Inside the Alchemist Brewery in Stowe VT
Episode # 28 - Heady Topper, The Alchemist Brewery and Co-Founder John Kimmich
Source:
Michael interviews the legendary John Kimmich, Co-Founder of The Alchemist Brewery in Stowe, VT to discuss the success of Heady Topper and give us insights on how he produces some of the most sought after beer in the WORLD.
The Alchemist is a family run brewery specializing in fresh, unfiltered IPA. John and Jen Kimmich originally opened The Alchemist as a 60 seat brew pub in the village of Waterbury in 2003. After eight years of success and growing popularity, they decided to open a small production brewery. Today The Alchemist currently operates two breweries in Vermont and handles all local distribution.
THE ALCHEMIST – WATERBURY
In early 2011 we built the Alchemist Cannery, a 15 barrel brewery and canning line, for the production of our flagship IPA Heady Topper. The first cans of Heady Topper rolled off the line just two days after Tropical Storm Irene demolished The Alchemist Pub and Brewery. Today, we move all of our beer weekly in a concerted effort to provide the freshest, hoppiest packaged IPA on the market. Heady Topper is brewed only in Waterbury, Vermont and is distributed within a 25 mile radius. Our Waterbury brewery is not open to the public. However, we distribute a portion of Heady Topper to our Stowe brewery and Visitor’s Center for retail sales and tasting. If you are not visiting our Stowe Visitor’s Center and would like to purchase Heady Topper elsewhere, please visit our WHERE TO BUY page to find a retailer close to you.
THE ALCHEMIST – STOWE
Opened in July 2016, this state of the art facility was designed to be as low impact as possible while providing us with enough space to serve our community and the growing number of beer tourists to Vermont. Our second year round beer, Focal Banger, is brewed in Stowe as well as seasonal beers that rotate throughout the year. The Alchemist Brewery and Visitor’s Center in Stowe provides samples of beer for tasting, retail beer sales, merchandise and a fun, educational experience.

Long Trail Brewing Co., Vermont
A visit to the Long Trail #microbrewery in Vermont on 16 July 2018.
The folks at Long Trail describe their history this way – “The first batch of Long Trail Ale® rolled off the line in 1989. Back then the brewery—known as the Mountain Brewers—was a modest brew house tucked into the basement of the Old Woolen Mill in Bridgewater Corners, with the goal to brew an affordable, American-made alternative to the pricey German and English exports that filled the shelves.”
“At the time, the craft brewing industry in America was on the rise and Vermont was better known for maple syrup than beer. In 1989, Long Trail Ale® hit the taps at local watering holes; blazing the trail for Vermont's craft brewing industry.”
On-Line sources add…
“Long Trail Brewing Company is a regional brewery in Bridgewater Corners, Vermont, United States. Founded in 1989 by Andy Pherson in the basement of the Bridgewater Woolen Mill, the company relocated to its current brewing facility and visitor center in 1995.”
“Originally known as Mountain Brewers, the company changed its name to Long Trail Brewing Company shortly after their relocation to Bridgewater Corners, Vermont.”
“In 2006, Long Trail was acquired by its present owner, Fulham and Co., a Massachusetts-based private equity firm.”
“Located on the banks of the Ottaquechee River in the heart of the Green Mountains, the Long Trail campus includes its brewing operations, visitor center, farmhouse pilot brewery and wastewater treatment facility.”

The 8-0--BREW - Switchback Brewing, Burlington VT
Today, we've made the trek up to Burlington, Vermont to visit one of the most popular and well known breweries in the state. Switchback Brewing, was founded in 2002 by Bill Cherry and his best friend, Jeff. Switchback is known for their great ale that can be found all over the state of Vermont and is probably in a local pub around you. Their beers, bottled or barreled, are all non filtered, giving their beer a unique and complex flavor. We had a chance to catch up with head brewer Jeff Tomaino and have him walk us through a batch of their switchback ale. We also meet up with owner, brew-master, and craft brew legend Bill Cherry to get the low down on the history of switchback and see what inspires him to keep brewing great Vermont craft brews. To round out our tour at switchback, we headed over to the switchback tasting room where Sara Diaz took us through a tasting of Switchbacks ale, Citra-Pils, and their Connector IPA along with some of their rotating specials. All of this and more on this episode of the eight oh brew!
