Fishing On Parris Island South Carolina
The crew and i head out to Parris Island to do some salt water fishing!
What is Parris Island you ask?
Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island (often abbreviated as MCRD PI) is an 8,095 acres (32.76 km2) military installation located within Port Royal, South Carolina, approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) south of Beaufort, the community that is typically associated with the installation. MCRD Parris Island is used for the training of enlisted Marines. Male recruits living east of the Mississippi River and female recruits from all over the United States report here to receive their initial training. Male recruits living west of the Mississippi River receive their training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California, but may train at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island by special request.
A French Huguenot expedition, led by Jean Ribault in 1562, was the first European group to attempt to colonize Parris Island. Earlier Spanish expeditions had sighted the area, and named it Punta de Santa Elena, which now remains one of the oldest continuously used European place names in the United States. The French expedition built an outpost named Charlesfort, and Ribault left a small garrison as he returned to France for colonists and supplies. After a long absence, due to Ribault's delay from wars in Europe, Charlesfort was abandoned after the garrison mutinied, built a ship on the island, and sailed back to France in April 1563. In 1566 the Spanish, led by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés founded a settlement named Santa Elena which became the capital of La Florida for the next decade. Spain finally abandoned Santa Elena in 1587. England took control of the region by the 17th century, and Parris Island became home to British plantations after being purchased by Colonel Alexander Parris, treasurer of the South Carolina colony, in 1715. From the 1720s to the Civil War, the island was divided into a number of plantations, initially growing indigo, then later cotton. During and after the Civil War, the island became home to freed slaves, and was a site of freedmen schools taught by abolitionists such as Frances Gage and Clara Barton.
Union forces captured Port Royal Sound in 1861, and Parris Island became a coaling station for the Navy. This function was taken up again after the war, thanks in large part to the former slave turned Congressman Robert Smalls, who fought for the creation of a new federal military installation on the island.
Marines were first stationed on Parris Island in 1891, in the form of a small security detachment headed by First Sergeant Richard Donovan. His unit was attached to the Naval Station, Port Royal, the forerunner of Parris Island. Donovan's unit was highly commended for preserving life and property during hurricanes and tidal waves that swept over the island in 1891 and 1893.
Military buildings and homes constructed between 1891 and World War I form the nucleus of the Parris Island Historic District. At the district center are the commanding general's home, a 19th-century wooden dry dock and a start of the 20th century gazebo—all of which are on the National Register of Historic Places.[3]
On November 1, 1915, Parris Island was officially designated a Marine Corps Recruit Depot and training was continued from then on.

General Aviation Daily Air Show at Georgetown, SC.m4v
Not just people in Georgetown County, but few in the world understand what general aviation (GA) consists of and what it means as an economic force, according to Pawleys Island Pilot Randy Hollister.
The Georgetown County Airport, strategically located half way between New York and Miami in the Highway 17 corridor between Charleston and Myrtle Beach, is evolving into a busy and vital gateway to and from other parts of the United States and the world, welcoming tourists and travelers, including businessmen seeking to relocate to the Palmetto State, Hollister said.
The US has 20,000 public and private airports, but only 565 have airline service, Hollister said. The rest serve general aviation, which is all flying that is neither commercial passenger airlines nor military. GA planes are used for business commuting, pipeline patrol, life flights, mosquito control, flight training, and environmental monitoring. Locally, SC DHEC aircraft can be seen watching turtle nesting season. The thousands of general aviation airports in communities large and small across the country serve about a quarter million airplanes.
Hollister said he sees more business-type aircraft at the Georgetown Airport. I am more often there during weekdays than on weekends, he said. In addition to the flights coming to Georgetown in support of local business enterprises, or bringing seasonal residents to their homes along the Hammock Coast, many pilots stop in Georgetown on the way up and down the Atlantic seaboard because it is a convenient refueling stop, servicing both piston engine aircraft and private or corporate jets. We have such beautiful facilities for them.
The whole experience at Georgetown Airport the last two years has been a good one for Hollister. I've had great pleasure flying out of airport, he said. They are fine people to deal with and the facilities are well maintained. He said his wife, Debbie Hollister, loves to fly, especially in their high-wing light-sport aircraft. This new concept of light sport started six years ago in 2004, he said. Light sport required no medical certificate. My plane goes about 135 miles per hour, and the operating cost is comparable to a car for trips.
