Mt Kinabalu up and down in One Day - Possible? Borneo Malaysia
Our mission was to use the ONE day we had to climb to the top of Mt. Kinabalu, 4095m 13,435ft. The actual gain on the trail is a little under 8000 feet as the trail starts part way up the mountain. The route is just under 9km each way. You MUST get a guide - or risk a steep fine. And you'll need to be patient and persistent if you hope to do this in one day - and prepared to pay for a full 2-day experience, too.

===About this video===
Lovely wife organized a short morning getaway to Dreamer's Island Resort Kota Kinabalu together with family friends on a Malaysia's labor's day 1st May 2019. We were to be transported from Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort jetty to the island which required a boat ride to the Island that takes approximately 20 minutes.
It is the first time I really made use of my Go Pro Hero 5 although I had it with me for quite some time. Did not realize how easy and convenient it was for me to produce an amateur travel trip video. Being that it was water resistant, light and compact, I was able to do most of the video capturing easily without a gimbal.
It made it fun and less hassle having to carry heavy equipment as I normally use my DSLR more for photography.
Nevertheless, I hope you all enjoy watching this video as much as me making it.

Malaysia - Sandakan Hotspot Eco Tours
Flying from Kota Kinabalu (KK) to Sandakan is easy, fast and inexpensive. This tour was very well organized by Mr Lai of Sandakan Hotspot Eco-Tours. Leaving from KK early morning on day 1, I was met as well as other tourists at Sandakan airport by Hadi, our professional and agreeable tour-guide. After a quick breakfast at a local cafe, we arrived at the Sepilok Orang-Utan Reahabilitation Center, one of only 4 such centers in the world. You get to see orang-utans coming at feeding time on their free will as they are free in nature. You also get to see the newly rescued orang-utans getting some training to be able to survive later in the wild. After a great visit there, we had a nice buffet lunch at a local restaurant and our comfortable A/C bus took us to the Gomantong Caves. We were very fortunate to visit during the 6 weeks a year when bird nests collectors are at work. It gave an extra interest to this huge cathedral-type of cave. Then, we drove to the Sungai Kinabatangan, Sabah's longest river. After checking-in at Borneo Natural Bilit Sukau Resort where I was quite surprised at how nice the bungalows were: I did not need the A/C as the cool temperature and fans where just right. Nice traditional style but clean and spacious. Rooms with personality! After a quick snack, we went for a late afternoon river cruise to spot many types of birds, proboscis monkeys, macaques, and perhaps crocodiles and pygmy elephants. You realize then that your eyes are much better than your camera at distinguishing the creatures often far away and in the shade! After this 2h1/2 hour trip we came back at the resort for a buffet dinner with the many other tourists (most backpackers-type) that came for a day tour or overnight like I did. Shortly after dinner, we were invited to join a night walk around the property to see some animals sleeping like insects and birds. After a great night of sleep, I got up early again, this time to go to a 6am river tour, giving us more chance to see the wild animals clinging to the jungle bordering the river with infamous palm oil trees fields beyond! I let you watch the video to see what animals we did see … After a breakfast on our river tour return, a big bus took a lot of us to diverse destinations, sometimes to connect with other buses. Back at Sandakan airport mid-day, I was back in KK by 4pm on day2. A busy but really fun 2-day tour!
I recommend and thank Mr Lai of Sandakan Hotspot Eco-Tours for his support and our great guide, Hadi. Filmed in August 2018.
Mount Kinabalu in Borneo
Mount Kinabalu is a prominent mountain on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It is located in the East Malaysian state of Sabah and is protected as Kinabalu National Park, a World Heritage Site. Kinabalu is the tallest peak in Borneo's Crocker Range and is the tallest mountain in the Malay Archipelago.
The mountain and its surroundings are among the most important biological sites in the world, with over 4500 species of plant, 326 species of birds, and 100 mammalian species identified. Among this rich collection of wildlife are famous species such as the gigantic Rafflesia plants and the orangutan.
The mountain is sacred to locals. They believe that spirits of their ancestors inhabit the top of the mountain. Previously, a chicken was sacrificed at the peak every time a climb was made but these days this ceremony only happens once a year when only seven chickens are needed to appease the spirits.
Mount Kinabalu is known to be one of the most accessible mountains in the world. No specialized mountain climbing skills are required to ascend it. The trail that most tourists use is described as a 'trek and scramble'. Locals begin climbing the mountain from the age of 3 and the oldest person to reach the peak was 80 years old. However, how much one enjoys the climb depends strongly on how fit you are and how well you acclimatise to the thin air at the higher levels.
Although it is possible to climb to the top and back in less than four hours, most climbers take two days, with an overnight break at Laban Rata. The final attack on the peak takes place in the early hours of the second day in order to catch the sunrise at the top. By mid-morning the mist begins to roll in, obscuring the breath-taking views.

