Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, A Virtual Treadmill Video
Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail is a very historic trail on the West side of the big island of Hawaii.
Great for training for that next run or trail experience.
A Virtual Video is a great way to see some new virtual scenery while working out on that treadmill or exercise bike. Working out at the gym can be tedious at times, and I found that being able to be distracted by viewing new places and trails, when I am not able to actually get away, is much more entertaining than watching either TVs or workout screens, and makes the time go much faster.

Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail advocates thank Senator Akaka through song
Kalani Souza and Kaleo Paik of the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail Association serenade Senator Akaka in his Washington D.C. office, in a meeting with trail superintendent Aric Arakaaki. The song was a thank you to Senator Akaka for authoring the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail Act, enacted in 2000, which now allows them to buy land and preserve the trail. Ala Kahakai is a historic trail on the Big Island which ancient Hawaiians used to get from village to village, an irreplaceable part of Hawaii's heritage.

Ancient Wonder: Petroglyph Sites On Big Island, Hawaii-UHD 4K
Visited 2 petroglyph sites in the Big Island of Hawaii. The Big Island contains the largest number of petroglyphs, or prehistoric rock carvings, in the state of Hawaii as well as the Pacific region. Puakō Petroglyph Archeological Preserve, a 233-acre preservation area located near the Mauna Lani Resort in South Kohala, is home to the state’s second largest collection. Within the Puakō preserve more than 3,000 “images in stone,” or “k’i’i pohaku” have been identified, and although the true meanings of these symbols are unknown, it is generally believed they are a record of significant events in the lives of ancient Hawaiians. Within the preserve you can access an impressive field that contains about 1,200 of these petroglyphs, by taking an easy 1.5-mile walking trail. Walking through the trail leading to the petroglyphs site is quite enchanting.
Another petroglyph site is on the grounds of the Waikoloa Resort. The Waikoloa Petroglyph Preserve is a great place to have a close view of the Hawaiian petroglyphs. Many of the petroglyph fields in this area reside on the Ala Kahakai Trail, also known as the King’s Trail, full of historic sites including sacred heiau, Hawaiian fishponds and settlement ruins. Unfortunately graffiti is also out there so choose for yourself which are * real * & which are modern.
The Big Island is the largest and the southeastern-most of the Hawaiian islands, a chain of volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean. With an area of 4,028 square miles (10,430 km2), it is larger than all of the other islands in the archipelago combined and is the largest island in the United States.

HAWAII - USA Travel Guide | Around The World
Hawaii (Hawaiian: Hawaiʻi, sometimes pronounced ha-VAI-ee by locals) is the 50th state of the United States of America. Situated nearly at the center of the north Pacific Ocean, Hawaii marks the northeast corner of Polynesia. While it was once a major hub for the whaling, sugar and pineapple industries, it is now economically dependent on tourism and the U.S. military. The natural beauty of the islands continues to be one of Hawaii's greatest assets. Honolulu is the state's capital, largest city, and cultural hub. Hawaiian and English are the official languages of Hawaii.
Hawaii is an archipelago of over nineteen distinct volcanic islands located over a geological hot spot in the Central Pacific. The Pacific plate on which the islands ride moves to the northwest, so in general the islands are older and smaller (due to erosion) as you move from southeast to northwest. There are eight major islands, six of which are open to tourism.
Hawaii (Hawaiʻi) – almost always called the Big Island to avoid confusion – is the largest of the islands and home to Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa (the largest and one of the most active volcanoes on Earth), Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, coffee and macadamia nut plantations, working ranches, and even green sand beaches. Kailua-Kona is the busiest part of the island on the dry, leeward side, and near the mega-resort Kohala Coast area with nearly zero annual precipitation. The saddle road (quite passable and a must see--despite what rental car companies say) passes between the massive volcanoes and connects Kohala with Hilo, the largest town on the windward side with annual precipitation of more than 300 inches per year. Unlike anywhere else on Earth and definitely worth a look.
Oahu (Oʻahu), nicknamed the Gathering Place, is the most populous and developed island. Its southern shore is home to the city of Honolulu, the state capital and largest city; four out of every five kama'aina (Hawaii residents) call it home. It is the governmental and commercial center of the state, and Waikiki Beach is arguably the best known tourist destination in Hawaii. Outside the city are pineapple fields, and the North Shore of Oahu, which is known each winter as the home of some of the largest waves in the world. The USS Arizona National Memorial at Pearl Harbor is also very popular visitor destination.
Maui is the second largest island in the chain and is home to 10,023 foot (3,055 m) tall volcanic mountain crater of Haleakala. It is nicknamed the Valley Isle for the narrow plain between Haleakala and the West Maui mountains. On the west side of the island are the resort areas of Lahaina, Kaanapali and Kapalua, while the south side is home to Kihei, and Wailea. On the east side is the tiny village of Hana, reached by one of the most winding and beautiful roads in the world.
Kauai (Kauaʻi), the Garden Isle, is home to several natural wonders, such as the Wailua River, Waimea Canyon, and the Na Pali Coast. Mount Waialeale is known as one of the rainiest spots in the world.
Molokai (Molokaʻi), the Friendly Isle, is one of the least developed islands in the chain. It is home to Kalaupapa, the leper colony on Molokai's north shore that was the home of Father Damien.
Lanai (Lānaʻi) was at one time completely owned by Dole Foods and was the largest pineapple plantation in the world; it is now home to several exclusive resorts.
Niihau (Niʻihau) is a privately owned island with an entirely Native Hawaiian population. Until very recently, the island was off limits to all but family members and invited guests of the owners. Tourism to the island is limited to helicopter, ATV, and hunting excursions originating on Kauai.
Kahoolawe (Kahoʻolawe), which was once a former U.S. Navy bombing range, remains uninhabited. Efforts are being made to rehabilitate the island, but cleanup efforts continue.

