Lenin - The reimagining of a Russian revolutionary

The former Communist dictator and revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin was the architect of the Soviet Union.
Now an exhibition in Russia shows how local artists are grappling with his legacy of political repression and mass killings.

STORY-LINE:
In Russia there are few faces better known than that of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov - or Lenin.
But for all that familiarity, few Russians have seen Lenin like this.
Here at this exhibition in Yekaterinburg, Lenin's face - once depicted throughout the former Soviet Union as part of a cult of personality - is being re-imagined.
There's Lenin as Pharaoh, Lenin as the French Sun King, and even Lenin as a craggy-faced part of the landscape.
In this work, the former Marxist revolutionary is re-imagined as Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator.
Sergey Martynaov of Yekaterinburg's Antimuseum of Computers and Games explains the how the image came about:
Our Lenin is a cyber-Lenin, he says.
The idea is about combining history and technology. Lenin is still not buried - he is in a mausoleum. So we explored ideas of eternal life and biotechnology in our work by representing Lenin as a cyber-machine, a kind of Terminator, one who's still alive and will stay alive.
For this exhibition, which is being shown at the Museum of Soviet Life in Yekaterinburg, a city of 1.5 million people east of the Urals, artists were given free rein.
They were invited to explore Lenin's legacy from many perspectives.
The final products are an invitation to locals to reflect.
Such personalities as Vladimir Ilyich, who changed the course of history, they have very strong energy. Such personalities will not be forgotten, and will attract attention for many many years, says Martynaov.
In her work, artist Irina Podkorytova reflects on the Soviet cult of personality that sprung up during Lenin's life and endured well after his death.
With this bust, she draws a comparison with the myths surrounding the French Sun King, Louis XIV.
The bust stands aside two small bottles of French perfume.
He is a dictator who tore Russia apart, millions and millions of people were killed, millions left their motherland, and all his French perfumes in the form of (nice stories about) Lenin in Gorki, Lenin with children, Lenin with peasants, that will not be able to drown out that bad smell from his deeds. He is a dictator, this is our history, that's how it is, Podkorytova says.
Here in his workshop, Yekaterinburg artist Ivan Mikheev is tackling the subject using a new medium for him.
Mikheev's signature style is post-apocalyptic, or gothic.
But in this work, he depicts the former Soviet leader as a craggy rock face - a part of the landscape of Russia's 20th century history.
Lenin here is a part of history, and in this case, in this work as part of nature already, in which we live taking it for granted, not even thinking this is that very man who laid a powerful foundation for our lives, he explains.
Artist Anastasia Postnikova focuses on how traces of the former Soviet Union that Lenin helped to build are still felt today.
Her Lenin bust sits behind barbed wire.
She is using the work to make a comment on her childhood, spent in a closed city in Russia's Sverdlovsk region, 70 kilometres north of Yekaterinburg.
For some of the other 12 artists who've made contributions, the preoccupation is how much things have changed since Lenin's time.
Marina Kozlachkova is using Lenin's bust as a canvas to paint in her favourite colours - green and orange.

July 2014 is getting more and more intense for the Russian label Intricate Cuts with all those newest releases scheduled, including the extended play by Vndy Vndy with three tracks, All Day, All Night and Vacancy. Behind that hard-to-pronounce alias Vndy Vndy is Andrey Popov from the city of Yekaterinburg. To date his works have yet seen the light of day only on small labels like Yellow Light Music and Brisk Records. Finally, this producer from Ural region gets his residential registration at one of Russia's most rapidly developing imprints, Intricate Cuts. Every track from the extended play by Vndy Vndy has an own face, there is summer mood and freshness in the air. It is not a mistake to say that All Day sounds like influenced by Eric Prydz himself while Vacancy has a brisk and kicky rhythm (as if you were listening to something made by Fatboy Slim) and cheerful vocal samples, it's a 5 minutes journey into the easy-going era of illegal rave parties. The story behind All Night is far more dramatic. This track not only made it into the tracklist of Intricate Records Is Going To Ibiza 2014 compilation, but also gained attention of Judge Jules himself and was played in his radio show Global Warmup prior to release date, at the moment it looks like All Night is the strongest one on the forthcoming extended play.

Cosplayers, comic and animation fans gather for U:CON festival

Cosplayers, video game and comic book enthusiasts have been gathering in Russia's third largest city to celebrate their love of fandom culture.
STORYLINE:
Transformers, super heroes, elves, monsters and lolitas have all gathered in this hall in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg.
They've travelled from across the country to show off their self-made costumes, perform and take a look at the latest trends in cosplay, comics, science fiction and video games at the two-day U:CON convention.
The event is the first of its kind in the Ural region, straddling the border between Europe and Asia.
For the first time we organised here, at cinema platform U:Kino, the educational project Laser Head. We brought here over 45 comics authors from around the country and produced our compilation (of comics), set up a video games zone, we had a cosplay show, master classes, video bloggers, things that probably do interact with each other in normal life, but rarely meet all together at the same time, says one of the convention organisers Dyukha Tverdov.
On the festival's main stage, more than 200 cosplayers from around the country are taking part in a cosplay competition.
One of the key tasks is to covey the nature of their character as close as possible to the original.
A jury panel carefully considers all aspects of their presentation and marks them on their performance and the quality of their costumes.
One of the judges, Marina Sevelova, says the most successful cosplayers are the ones who make you want to find more about their character's origins.
Our task is to understand how much the person was involved into the creation of the costume. We also look at how he or she acted it, because it is necessary to show the character from the stage so that people see what character this is. The best outcome is when you see it, you think that you want to play this (game), you want to see this (movie).
Apart from acting on the stage, participants have to demonstrate their crafts skills, explaining in detail how they made their costumes.
The ones who create their own costumes from scratch get extra points.
Materials used vary from textiles and artificial hair to polymer materials, plastic, wood and jewellery resin.
Cosplayers spend anything between one month to a year making the outfits.
Anna Kotova explains that her personal passion is the process of making the costume itself.
I like to make them (the costumes), very much, I just like sitting and working on every single detail very meticulously. To perform on the stage is also nice to a certain extent, but I like making it.
During the convention the guests have a chance to learn about new products in related fields.
Thanks to such events, people who come to play computer games, or cosplay, get engaged into comics, those who come to read comics, get engaged into cosplay, or computer games, so it's all interconnected, the geek culture, says comic book author Yevgeny Yakovlev.
More than 45 novice authors and experienced artists presented their works at the authors' alley this year - including comics, graphic novels, text books and illustrations.
Director of publishing house 'Komilfo', Mikhail Bogdanov, thinks it's now harder than ever to break into the comic book market.
Alongside world-famous comic book series like Spiderman and Deadpool, the work of local artists is also on display at U:CON.
In the gaming area, computer game developers present their products and receive immediate feedback on their games.
