Legendary Dance Halls: Visit Fredericksburg TX
Vintage dance halls are a big part of Texas culture and Texas history. Many a Texan took their first dance steps on wooden floors, polished by generations of scooting boots.
The Fredericksburg area is home to four legendary dance halls where you can still pull on your boots and faded jeans and be carefree, dancing the night away—sometimes even under the Hill Country stars.
Our most famous dance hall is Luckenbach Texas. The dance hall was built in the late 1880s, but Luckenbach's fame was fueled in the 1970s when Jerry Jeff Walker recorded Viva Terlingua live in the dance hall; and later that same decade, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson sang the hit song, Back to the Basics of Love, otherwise known as Luckenbach Texas.
You'll find live music here almost every day, along with dances on Friday and Saturday nights, and popular festivals throughout the year.
Just a few miles down the road in Albert, Texas you'll find the Albert Ice House and Dance Hall. Coincidentally, both Luckenbach and Albert were named after the same man: Albert Luckenbach.
The Albert Dance Hall was built in the early 1920s, but closed its doors in the mid 1980s. Within the past decade, it has been fully restored. Today, Albert Ice House and Dance Hall is a vibrant place—open four days a week, offering ice-cold beer and live music. Dances, concerts and private parties are held here on a regular basis.
Back in Fredericksburg, Turner Hall was built in the early 1900s. Today, the Fredericksburg Dance Club holds dances in this historic hall eight times a year. Dances are usually held the first Saturdays of each month, skipping only the first day of hunting season, Oktoberfest, and the summer months.
Also in Fredericksburg, Pat's Hall reopened in 2012. First known as Seipp's Dance Hall when it was built in the 1920s, it was renamed Pat's Hall in the 1950s. It became popular for its outdoor pavilion, where young lovers danced underneath an old oak tree and the Hill Country stars. Country music greats such as Willie Nelson, Moe Bandy and George Strait all played at Pat's Hall before it closed in 1985.
Today Pat's Hall holds public dances featuring traditional country bands at least once a month, and it is rented out for all types of private parties and social events.

The Texas White House-LBJ Ranch National Historical Park
The LBJ National Historical Park is a short day trip from San Antonio. Favorite route is up I-10 and over through Fredericksburg. Catch the LBJ Ranch and then on over to Johnson City for both the Johnson Settlement and LBJ childhood home. If you have time it's a short jaunt into Austin from there or swing by The Salt Lick on the way home. Mmmmm.

The counterculture of the 1960s was an anti-establishment cultural phenomenon that developed throughout much of the Western world between the mid-1960s and the mid-1970s. The aggregate movement gained momentum as the Civil Rights Movement continued to grow, and would later become revolutionary with the expansion of the US government's extensive military intervention in Vietnam. As the 1960s progressed, widespread social tensions also developed concerning other issues, and tended to flow along generational lines regarding human sexuality, women's rights, traditional modes of authority, experimentation with psychoactive drugs, and differing interpretations of the American Dream. Many key movements related to these issues were born or advanced within the counterculture of the 1960s.As the era unfolded, new cultural forms and a dynamic subculture which celebrated experimentation, modern incarnations of Bohemianism, and the rise of the hippie and other alternative lifestyles, emerged. This embracing of creativity is particularly notable in the works of British Invasion bands such as the Beatles, and filmmakers whose works became far less restricted by censorship. In addition to the trendsetting Beatles, many other creative artists, authors, and thinkers, within and across many disciplines, helped define the counterculture movement.
Several factors distinguished the counterculture of the 1960s from the anti-authoritarian movements of previous eras. The post-World War II baby boom generated an unprecedented number of potentially disaffected young people as prospective participants in a rethinking of the direction of the United States and other democratic societies. Post-war affluence allowed many of the counterculture generation to move beyond a focus on the provision of the material necessities of life that had preoccupied their Depression-era parents. The era was also notable in that a significant portion of the array of behaviors and causes within the larger movement were quickly assimilated within mainstream society, particularly in the US, even though counterculture participants numbered in the clear minority within their respective national populations.The counterculture era essentially commenced in earnest with the assassination of John F. Eleanor Jones Harvey, Senior Curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, delivered the keynote address at the 2014 Summer Institutes: Teaching the Humanities through Art. George Henry Thomas (July 31, 1816 – March 28, 1870) was a United States Army officer and a Union general during the American Civil War, one of the principal commanders in the Western Theater.
Thomas served in the Mexican–American War and later chose to remain with the U.S. Army for the Civil War as a Southern Unionist, despite his heritage as a Virginian (whose home state would join the Confederate States of America). He won one of the first Union victories in the war, at Mill Springs in Kentucky, and served in important subordinate commands at Perryville and Stones River. His stout defense at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863 saved the Union Army from being completely routed, earning him his most famous nickname, the Rock of Chickamauga. He followed soon after with a dramatic breakthrough on Missionary Ridge in the Battle of Chattanooga. In the Franklin–Nashville Campaign of 1864, he achieved one of the most decisive victories of the war, destroying the army of Confederate General John Bell Hood, his former student at West Point, at the Battle of Nashville.
Thomas had a successful record in the Civil War, but he failed to achieve the historical acclaim of some of his contemporaries, such as Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman. He developed a reputation as a slow, deliberate general who shunned self-promotion and who turned down advancements in position when he did not think they were justified. After the war, he did not write memoirs to advance his legacy. He also had an uncomfortable personal relationship with Grant, which served him poorly as Grant advanced in rank and eventually to the Presidency.

Conversion therapy is the pseudoscientific practice of trying to change an individual's sexual orientation from homosexual or bisexual to heterosexual using psychological or spiritual interventions. There is no reliable evidence that sexual orientation can be changed and medical bodies warn that conversion therapy practices are ineffective and potentially harmful. Medical, scientific, and government organizations in the United States and United Kingdom have expressed concern over the validity, efficacy and ethics of conversion therapy. Various jurisdictions in Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas have passed laws against conversion therapy.
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) opposes psychiatric treatment based upon the assumption that homosexuality per se is a mental disorder or based upon the a priori assumption that a patient should change his/her sexual homosexual orientation and describes attempts to change sexual orientation by practitioners as unethical. It also states that debates over the integration of gay and lesbian people have obscured science by calling into question the motives and even the character of individuals on both sides of the issue and that the advancement of conversion therapy may cause social harm by disseminating unscientific views about sexual orientation. United States Surgeon General David Satcher in 2001 issued a report stating that there is no valid scientific evidence that sexual orientation can be changed.The highest-profile advocates of conversion therapy today tend to be fundamentalist Christian groups and other organizations which use a religious justification for the therapy rather than speaking of homosexuality as a disease.
