way into 30ft of water and dropped the hook.
Sailing into an anchorage after dark is not advised but sometimes it is necessary and you just have to deal with it. We had both paper charts and digital charts and could see land masses for points of reference so we new we were anchored in a safe spot. Sailors have been anchoring in the dark for centuries but I feel the need to include this in the description because someone insulted me and questioned by seamanship because we anchored after dark, and its more than likely that that person as only ever gone day sailing and doesn't understand that when you are cruising sometimes you have to deal with situations that are not ideal, which is what we did, and we did it perfectly.
While the location we ended up anchoring in was safe it was not at all comfortable. We spent a very rolly night with a heavy swell rolling in but our anchor alarm never sounded and the hook held fast.
Upon first light and after a cup of coffee I hauled up the hook and we moved in closer to shore and behind the natural breakwater that makes Little Harbor such a wonderful anchorage. Finally dropping the hook with 9 ft of water under our keel.
This clear skies and a warm sun I took Camille out for her first ever snorkeling. As we both floated next to the boat Camille put her face in the water and pulled it right out and said there are two massive rays below us! The snorkeling was truly incredible and we got to see our first ever Shovel nosed guitar fish who circled back to give us a look.
After a full day of snorkeling and swimming we went ashore in search of Bison. Legend has it that a herd of Bison were brought to Catalina in the 1920s for a movie shoot and have remained there ever since.
We quickly found a pair and watched these mellow creatures for awhile.
Little Harbor ended up being the most amazing anchorage of the trip and editing this video for you all has made us want to go back RIGHT NOW!
Thanks to our Patrons, Your contributions help us get the boat in order to do big things!
Until Next Week,
James & Camille & SV Triteia

IAH Subway - Disney's 1980s Airport PeopleMover
Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport has a modern, fast, and high capacity people mover system to transport connecting passengers from one terminal to another... behind security. But down in the basement on non-secure side, there's another forgotten automated people mover system from the early 1980s that's still operating. And it has quite a history. In fact, it's the only WEDway people mover that Disney ever installed outside one of its own theme parks. The setting is just bizarre with with low ceilings, tight corners, and crazy 80s carpet. But this thing is really cool and might not be around forever. If you find yourself at IAH, head down to the basement and check it out!

Fire in the Sky
Neptune Aviation in Missoula, Montana is responsible for the care and maintenance of 9 Lockheed P2V air tanker planes. These planes are used to drop fire retardant now, but were originally designed in the fifties as maritime patrol and antisubmarine warfare aircraft. The planes were reworked to be used as fire tankers and are now used across the United States, particularly in the Rocky Mountains where they are in high demand during wildfire season.
The planes are the last of the radial engines and, although they are perfectly functional, their age is taking a toll. They require a lot of maintenance, including a yearly total breakdown of the aircraft. Each plane will have every piece of it removed, inspected, repaired if needed, and then returned to its rightful place on the plane. Many of the parts are not made anymore and have to be made by members of the numerous Neptune staff.
This system works for them, though. They have grown fond of their P2V's because of their classic structure, but they know that, eventually, they will be phased out with the new planes that are, at the moment, only a prototype. The current tankers will be in the air for quite some time to come. Planes were built to last forever, says Rick Gotie, the director of maintenance at Neptune. And, despite their age, the P2V's have done nothing but prove it.

Jefferson Graham brings the Photowalk cameras to Catalina Island, off the Los Angeles, for episode #46 of the Photowalk travel adventure series.
This edition inspired by Apple, which has named its latest macOS operating system after the island, macOS Catalina.
The Photowalk is all about searching for the best photo spots on the island, including the historic Casino, former William Wrigley mansion Inn at Mt. Ada, and where to get the best sunset and sunrise shots on the island. (Start with the best view shots on the boats.)
Along the way, Jeff takes a trip to the back country of the island, to Two Harbors and Airport in the Sky and meets some fascinating local characters.

Photography note: you need a permit to operate a drone, and those can be picked from the Catalina Conservancy or the city of Avalon.

The #Photowalks series is all about bringing viewers to cool places in the Southern California (and elsewhere) area in search of the best photo spots to light up your social media, and to show how, when and where to get them.
Past #Photowalk episodes include visits to Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Balboa Island, the Griffith Observatory and Venice Beach. We went outside the area to trek to Pismo Beach, a road trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, Tokyo and Kauai.