Welcome to Kota Kinabalu, located in East Malaysia. Better known as “KK” to its many international visitors, this resort city—set in gorgeous tropical surroundings—has lots to offer. Its proximity to the South China Sea makes it a fantastic trip if you love fishing and scuba diving, and its blend of natural beauty, historical buildings, and modern construction have made it a growing tourist destination.
Kick off your Kota Kinabalu tour by exploring the downtown area. Just a half-mile from the waterfront is a tall piece of history: the Atkinson Clock Tower. Built in 1905, this tower stands 50 feet high and was at one time the only land-based point of reference for incoming ships. Today, it’s one of the major landmarks on any Kota Kinabalu sightseeing bucket list.
Kota Kinabalu is right on the South China Sea, so get ready to enjoy its warm, blue waters. Book a boat tour for scuba diving or snorkeling and get up close and personal with the local sea life. If you find the swimming critters irresistible, then stop by the Green Connection Aquarium once you’re back on dry land. That’s where you can really learn about the aquatic creatures that call the South China Sea home.
In the evening, head for the boardwalk that runs along the waterfront. This is the place to find all the food, drink, and merriment you could hope for. Explore the Filipino Night Market, a famous and fabulous group of vendors offering delicious food and souvenirs. From flowers, fruits, and vegetables to fresh-caught fish, pearls, and local crafts, this is the place to find dinner or the perfect gift for your friends back home.

Kara Sun birding in (presenting wildlife of) Sabah (Borneo) - Part 1 (Inubong,Mt. Kinabalu)
This was a great birding trip! My friend Alven had invited me since several years to visit him n go birding with him n finally i did this trip.I guess the most amazing part of this trip apart from the birds was his super funny smart boy Xavier, that did entertain us a lot.I am working on more episods now.Sabah is a great country to travel for wildlife, even though more than half of its forests are already lost to mainly palm oil plantations...but if eco touorismn brings them a good income...there is still hope...in fact elss fires are burning in sabah now compared to kalimantan.this film is mainly 4k,the bad looking recordings unfortunatelly still taken with my canon powershot, but had to take in these scenes as wellmas otherwise some connecting parts were missing.
I have used music from lots of great artists,to name 2 in particiular, which is Jan Morgenstern,a very talented german film music producer,my intros of these sabah films start with one of his tracks, you can find more info about him here:
and the great trance track i used from my friend Sebaastian Spang called Six Senses - Amlia. you might find it rather unsual for me to have chosen this music to include it in this documentary, but it gives me a special feeling and as i am doing music videos as well,in which nature occurs..i thought i jsut give it a short try the other way around ;-). other music used is produced by these artists: scott holmes, dexter brian, damiano baldoni, audiobinger, moonplaisir, rocco ganata, stephan siebert, etasonic.all produce great film music as well!
Thanks for alven, chang and xavier for filming me or making interviews with me and hosting me in their houses and alven making this great trip possible n skipping all his work for our 12 travel days.
i recentlly found out that subtitles are given to my video, unfortunatelly they only nearly match with my spoken narration,so sorry for that guys.
