Albany County is a county in the state of New York, in the United States. Its northern border is formed by the Mohawk River, at its confluence with the Hudson River, which is on the east. As of the 2010 census, the population was 304,204. The county seat is Albany, the state capital of New York. As originally established by the English government in the colonial era, Albany County had an indefinite amount of land, but has had an area of 530 square miles since March 3, 1888. The county is named for the Duke of York and of Albany, who became James II of England . Albany County constitutes the central core of the Capital District of New York State, which comprises the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Albany to Schenectady Bike Ride

We drove down to the Corning Preserve in Albany NY. There is a bike trail that goes from Albany to Watervliet along the Hudson River. If you head south, you can see the WWII USS Slater and the Dutch Apple Cruise boat. The roads aren't marked well, but you can continue south and connect to the Helderberg-Hudson Rail trail (It goes 10 miles to Voorheesville).
Heading north from the Corning Preserve, the trail ends in Watervliet. You have to ride on the road past the Watervliet Arsenal. You then cross under I787 into Green Island. Still riding on the road you eventually cross I787 in Cohoes. You go up a hill and you get back on a nice Rail Trail. This trail goes along the Mohawk River and passes the Colonie Town Park, Niskayuna Train station, KAPL, and GE Global Research. Although not completed, this trail goes all the way to Buffalo!
We got off the trail at the Rexford Bridge and headed toward Vischer Ferry on Riverview Rd. We did 39 miles. Nice Day!

The mission of the Friends of Five Rivers is to support environmental education at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. The Friends of Five Rivers provide both the Guided School Program and the Summer Family Program, which have touched the lives of nearly 200,000 school children and adults by giving them hand-on environmental learning in and appreciation of the outdoors. The Friends of Five Rivers also train and supervise all volunteers working at the Center, maintain the Nature's Backyard Trail for those with disabilities, oversee a bus scholarship program for schools who could not otherwise reach Five Rivers, manage a high school scholarship program for students in an environmental field, run a Birdseed Sale and Fall Festival, and much more. The Friends of Five Rivers depend on a passionate and generous membership to exist. We therefore urge you to JOIN, GIVE, VOLUNTEER to help us continue our mission and sustain these important environmental programs in our community!
