Another successful event organized by Couchsurfing Jeddah is the Al Wahba Crater Hiking Adventure.
The Al Wahbah crater (Maqla Tamia in Arabic) is a volcanic crater, which is about 250 kilometres away from Taif, Saudi Arabia, (400 kilometers from Jeddah) on the western edge of the Harrat Kishb basalt plateau. The Harrat Kishb plateau contains many volcanic cones. It is 250 m (820 ft) deep and 2 km (1.2 mi) in diameter. The bottom of the crater is covered with white sodium phosphate crystals.

Discover Al Wahba Crater with Saudi Cargo
Al Wahaba crater (also spelled Al Waba) is located in the Saudi Arabian desert, 254 km from Taif on the western edge of the Hafer Kishb Basalt plateau, which contains many volcanic cones. This photogenic crater is the largest of its kind in the Middle East - 2 km in diameter with cliffs dropping 250 meters to a flat base, in the center of which is a thick crust of dazzling white sodium phosphate crystals. On one side of the crater lies an ash cone which is all that is left of the volcano. The crater is situated in an area where there was intense volcanic activity in the past. The surrounding sandy plain is in fact a bed of volcanic ash. To the north-west is a mound with a vertical face on the edge of the crater, which was an earlier volcano, split in half when the crater was formed. In this cliff face can be seen lava filled dykes. On the northern face of the crater are palm trees and green grass.

Al Wahba is the largest volcanic crater in the Middle East and Asia. The Crater is approximately 2 km in diameter and 400 metres in depth. It is located about 250 km northeast of Ta’if (southwest of Riyadh). Geologists have concluded that Wahba Crater is an extinct volcano. Some areas of the caldera walls have native flora as well as previously cultivated palm trees, the region’s famous Dom trees (named after the nearby town of Umm Dom), and Arak trees. At the bottom of the crater there is a small seasonal waterfall formed by precipitation in the region. Coating the center of the crater is a white layer of salt believed to be the evaporated residue of a shallow lake. Locals in the area have created stories and legends over the years about the origins of the crater, including the story that it was caused by an asteroid colliding into earth millions of years ago. Small pieces of obsidian and peridot (a semi-precious stone) can be found in the crater

It was amazing unforgettable travel experience in our life in al wahbah volcanic crater. we feel that sodium phosphate layer under the wahaba volcanic crater 30 mints walk, and we spend the time and feel the crater outer layer, return taken 1.30 hours.
Its 250 meter in deep and 2 kilometer diameter distance. Location is Al wahbah 250 kilometer far from Taif and 400 kilometer from Jeddah.

This was a two night camping trip from Riyadh to the Wahbah Crater in Saudi Arabia. This is a marr crater, believed to be formed by volcanic activity in the form of an underground phreatic eruption – a massive steam explosion generated by molten basaltic magma coming into contact with subterranean water. The crater is 250m (820ft) deep and 2km (1.2 mi) in diameter.
Although very windy before sunset it dropped progressively throughout the evening. We were all surprised by how heavy the dew was. The morning mist can be seen in a number of the shots. Sleeping bags were soaked through for those who slept under the stars.

Taif is a city in Mecca Province of Saudi Arabia on the slopes of Sarawat Mountains, the summer capital of the kingdom. The city is the centre of an agricultural area known for its grapes, roses and honey, Temperatures in Taif are not as extreme unlike other part of Saudi Arabia, It is much cooler in Taif during the summertime. during winter up to (-1) degree celcius.
When driving from Jeddah to Ta'if, non-Muslim travellers will have to use the non-Muslim bypass, you can Travel by land or Airbus if you're from Riyadh. Places to see: Baboon Park, Ta'if Zigzag Road, Telefric Cable Car, Taif Zoo, Al Rudaf Park, Al Kar's Resort and Al Wahbah Crater.
