We made a day trip to Al Ain during our last vacation in Abu Dhabi. One of the highlights in Al Ain is the Al Jahili Fort.

It is one of the largest castles in Al Ain and best-in-class example of local military architecture. Historically, Al Jahili Fort is of great importance as it is well associated with the history of the Al Nahyan Family.
One of the largest forts in the UAE, Al Jahili Fort was built in the 1890s on orders from Zayed The First. It served as a summer residence for the ruler. The natural climate control of the traditional mud brick has now been enhanced by embedding cold water pipes into the walls. The fort houses a permanent exhibition devoted to Wilfred Thesiger, the explorer, writer and photographer. It is a fine blend of the old and new.

Al Jahili Fort is a fort in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. The fort was established in 1891 around the Al Jahili Oasis for the protection of palm farmers. Later it was seized by the former Omani coastal scout for its operation to protect the mountain lanes and to preserve the inter-tribal peace. The fort was mentioned and recorded by several historical figures. Percy Cox, in his tour to Al Ain in 1905, reportedly visited the Al Jahili region. In 1906, J. G. Lorimer mentioned that the fort was constructed under the rule of Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan.
The fort is located on the southern part of the city of Al Ain, close to Al Ain Castle Museum. It is on the strategic location where exist water sources and agricultural land.
The fort is one of the largest castles in the city. It is a part of the bigger complex for public activity which includes public square. The fort is square shaped and has a length of 35 metres (115 feet) and height of 8 metres (26 feet). There are embrasures and triangular balconies on the top. It has three round watchtowers, and a rectangular watchtower on the northwestern corner. Round watchtowers have a diameter of 5 metres (16 feet), and a height of 14 metres (46 feet). The rectangular watchtowers has width and length of 4 and 7 metres (13 and 23 feet) respectively, and height of 14 metres (46 feet). The rectangular tower is considered stronger in terms of defensive capacity.
The fort was restored by the Department of Antiquity and Museum in Al Ain during the mid-1980s. It was later restored again by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage in 2007–2008, during which several infrastructures were put in place, including the visitors' office, gift shops, cafe and wider public square for exhibitions and cultural activities. The fort is planned to be rehabilitated in the future for bigger roles in the tourism and social activity in Al Ain region.

Al Jahili Fort is a fort in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. The fort was established in 1891 around the Al Jahili Oasis for the protection of palm farmers. Later it was seized by the former Omani coastal scout for its operation to protect the mountain lanes and to preserve the inter-tribal peace.
The original part of Al Jahili Fort consists of two buildings, a square fort and a separate round tower composed of four concentric tiers.
Surrounded by a lush park, this fairy-tale fort was constructed in the 1890s as the summer residence of Sheikh Zayed I (1836–1909) and expanded by the British in the 1950s. The original parts are the square fort in the far-left corner of the courtyard and the wedding-cake-tiered tower opposite. It won the prestigious Terra Award for the best Earthen Architecture in the world in 2016.
Today the compound houses a tourist center with temporary exhibitions (Zayed I, UAE Armed Forces etc) and a superb exhibit of photographs taken by British explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger during his multiple crossings of the Empty Desert in the 1940s.

Despite the scorching heat, my friends and I still decided to explore Al Jahili Fort and Al Ain Palace Museum located in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, UAE. This took place last June 1, 2019.
We enjoyed and learned so much about Al Ain's history in this little trip. ????????️

Constructed in 1898, the Al Jahili fort in Al Ain was the summer residence of Sheikh Zayed the First, and the birthplace of the late Sheikh Zayed Al Nayhan. It is an understated, elegant structure, whose protective walls and battlements have been well preserved. This is a significant place in the UAE's history. Commencing as Ruler's Representative in Al Ain, Sheikh Zayed began his personal campaign to improve the lives of his people, leading eventually to unification of the seven emirates into the United Arab Emirates becoming the federation's first President.

Between 2007 and 2008, the fort was restored and transformed into a cultural centre and tourist attraction that now houses a permanent exhibition devoted to Wilfred Thesiger, the intrepid explorer, travel writer and photographer, who crossed the Empty Quarter twice in the 1940s.