Hollister said he and his wife like to fly for fun and see their son in Indianapolis--3.5 hours away or go to Clemson and take their other son to lunch. He gave the example of the Experimental Aircraft Association chapter taking 20 planes for a fly in to Triple Tree Airport in Greenville. They might video tape landings and award pilots for the worst landings, he said. If you're looking for a different place to eat, then be sure to try Food Scapes located at the Lake City Airport.
Charlotte Pilot Michael J. Pobiega of the South Carolina Breakfast Club said every other Sunday since 1938, pilots and aviation enthusiasts in and near South Carolina meet for breakfast. No dues and no meeting requirements, he said. Breakfast is around $6 a plate, is ready about 9 a.m. and there is always plenty. He tells interested people to fly in or drive to the airport.
Usage figures are up 6 per cent this year compared to 2009, and the month of June had a 13 per cent upsurge over a year ago. Barry Brock of Seven Rivers Aviation, LLC, heads the Fixed Base Operator (FBO) company, which provides operational and maintenance services to the county airport. We're growing back now with tourism and industry, such as the new gypsum plant.
Brock said maintenance activities have stayed level since the economic downturn with a steady flow of aircraft getting main airframe and engine maintenance and repair. The airport opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m. in the summer and about 5:30 p.m. in the winter or at least 20 minutes past sunset.
Rick Westfall, the airport manager, said local airport personnel go all out to meet the needs in-coming passengers and pilots, even providing free sodas, coffee and stacks. Pilots have free use of automobiles, and a Hertz Car Rental office is available to handle transportation needs of passengers and others, Westfall said.
Westfall said various emergency services utilize the field, including the US Coast Guard, such as during off-shore searches for missing boats, and various air ambulance and life flights to Cleveland Clinic, Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital, New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC, or the Medical University of South Carolina center in Charleston. Georgetown County Mosquito Control is located at the airport and does its flights from the field.
Most people who use our airport live here or own a second home here, or they're looking to build and relocate here, Westfall said. Whether they live in the Upstate or a couple of states away, they can fly to our airport in their own aircraft or by charter almost any weekend they choose.

SUPER FAST US Navy HSV 2 Swift Catamaran
The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. It is larger than the next 13 largest navies combined in terms of battle fleet tonnage, according to one estimate.[5][6] The U.S. Navy also has the world's largest carrier fleet, with 10 in service, one under construction (two planned), and two in reserve. The service has 317,054 personnel on active duty and 109,671 in the Navy Reserve. It operates 283 ships in active service and more than 3,700 aircraft.[3]
HSV-2 Swift is a non-commissioned, hybrid catamaran originally leased by the United States Navy as a mine countermeasures and sea basing test platform. She is now privately owned and operated by Sealift Inc. and chartered to the United States Navy Military Sealift Command. She is primarily used for fleet support and humanitarian partnership missions. The HSV stands for High Speed Vessel, and its home port is Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Norfolk, Virginia. The vessel has two CONMAR crews that typically rotate every three months to keep the ship deployed eleven months per year. The minimum crew size is 35; 18 are military with the balance civilian, provided through American Maritime Officers and Seafarers International Union. On rare occasion that she is in a United States port, it is usually Naval Station Mayport, Florida, supporting the Fourth Fleet or Charleston, South Carolina, for major maintenance. Rota, Spain, is considered by the crew to be the Mediterranean home away from home.[1]
The ship was constructed by the Australian shipbuilder Incat in Hobart, Tasmania, and was leased to the U.S. Navy through Bollinger/Incat of Lockport, Louisiana. She was the second catamaran the Navy leased to test new technologies and concepts associated with the Chief of Naval Operations's Seapower 21 plan. The contract value for the first year was $21.7 million.
Swift is the fourth Incat-built high-speed wave piercing catamaran to enter military service, following behind HMAS Jervis Bay, U.S. Army Vessel (USAV) Theater Support Vessel Spearhead (TSV-X1) and HSV-X1 Joint Venture.
It is a wave-piercing, aluminum-hulled, commercial catamaran with military enhancements, such as a helicopter flight deck, strengthened vehicle deck, small boat and unmanned vehicle launch and recovery capability, and an enhanced communications suite. It features a new, modular design, which will allow the ship to be refitted to support any mission without requiring long shipyard periods. While from the front the vessels appear to look like a trimaran, the centre hull does not rest in the water and is not used for buoyancy. As a logistics vessel, it does not have water-tight compartments or weapons systems. Its propulsion is provided by directional water jets, so it doesn't have propellers or a rudder for steering and can maneuver in twelve feet of water.[1]
The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, located in Arlington County, Virginia. As a symbol of the U.S. military, the Pentagon is often used metonymically to refer to the U.S. Department of Defense rather than the building itself.
