Alfama is probably Lisbon's most iconic and romantic neighborhood. So photogenic, beautiful small streets and squares. Tiny houses and amazing views because it's all set on a hill.
But very busy and almost unbearable if there is a giant cruise ship parked down at the port. Sadly the neighborhood is changing due to platforms like Airbnb. Locals move out, to make room for tourists!

Alfama walking tour in Lisbon
We are going to take you on an extended walk through the Alfama, the old section of Lisbon, capital of Portugal. Strolling through Alfama is one of your great experiences in coming to Lisbon so don't miss this opportunity. A great time to come is late in the afternoon, early evening when folks are out socializing, visiting, shopping. And it's generally a pedestrian zone – there are a few motor scooters and mopeds of course, but most of these lanes as you can see are quite narrow and cobbled and just ideal for strolling. LISBON: Alfama - oldest district (1/5) Portugal
Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon/Lisboa (Portugal), spreading on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tagus/Tejo river. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning hot fountains or baths. It contains many important historical attractions, as well as an abundance of Fado bars and restaurants.
Overlooking the Alfama is the medieval Castle of São Jorge, offering the best views of the city.
On the slopes of Alfama there are terraces/viewpoints ('miradouros') from which to see the city, like the Miradouro de Santa Luzia (near the church of the same name and over remnants of the Moorish city walls) and the Miradouro das Portas do Sol.
Near the Miradouro de Santa Luzia is located the Museum of Decorative Arts (Museu de Artes Decorativas), a 17th-century mansion with magnificent interiors.
Among the churches of the Alfama are Lisbon Cathedral (12th–14th century, oldest of the city), the Convento da Graça (18th century), the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora (late 16th–18th century), and the baroque Church of Santa Engrácia (17th century), now converted into the National Pantheon ('Panteão Nacional'). Here important Portuguese personalities are buried, like presidents of the republic and writers.

Lisbon old town: Magical Alfama to Belém travel guide ✈????
It’s one of the oldest cities in Europe and offers wonderful glimpses into Portugal’s layers of time and influence – come with us on an adventure through Lisbon old town and highlights from the city's rich, colourful past.
In our vlog, filmed at Christmastime, we share itinerary and tips on what to see and do in 'Lisbon old town' (Alfama, Castelo and Graça) including cobbled streets and amazing views from Castelo de São Jorge, Largo das Portas do Sol and Miradouro da Senhora do Monte.
Rossio and Baixa are very central areas, also filled with Lisbon old town charm. Take a look through Lisbon’s riverfront gateway sitting below Alfama, with bustling trams, Elevador de Santa Justa and the pretty Praça do Comércio to name just a few top things to take in.
Bairro Alto and Chiado are particularly good for dining and nightlife. These areas are within easy walking distance of Rossio and Praça do Comércio – all of this is close together and simple to explore on foot.
Belém is a little further along the waterfront and overlooks the Ponte 25 de Abril (bridge); with its pastries, and historical gems like Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower on the banks of Tagus River, and Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument of the Discoveries) celebrating travellers from the Portuguese Age of Discovery - Belém is not to be missed.

Come spend 24 hours in Lisbon with us! After London, Tom and I travel to Lisbon for the first time. We settle into a gorgeous, airy Airbnb in Alfama, right by St. George's Castle, which is one of our first stops. I highly recommend going to St. George's Castle right when you arrive to get the best views of Lisbon. Next, we visit the iconic, Arco da Rua Agusta in the Baxia neighborhood. From the arch, you can get more great views of the city center. For dinner, we enjoy the best burgers in Lisbon at To B. - To Burger or Not to Burger. YUM! Afterward, we have a night out at the bars in Lisbon's party neighborhood, Barrio Alto. It was so much fun!

Alfama is one of the oldest districts of Lisbon, and is a delightful maze of narrow cobbled streets and ancient houses, which lead up the steep hill from the Tejo Estuary to the castle. Contained within this diverse and charismatic district are many historic buildings including the Se Cathedral, the Castle, the National Pantheon and Saint Anthony’s Church.

About Alfama Lisbon: The steep streets of Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest areas, are lined with shops selling traditional crafts and cafes. Passengers pack the historic no. 28 tram, which winds through Alfama on its way up to 11th-century São Jorge Castle. Views from Miradouro da Graça terrace stretch over the city to the River Tagus. In the evening, melancholy Fado music can be heard in some of the area's long-running restaurants.
