Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument is a U.S. National Monument in the State of Texas. For thousands of years, people came to the red bluffs above the Canadian River for flint, vital to their existence. Demand for the high quality, rainbow-hued flint is reflected in the distribution of Alibates Flint through the Great Plains and beyond. Indians of the Ice Age Clovis Culture used Alibates flint for spear points to hunt the Imperial Mammoth before the Great Lakes were formed. The flint usually lies just below the surface at ridge level in a layer up to six feet thick. The quarry pits were not very large, between 5 and 25 feet wide and 4 to 7 feet deep. Many of these quarries were exploited by the Antelope Creek people, of the Panhandle culture, between 1200 and 1450. The stone-slabbed, multi-room houses built by the Antelope Creek people have long been of interest to the public and studied by archaeologists. Today this area is protected by the U.S. National Park Service and can only be viewed by ranger-led guided tours, which must be reserved in advance.
Alibates Flint Quarries was the only National Monument in the state of Texas until the Military Working Dog Teams National Monument was created in 2013, and is an integral part of Lake Meredith National Recreation Area.
The monument was authorized as Alibates Flint Quarries and Texas Panhandle Pueblo Culture National Monument on August 31, 1965, but the designation was shortened to the current name on November 10, 1978.

Shari G.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Free, free, and free!
This campground is located on an impressive peninsula sticking out into Lake Meredith and probably has the best location to view the sunset on the entire reservoir. The small campground has about a dozen sites, all first-come, first-served. None of these are good for RVs longer than 15 feet, but ours and our only other neighbor (in a van) fit just fine.
The bathrooms were very clean and are family-style, single use with toilet, sink and shower. The water was hot with good pressure. Did I mention this campground and showers are FREE?
The nearby boat launch is just down the hill, with a huge parking lot (our guess is that the lake gets BUSY in summer) offering some great fishing and water sport opportunities. There were a few hiking and mountain biking trails, though more seemed to be on the less developed, western shore of the lake.
The town of Fritch is less than 4 miles away with a few restaurants and a small grocery store and gas stations. Be sure to check the Alibates National Monument, just 10 miles south of town. A very cool, little known spot.

Vlog #19 Buffalo Lake NWR
This vlog describes our visit to Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Buffalo Lake is no longer a year-round lake and seems to only have some water in it part of the year. There was no water when we were there. It is also supposed to be a great place for birders as this NWR is located on a major migratory route. While we were there, there were some birds, but I think the lack of water deterred some birds from hanging around as in other years. Rain here has been scarce. As of this writing, this part of Texas has not seen any rain in almost 6 months.
