here is a little glimpse of my adventures in Jokkmokk, Sweden during my semester abroad with Gustavus' Sweden Today program!
our week in Jokkmokk was filled with many fun adventures, beautiful sights, and lots of learning about Sami history and culture! after an 11 hour bus ride through the Arctic Circle and a good nights’ rest, we got to visit the Silba Siida Sami farm owned by Anna and Erik. it was incredible to see a glimpse of what daily life is like for a traditional Sami family. the next day, we visited the Ajtte Museum where we had a guided tour about Sami history, and we had a lot of fun in the interactive part of the museum where you could try the traditional joiking onstage, fly a helicopter (like the Samis do when the reindeer go up to the mountains in the summer), and of course, swat away at mosquitos (Carl-Erik was really good at that one). on Tuesday, we took a trip to Kiruna, which might be one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places I have ever been to. we had a lecture about climate change, had lunch at a cute little cafe, and then explored the beautiful city. after that, we toured the IceHotel, and had so much fun looking at all the ice sculptures and drinking warm lingonberry juice at the Ice Bar! when we were back in Jokkmokk, we had more lectures about the energy and climate work in the Jokkmokk municipality, and we even got to tour the district heating plant that used renewable energy sources to provide heat for all of Jokkmokk. that night, there was a ceremony to kick off the Jokkmokk Winter Market that featured traditional Sami dance, clothing, and song. the next day was the first official day of the Winter Market, and we got to go on a Moose Safari! this was my favorite day of the whole week! we had the most amazing guide, Christian, who was very knowledgeable about Jokkmokk and moose, and we ended up seeing 13 moose--almost double the record sightings for the season! then, we watched our friend Kirsten compete in the annual Reindeer Race, where she won her first race and advanced to the Semi-Finals. I didn’t get a lot of footage of the market because it was so cold, but we had a great time looking at all of the beautiful handmade goods!

Vintermarknad 2014
Ájtte under 2014 års vintermarknad bjöd på både traditionell jojk, strupsång, meänkieli, finska och mexikanska toner. Femton minuter med Jörgen Stenberg, Björn Uglem, Vaimo, John Kuoljok och Ranarex filmat i Gamla hallen på Ájtte museum i Jokkmokk.
Kollektbössan
Berättelsen en kollektbössas dramatiska historia som utspelar sig i Jokkmokks församling under flera hundra år. Filmen är inspelad i Jokkmokks gamla kyrka av Ájtte Svenskt Fjäll- och Samemuseum. Kollektbössan tillhör Historiska museet i Stockholm men är deponerad i Jokkmokks församling, stort tack till bägge!
Fnöskticka
Fnöskticka (Fomes fomentarius) har bland annat använts till att tillverka fnöske för eldslagning. Här visar vi hur man samlar in tickor, bereder dem till färdigt fnöske och gör upp eld. Filmen är inspelad i skogen utanför Jokkmokk och i parken utanför Ájtte museum. Fnöskticka ingår inte i allemansrätten, därför behövs markägarens tillstånd för att hämta dem.

I'm north of the Arctic Circle watching the Midnight Sun! This is a once in a lifetime journey, and you are all welcome to join me as I take the Inland Train to the northern part of Sweden. I visit places like Mora, Östersund, Vilhelmina, Arvidsjaur, Jokkmokk and Gällivare, and travel 1100km north of Stockholm - the capital of Sweden. In this, the last episode, I visit Arvidsjaur, Jokkmokk and Gällivare :) ...and this is exactly 6 months ago today!

The image is from the car park at the tourist Cetra road E45 / 374 from the direction Arvidjaur and was filmed using drone BLADE 350 QX and AEE S70 cameras. it is one of the first flights so the quality is not much, yet only slowly.
