London Bridges, Albert Bridge, (London's most Beautiful Bridge) 2018 Roamin Roy
London's Most Beautiful Bridge is without doubt the Albert Bridge.
The Albert Bridge shares with Tower Bridge the distinction of being the only two London bridges never to have been replaced.
The bridge has a rather unusual history in terms of its design. Originally drawn up by engineer Rowland Mason Ordish, it was a combination of a suspension bridge and a cable-stayed bridge, which in layman terms means it that its chains fan out from the towers across the bridge (cable-stayed elements) and they’re supported by vertical hangers (suspension element). However, this design needed strengthening in 1884 — just 11 years after it originally opened. This was overseen by Sir Joseph Bazalgette, who replaced the steel cables with steel link chains
The Trembling Lady, (as it was known, because it oscillated badly when soldiers marched across it) underwent several reconstructions and overhauls in her 134 year history, the latest of which was carried out in 2010 and 201. It gave her 4,000 LED lights and a new colour scheme designed to enhance her visibility..
Today, there are serious concerns about the condition of the partly wooden span, which is rotting from the urine of millions of dogs whose owners cross the bridge to walk their territorial pets in Battersea Park.
THE TREMBLING LADY SAVED BY THE POET LAUREATE
Due to her many problems, there were plans in the 1950s to destroy the Trembling Lady. Fortunately, these plans were never implemented. Her saviour was the Poet Laureate John Betjemen. Since his house on the embankment was close to Albert Bridge, he he had an excellent view of the Bridge. Because he was a great admirer of the Trembling Lady, he campaigned tirelessly to save her. He described her as:
“shining with electric lights, grey and airy against the London sky; it is one of the beauties of the London river.”
Thus was the ‘Trembling Lady’, London’s most beautiful bridge, spared from the scrap yard by Sir John Betjeman CBE, Poet Laureate.
Albert Bridge - Scotland's British Heritage
Alistair McConnachie of aForceForGood.org.uk visits Albert Bridge in Glasgow, which is going to be renovated in time for the British Commonwealth Games in 2014. He points out that this outstanding Bridge was made to last by our Victorian ancestors, and its structure is sound. It only needs a little bit of love and caring attention to prepare it to face the years ahead - a bit like the union of our United Kingdom itself.

TRANSCRIPT
My name's Alistair McConnachie. It's Tuesday the 14th of May 2013 and I'm here today in the Great British City of Glasgow.
I'm standing beside Albert Bridge, which is one of the main thoroughfares into Glasgow city centre.
And during the 2014 British Commonwealth Games, it's going to be one of the main routes to the Games.
It's been standing here since 1871 and it's named after Queen Victoria's consort, Prince Albert.
It's a great example of Victorian Engineering and Architecture, and a great example of Scotland's British Heritage, which is all around us.
I'm going to make a comparison here between this Bridge, and the state of the Union, itself.
On the face of it, this Bridge appears to have seen better days.
Let's take a look around.
So, while it may appear to have seen better days, when you look closely at the structure, you can see that it is still very sound.
Like everything our Victorian ancestors did, they built this bridge to last.
And so there's no need to tear this bridge down. There's no need to break it in half. There's no need to split it up.
It is still an outstanding example of engineering which is here to stay.
All it needs is a little bit of renovation in order to rejuvenate it for the years ahead.
It's still a very good example of a British creation, whose structure is basically sound, and just needs a little bit of attention in order, not only to restore it to its former glory, but also to prepare it for the challenges of the years ahead.
And the good news is that's going to be done!
The Council are spending upwards of £2.6 million pounds this year, in order to scrub it up in time for the British Commonwealth Games next year.
They're going to replace all the iron capping that's broken. They're going to grit-blast the surface. Then they're going to repaint it in its original colours. And then they're going to install new lighting which will replicate the original lighting.
So it's going to look good in time for the British Commonwealth Games next year.
And we'll be back next year to see what it looks like.
In the meantime we're going to be travelling around Glasgow and throughout Scotland to identify some of the cultural, and social, and historical, and architectural, and military, and religious, and economic themes which help us to illustrate why we are where we are today.
Which help to Paint the Big Picture of Scotland in Britain.
In the meantime you can go to our website a Force For Good dot org dot uk.

Albert Bridge from north Thames Embankment, Chelsea, London. 1.10am June19th. 2007.
The Albert Bridge is a road bridge spanning the River Thames between Chelsea and Battersea in London, England, named in memory of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Prince Consort to Queen Victoria.
Although authorised by an Act of Parliament in 1864, construction was delayed by work on the Chelsea Embankment and did not begin until 1870. The bridge opened first on the 31st December 1872 but closed again shortly after, to re-open on 23 August 1873. The designer was Rowland Mason Ordish, who conceived a rigid suspension bridge with a length of 710 feet, width of 41 feet and a centre span of 400 feet. Its construction cost about £90,000.
The Albert Bridge Company also owned the adjacent Battersea Bridge, but neither bridge generated sufficient toll income to cover their maintenance costs. In 1878 both were bought by the Metropolitan Board of Works, and they ceased to be toll bridges the following year.
In 1884 Sir Joseph Bazalgette strengthened and modernised Albert Bridge, rendering it more like a conventional suspension bridge.
The bridge came close to being replaced after World War II, but a concerted campaign led by, among others, Sir John Betjeman led to its conservation. In the 1970s, central supports were added by the Greater London Council to save the structure from collapse. Weight restrictions have been in place since Bazalgette's time, as have notices requiring soldiers from nearby Chelsea Barracks to break step when marching over the bridge for fear that vibrations might damage the structure.
