Shakes Island, Wrangell, Alaska
On our 3 day cruise to Alaska we stopped off in Wrangell to check out Tyler's old stomping grounds, Shakes Island. Unfortunately, we only got to spend about 11 minutes here, but we got to see the beautiful longhouse and some of the totem poles during their restoration.

Alaska Story Time with Aunt Phil, Alaska's Glacier Pilot, Aug. 20, 2018
Legendary Alaska pilot Robert Bob Campbell Reeve, commonly known in Alaska as the Glacier Pilot, is the subject of this segment of Alaska Story Time with Aunt Phil. This episode first aired on Anchorage CBS affiliate KTVA Channel 11 Daybreak on Aug. 20, 2018.
One of Alaska’s most respected bush pilots died this week 38 years ago. Robert “Bob” Campbell Reeve, known by many as the Glacier Pilot, passed away in his sleep on Aug. 25, 1980.
Reeve may be best known for building a successful airline that bore his name. Reeve Aleutian Airways served Alaskans for more than half a century.
The Wisconsin native had become intrigued with Alaska after hearing stories about the north while flying in South America. After a brief visit in the states, and a bout with polio that bothered one leg for years, he stowed away on a steamship in 1932 with only a few cents in his pocket.
He first arrived in Anchorage, but found too many pilots were in town, so he moved on to Prince William Sound. A chance encounter with Valdez aviator Owen Meals started Reeve down his long and distinguished career in Alaska’s skies.
Meals had just crashed his single-engine biplane and Reeve, one of the nation’s first certified airplane mechanics, repaired it. Reeve then leased the plane, cleared an airstrip in a cow pasture and began a charter business.
His 2,000-plus glacier landings earned him the nickname Glacier Pilot. After starting his charter business, Reeve spent the next 15 years flying as a bush pilot around the Great Land. Along with his many glacier and ice field landings, he also pioneered new flight routes to get to hard-to-reach mines and developed a method for landing on mud flats with skis.
He bought his first plane, a Fairchild 51, in the winter of 1932. Four years later he bought a Fairchild 71. After moving to Anchorage in 1942, he winged his way across Alaska, the Aleutians and Western Canada while under contract with the military. Following the end of WW11 Reeve bought a surplus DC-3 C-47, converted it to civilian use and birthed Reeve Aleutian Airways Inc. to serve the people of the Aleutian Chain.
The bush pilot’s airline grew during the 1950s-60s and soon DC-3s, DC-4s and other types of aircraft were added to the fleet. He turned the business over to his son, Richard, in 1978 and the company entered the jet age. But competition and deregulation spelled the end of the family business in 2001.
The Glacier Pilot died in his sleep on August 25, 1980, and was inducted into the Alaska Aviation Pioneer Hall of Fame in 2005.

PLANNING A TRIP TO ALASKA Summer is the best time to explore Alaska. Temperatures are not a brisk and the daylight hours will be longer, so you will have more time in your day to see the state. You will need to start planning your trip at least a year in advance. Doing this will make dates and times easier to book for your adventures. Visiting Alaska in the summer does not mean that you will not get to experience a winter activity. At Seavey's IdidaRide you can experience a dog sled ride. The dogs will pull you on gravel instead of snow. You will also be able to meet some of the new dogs and learn about the sport. If you would like a little more freedom to explore, visiting Denali State Park may be a better option for you and you family rather than visiting Denali National Park. At the national park you are not allowed to drive in the park and you must rely on the bus/tour transportation with set stops through the park. While in the state park you can drive to a trail and hike different areas of the park. Anchorage is a great location to use as a central port. You can fly right into Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and drive to the surrounding areas and explore. Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve is a bit of a drive outside of Anchorage. Starting in Chitina is a 16-mile gravel path. You must be careful driving on this path. They warn you not to drive a RV on the path because if you breakdown you will not be able to get out. But you can park in Chitina and arrange a flight out of the Kennicott Glacier Lodge that will take you into the mountains. Once you are there it is stunning and you can book a different tours like a full day ice climbing tour, or a glacier walk, etc. . It is said that renting cars in Alaska is very expensive, but in reality it is not all that different then renting a car in DC. Especially if you book your rental in advance along with the rest of your trip. But a good tip would be too keep an eye on prices and if they drop rebook your rentals. BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO Nancy and her family hired a photographer to take their photo with Resurrection Bay in the background. This was a superb location with the crystal water, mountains and greenery.
FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Nancy and her family made multiple trips to REI before their trip to Alaska. Hiking boots were number one on their list of needed items, along with rain pants that came in handy for their time kayaking. They also made sure to wear layers during their trip so that they could shed clothes if the weather was a bit warmer.

Bore Tide Cabin
Bore Tide Cabin is a US Forest Service cabin attached to the Bird Creek campground. The campground is 20 miles south of Anchorage, and the cabin is on a driveway off of the north side of the campground. If the gates are open, you can drive right up to it. Although the location is very close to a fairly busy campground and highway, the cabin has a very secluded feel to it aside from the highway noise. The cabin is open and available year-round, but the camp ground is not and the gate is locked in the winter.
Firewood was not advertised, so we brought our own. However, we were pleasantly surprised to find a stocked wood pile with wood splitting tools stored inside. Water is available from pump wells in the campground, and the campground toilets are about 100 yards away.

The Charter Boat Ursa Major in Ford's Terror Wilderness Area, Alaska - a Drone's Eye View
We visited the Tracey Arm/Ford's Terror Wilderness Area again in July 2015 on a charter trip, and captured this amazing video of the tidal rapids at Ford's Terror at (nearly) maximum flood. At maximum flood (or ebb) in Ford's Terror, 6-8 ft standing (tidal) waves will form at the entrance to this narrow fjord approximately every 6 hours with the diurnal tides present at this latitude.
Visit myursamajor.com for more information on Ursa Major Charters, and our Alaskan Adventure Trips. Our Alaska Adventure trips are multi-activity trips and include something for everyone. Trip activities include wildlife viewing, photography, kayaking, and hiking, and our trip itineraries are customized based on guest preference, and vary trip by trip. Our trips between Sitka and Peterburg take us along the eastern side of Baranof Island, also known as The Waterfall Coast due to the extensive amount of continuous falling water found there year-round. The glacially-carved fjords found along that coast are among of the most spectacular wildlife viewing and paddling spots in all of southeast Alaska.
