In 1952, a C-124 crashed into Mount Gannett in the Chugach Mountain Range
in Alaska. 60 years later, the Army National Guard located some wreckage from the C-124 crash
on a routine training mission. Every year since, a team has traveled to the glacier to recover
human remains and aircraft wreckage.

America's Wildest Places - Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge
The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is the most remote and far flung unit of the National Wildlife Refuge System. A place of great distances and greater dramas, the Refuge includes the spectacular volcanic islands of the Aleutian chain, the seabird cliffs of the remote Pribilofs, and icebound lands washed by the Chukchi Sea. Established in 3.4 million acres, the Refuge is home to mammals such as the polar bear, northern fur seal, Steller sea lions, otters and walruses; 40 million seabirds of more than 30 species such as puffins, auklets, cormorants and other migratory birds, and the marine resources upon which they rely.
Because it is spread out along most of the 47,300 miles of Alaska's coastline, the sheer span of this refuge is difficult to grasp. Its more than 2,500 islands, islets, spires, rocks, reefs, waters and headlands extend from Forrester Island, to the north of Canada's Queen Charlotte Islands deep in the southeast tongue of the state, to the westernmost tip of the Aleutians (and of America!), and north to Cape Lisburne on the Arctic Ocean. Traveling between its farthest-flung points would be the equivalent of taking a trip from Georgia to California.
So many facets of Alaska's history happened on the lands and waters of the Alaska Maritime Refuge that the Refuge seems like a time-capsule story of the state and the conservation of island wildlife.
Pre 1800s -- The first people come to the islands, the Russian voyages of discovery, the beginnings of the fur trade, first rats and fox introduced to islands, Steller sea cow goes extinct.
1800s -- Whaling, America buys Alaska, growth of the fox fur industry, beginnings of the refuge.
1900 to 1945 -- Wildlife Refuge System is born and more land put in the refuge, wildlife protection increases through treaties and legislation, World War II rolls over the refuge, rats and foxes spread to more islands.
1945 to the present -- Cold War bases built on refuge, nuclear bombs on Amchitka, refuge expands and protections increase, Aleutian goose brought back from near extinction, marine mammals in trouble.
Getting There
The refuge is headquartered in the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center located in Homer, which is at the end of the Sterling Highway, approximately 225 miles south of Anchorage. Regularly scheduled flights are available from Anchorage. The Alaska State Ferry System also serves Homer. Since most of the refuge is very remote, access is difficult and expensive. Tourists and visitors should contact the refuge for specific information about particular sites.

Kenai Fjords National Park is a United States National Park established in 1980 by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. The park covers an area of 669,984 acres (1,046.85 sq mi; 2,711.33 km2)[1] on the Kenai Peninsula in southcentral Alaska, near the town of Seward. The park contains the Harding Icefield, one of the largest ice fields in the United States. The park is named for the numerous fjords carved by glaciers moving down the mountains from the ice field. The field is the source of at least 38 glaciers, the largest of which is Bear Glacier. The park lies just to the west of Seward, a popular port for cruise ships. Exit Glacier is reachable by road and is a popular tour destination. The remainder of the park is primarily accessible by boat. The fjords are glacial valleys that have been submerged below sea level by a combination of rising sea levels and land subsidence.
Kenai Fjords National Monument was initially designated by President Jimmy Carter on December 1, 1978, using the Antiquities Act, pending final legislation to resolve the allotment of public lands in Alaska. Establishment as a national park followed the passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act in 1980. The park protects the icefield, a narrow fringe of forested land between the mountains and the sea, and the deeply indented coastline. The park is home to a variety of terrestrial and marine mammals, including bears, whales, seals and moose,More info

RV'ing Alaska's Inside Passage
The adventure begins on beautiful Vancouver Island in British Columbia with a visit to Telegraph Cove, possibly the best place on Earth to view Orca (killer whales). We continue north to Ketchikan, Alaska's first city on the Inside Passage. Here we explore the spectacular Misty Fjords National Monument by kayak and float plane. We also learn about the art of totem pole carving and watch as they are created. A short side trip by ferry takes us to Prince Of Wales Island, which has more than 2,000 miles of logging roads for exploration. The island is also known for its luxury fishing lodges.
Wrangell calls itself Alaska's Hidden Jewel and is paradise for those seeking outdoor adventure! Many say that if you're looking for the real Alaska, you'll find it here. The Anan Bear Observatory is considered to be one of the best in the state and the only place where black and brown bears feed together. We take an exciting jet boat tour up the Stikine River - the last great un-dammed river on the continent - and visit Telegraph Creek as well as the Grand Canyon of the Stikine.
The ferry becomes part of the adventure as we head north through the Wrangell Narrows - the single most difficult navigational stretch on the Passage. Petersburg is Alaska's Little Norway and Southeast's busiest processing port, home to the area's largest fishing fleet. Sitka was once the Russian capital of Alaska and is one of the most beautiful spots on our route. We explore the town's history and native culture. The Alaska Raptor Center offers a close-up at eagles. A wildlife cruise to St. Lazaria Island lets us observe whales, puffins, sea lions and otters. A snorkeling tour reveals Alaska's underwater world.
Juneau is the state capital. The biggest attraction is Mendenhall Glacier, which we explore with an exciting helicopter tour and glacier trek. Some of the best humpback whale watching is within a short boat ride of town. Incredible glacier calving and towering cliffs can be seen at nearby Tracy Arm. Side trips take us to beautiful Glacier Bay and the quirky little town of Pelican.
Our adventure ends with a tour of historic Skagway and more wilderness adventures in Haines, including a river tour, an air boat ride and panning for gold.
Imagine taking a tour of Alaska and bringing your home along for the ride! Join us on our RV adventure and get helpful tips to plan your own. - views before 6/12 - 4,190 - uploaded 9/7/09

