St. Augustine (Florida) - In Another Minute (Week 248)
--- ---
St. Augustine in Northeast Florida is considered the nation's oldest city, having been established in 1565 by Spanish settlers. In September 2015, the celebrations of St. Augustine's 450th anniversary will start in earnest. But I believe this historic town on the Atlantic Ocean is always worth a visit. And I'm not just saying that because Scott's family lives there.
There are so many attractions, like the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument (the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States ), the Bridge of Lions, Flagler College, the St. Augustine lighthouse, the oldest wooden school house, all the old churches and hotels and always crowded St. George Street with its shops and cafes. There are quite a few attractions that us locals usually avoid, like the Fountain of Youth (moved several times, as I hear), Ripley's Believe it or Not! Museum and the Alligator Farm (although I've been and thought it was quite cool) and all the tourist trolleys and ghost tours. My personal favorite attractions are the beaches, like Vilano Beach and the beaches of Anastasia State Park, the Matanzas River and its wetlands.
This week, Scott and I spend a few days visiting his family in St. Augustine (and some of our oldest friends in Gainesville, where I didn't have enough time to shoot a video, unfortunately). Whiskey finally got to experience the ocean for the first time, and we spent an afternoon running around with Scott's mom, Ellie Snapp, and his dad, Billy Solary, to capture a few shots of this lovely town to share with you in this video. Because there wasn't that much time, I didn't get to film everything and I had to shoot handheld (like in the early days of this video series). So I ended up swapping some filmed shots with still photos in the edit. I'm sure, I'll be back to film some of the missed attractions another time...

The featured song is Sunburn by Jason Matherne of Goonygoogoo Productions ( It was wonderful visiting with him in Gainesville this week. I definitely want to film a In A Minute Portrait video with him next time I'm in town for a bit longer.

Santa Fe River Springs, Florida - (HD)
About 2 hours west of St. Augustine, you'll find one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the southern United States - the fresh water springs of the Santa Fe River. We got there by renting a canoe at Santa Fe Canoe Outpost and paddling down river.
As can always be the case in Florida, we ran in to a sudden change in weather. Thunder, lightning, and a downpour of rain chased us to the swampy banks to find shelter under some trees!
The fact that it's only a 1 in 5 chance to see an alligator on this stretch of the river was cold comfort....I mean, the odds were less than that we'd get caught in the rain!
Thankfully, our son was up to the challenge as he set about setting up the comforts of home (like a place to go to the bathroom!)...

St Augustine, Florida USA - Exploring America's Oldest City
Exploring the beautiful city St Augustine in Florida, USA.
St Augustine was founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers which makes it the oldest continuously inhabited settlement of continental United States.
St Augustine is easy to get to from Orlando and even though it’s only two hours away the relaxed atmosphere and its rich history is a million miles away from crowds and queues of the theme parks.
During our stay in St Augustine we stayed at the pretty water front Bayfront Marin House Inn which overlooks Matanzas Bay in the historic centre and is within easy walking distance of the city’s historic sites, museums, art galleries and restaurants.
Take the Red Train Trolley to get to know the layout of the historic city centre. You must visit the Castillo de San Marcos, the first masonry fort in the Americas, the Fountain of Youth, Flagler College (formerly Hotel Flagler's Ponce de Leon Hotel) and the St Augustine Lighthouse.
Here is the list of all the exciting places we visited in St Augustine on Florida’s Historic Coast

St Augustine FL and Gold Head Branch State Park | Changing Lanes!
We have been to St. Augustine many times, but only for weekend getaways. And always in a hotel. This was the first time that we brought our home with us and it was a totally different experience. We didn’t have many options for parking out big rig, especially since it was last-minute and winter in Florida.

Re-enactment of cannon firing at Castillo de San Marcos St Augustine
Day 1 in the nation’s oldest city—St. Augustine, FL. This is truly a hidden gem in the state of Florida and I love to travel to this place. I have been here many times and will always come back. Today we visited Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States built by the Spaniards. The re-enactment you are about to see depicts how Spanish soldiers would fire a cannon. Sure that they move pretty slowly, but it is precisely this organized drill that make the cannon so formidable. The soldiers would carry out the procedures precisely and volleys of cannons firing at different directions certainly would be a tremendous sight to see. Imagine going back to the seventeenth century…

Our Visit To St Augustine, FL and the Ponce De Leon Fountain of Youth
Join Tyler and Jill Sheff as we take the Cashflow Roadshow to St Augustine, Florida which is also the oldest city in America. Anytime we travel to a destination that has an Old Town Trolley we are sure to take a tour in order to learn the lay of the land and the background history of the area. The Trolley tour never disappoints as we have the opportunity to learn lots of historical facts that most folks don't know.
Henry Flagler played a massive role in building the infrastructure that is modern-day St Augustine which includes beautiful homes, hotels, landmarks, and other structures. Henry Flagler was also the owner of the Flagler Railroad that connected Key West with North America by rail. Flagler College is home to a set of authentic Tiffany stained glass windows that are insured for millions of dollars. The city, founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers, it is the oldest continuously-inhabited European-established settlement within the borders of the continental United States. It is the second oldest city in United States territory after San Juan, Puerto Rico (founded in 1521).