Designed by American architect George Bergstrom (1876--1955), and built by general contractor John McShain of Philadelphia, the building was dedicated on January 15, 1943, after ground was broken for construction on September 11, 1941. General Brehon Somervell provided the major motive power behind the project;[4] Colonel Leslie Groves was responsible for overseeing the project for the U.S. Army.
The Pentagon is a large office building, with about 6,500,000 sq ft (600,000 m2), of which 3,700,000 sq ft (340,000 m2) are used as offices.[5][6] Approximately 28,000 military and civilian employees[6] and about 3,000 non-defense support personnel work in the Pentagon. It has five sides, five floors above ground, two basement levels, and five ring corridors per floor with a total of 17.5 mi (28.2 km)[6] of corridors. The Pentagon includes a five-acre (20,000 m2) central plaza, which is shaped like a pentagon and informally known as ground zero, a nickname originating during the Cold War and based on the presumption that the Soviet Union would target one or more nuclear missiles at this central location in the outbreak of a nuclear war.[7]
The United States of America (USA), commonly referred to as the United States (U.S.), America, or simply the States, is a federal republic[10][11] consisting of 50 states, 16 territories, and a federal district. The 48 contiguous states and the federal district of Washington, D.C., are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is the northwestern part of North America and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific.

Cooper River Diving for Megalodon Teeth
For those that wonder what it is like looking for shark teeth underwater, here's a little video. These are all teeth I found in 2 dives, including some pretty decent megalodon teeth. For those that are ready to give it a try, keep in mind, I scared an alligator out of my dive spot when I threw the anchor in.

Fishing Vessel hits large Sailing Vessel in Good Visibility 20/8/2010
Here is the press release from this incident.
At a hearing 30/05/2011 at Southampton Magistrates the Officer of the Watch of a fishing vessel pleaded guilty to one safety charge brought under Section 58 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995. He was fined £1,700 plus costs of £6,435.
On the 20th August 2010 the Andrea had finished fishing and was returning to port in the Netherlands. The skipper and rest of the crew were below leaving Jan Baarssen alone on the bridge in sole charge of the vessel. The Andrea is a 36.5 metre beam trawler registered in the UK but is based in the Netherlands
The Alexander von Humboldt was returning to Germany after a training voyage with a crew of fifty nine (59) consisting of thirty three (33) trainees and twenty six (26) full time crew. She is a large three masted sail training vessel registered in Germany.
The visibility on the day was good (10 Km +), wind was southerly force 5-6 with weather being grey and overcast.
During the afternoon of the 20th August 2011 the Alexander von Humboldt detected the Andrea on a steady bearing on its port side. The Andrea was not fishing and was the give way vessel. The Alexander von Humboldt started sounding its whistle. The Andrea failed to give way. The Alexander von Humboldt also tried to contact the Andrea by VHF radio but had no response. The Andrea claims to have gone hard to starboard and when within 15-20 metres of the Alex von Humboldt, the Andrea was seen to go full astern. The Andrea struck the port quarter of the Alexander von Humboldt. It was a fairly low speed collision.
Apart from some scratched paintwork, the Andrea was undamaged.
The Alexander von Humboldt was lucky to suffer only some dented shell plating with associated damage to internal wooden bulkheads and deck planking together with bent or buckled handrails. It was very fortunate that no harm came to the crew of the Alexander von Humboldt and that its rigging and watertight integrity remained intact.
Mr Jan Baarssen, 51, of Urk, Netherlands pleaded guilty for conduct endangering ships or persons. He was finerd£1,700 plus costs of £6,435
In passing sentence the Magistrates stated that it was fortunate that they were no injuries especially among the sail training crew.
Mr David Fuller O.B.E., Principal Fishing Vessel Surveyor for the Eastern Region of the MCA stated:This is yet another incident occurring on the return of a fishing vessel to harbour. Fishermen are reminded of the requirement to keep a good lookout at all times. Also that that the trip is not over until the vessel is safely tied up in port.
We would like to thank the German and Netherlands Police for their assistance in this matter