Alaska Kenai Peninsula
Speaker/author Charlie Adams shows you the Kenai Peninsula. Nothing about the Kenai Peninsula is formal or stuffy. In fact, no other destination offers such an up close and personal Alaskan experience. With over 15,000 square miles of extraordinary adventure and excitement to choose from, even the rest of the state comes here when they need a reminder of why they moved to Alaska in the first place. That's why it is known as Alaska's Playground.
Here, you will see killer whales, massive glaciers, and more!
Charlie is the author of 'How to Build a Positive Attitude and KEEP the Darn Thing!!' and three other books on inspiration, including Stoke the Fire Within. He delivers keynotes and seminars to companies, colleges and schools, and churches. For more information:
Since 2006 Charlie has hosted group travel trips for Edgerton's Travel, where he shares inspirational stories and humor along the way. He also produces a 60 minute DVD documentary for travelers. Here on youtube, he shares short clips from the documentaries to show you places that you may want to visit or return to one day. The Best Town in Alaska for Wildlife Viewing!
Valdez, Alaska in an RV is the best way to experience this small ocean side town. Valdez is nestled among fjords on Prince William Sound. You probably know it as the primary location affected by the Exxon Valdez oil tanker spill in the 80s.

It was the perfect spot for us to hide out for a week between Tim’s crazy Dalton adventure and the arrival of Tim’s parents the following week in to Anchorage.
It was SO NICE to finally be next to the ocean. After being in an RV for months driving through the center of North America we finally reached the coast. This finally felt like the RV experience we had been looking for. We had all the comforts of “home” as well as adventure and beautiful views right outside our door.
Valdez is a very very small town with only a few restaurants, a Best Western hotel, and LOADS of RV parks.
Somehow we managed to call the same day and get a spot right on the water at the Bear Paw RV Resort.
We had to move spots due to availability after a few days in to town, but there’s not a bad RV spot around. Every where you look you are surrounded by mountains, waterfalls and bald eagles.
It was really nice here catching up on work. The fact that Valdez Alaska is one of the wettest places in north america meant we spent a lot of time inside. We didn’t do much vlogging… hence the abnormal amount of voiceover in this episode, but we want to show what Valdez has to offer as it was one of our favorite places in the state.
It’s popular to take a day cruise out to the near by the Columbia Glacier. We opted out mostly because we were using this week to work and it was a little long to leave Pepper at home. We did love all of the other things to do in town.
Our favorite was the Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery.
Every year this hatchery releases approximately 230 million pink salmon and 2 million coho salmon. The fish later return to the hatchery by entering the facility using a fish ladder which carry the fish from Prince William Sound “up stream”. This process is known as ocean ranching and occurs every year!
The amount of fish here was just astounding. This of course made the entire area a popular destination for other wild life.
Just up the road at other river inlets is a popular place to spot our favorite animal right off the side of the road. BEAR
There’s only one road in and out of Valdez so you’ll definitely won’t miss Bridal veil falls and the X glacier on your way in and out, unless of course you’ll be riding the ferry on the Alaska Marine highway which can take you down to south east Alaska or up closer to Anchorage.
It was time to head to Anchorage where we met up with a couple who had found us through our New Zealand videos. Fortunately for us they happen to be the owners of Double Shovel Brewing in Anchorage and were wonderful hosts for the evening.
So at this time, Double Shovel isn’t on Harvest Hosts yet, but there is one harvest host in Anchorage. We would definitely recommend checking them out because, surprisingly enough, downtown Anchorage had THE WORST RV options we’ve seen the entire trip.
Another big thanks to Galen and Morgan who made our visit to Anchorage very memorable, or not… if you know what I mean.
Stay tuned for Sunday where we head to Seward with Tim’s parents and kayak to the Aialik Glacier with one of the funniest people we met on the trip…