Honokohau Falls | Kukui | Maui | Hawaii | plunges in two tiers for a total of 1100ft
Honokohau Falls is said to be the tallest waterfall on Maui as it apparently plunges in two tiers for a total of 1100ft.
In order for us to get to this waterfall, we had to take a helicopter tour since the falls was situated in an inaccessible valley in West Maui. This was our first ever helicopter ride (as we did this way back in September 2003) so we didn't really know what to expect. Basically, the lure of seeing the tallest waterfall on the island was enough to get us to do this.
Now with that being said, we almost weren't able to visit this waterfall even though we were going on a helicopter tour. We actually had to do a little bit of negotiating in order to even get to this waterfall on our chopper ride.
It turned out that as we were walking around in Lahaina, numerous tour vendors were trying to solicit our business, and one managed to get our attention with this Jurassic Park waterfall pitch. Apparently, the saleslady said that was Honokohau Falls (though I haven't really watched the Jurassic Park movies so I can't really say whether this waterfall was in it or not). However, later on in the conversation, she then tried to convince us that this waterfall and the Wall of Tears (supposedly a bunch of waterfalls tumbling down the mountain in one spot at a time) were the same thing.
Anyways to make a long story short, we looked past the obvious lies and went with this vendor (which was Air Maui) because they offered a pretty decent price (I don't recall exactly how much we paid though). But I knew whatever the saleslady promised wasn't going to be communicated to the pilot. So when we were in the helicopter, the way we communicated with the pilot was to write something on a notepad and hand it to him. That was when I asked about Honokohau Falls, and the pilot (grudgingly) complied. And it was a good thing he did because the Wall of Tears was a dud.
Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park located in the Kona District on the Big island of Hawaiʻi in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi. It includes the National Historic Landmarked archaeological site known as the Honokōhau Settlement. The park was established on November 10, 1978, for the preservation, protection and interpretation of traditional native Hawaiian activities and culture.
Honokōhau means bay drawing dew and refers to the ancient settlement on the south part of the park. This area can be reached via trails from the park visitor's center, or from the small boat harbor access road on Kealakehe Parkway.[9] Features include loko iʻa (Ancient Hawaiian aquaculture fishponds), kahua (house site platforms), kiʻi pōhaku (petroglyphs), hōlua (stone slides) and heiau (religious sites). The ʻAiʻopio Fishtrap is a 1.7-acre (0.69 ha) pond, with a stone wall forming an artificial enclosure along the naturally curved shoreline of a bay. Small openings allowed young fish to enter from the sea, but as they grew larger (or at low tide) they were easily caught with nets inside the trap as needed. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 as site 66000287.[citation needed]
Recreation[edit]
Several restored trails include about one mile of the Māmalahoa Trail.[10] It was built in the mid-19th century, and evolved over the years into the Hawaii Belt Road which encircles the entire island. The coastal trail is part of the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. The Honokōhau boat harbor provides a launching area for traditional canoes, fishing boats, Scuba diving and snorkeling tours of the area.
