Blairgowrie and Rattray is a twin burgh in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. Locals refer to the town as Blair. Blairgowrie is the larger of the two former burghs which were united by an Act of Parliament in 1928 and lies on the southwest side of the River Ericht while Rattray is on the northeast side.
The area around Blairgowrie has been occupied continuously since the Neolithic, as evidenced from the Cleaven Dyke, a cursus monument 2 miles SSW of the town, as well as a Neolithic long mortuary enclosure 4 miles WSW at Inchtuthil. Several stone circles of this age can also be found in the area, notably the circle bisected by the road at Leys of Marlee, 1 mile to the west of Blairgowrie.
Blairgowrie had a busy livestock market at the bottom of the Boat Brae but this closed in the 1960s and is now the site of the Ashgrove Court sheltered housing complex. Blairgowrie has a thriving town centre with a wide range of independent shops, restaurants and pubs. National retailers include Tesco, Sainsbury, Co-op, M&Co and The Original Factory Shop. The Angus Hotel and Royal Hotel cater for local customers, tourists and a large number of bus parties who find the town an ideal touring base.
Stagecoach provide all the bus services to and from Blairgowrie with routes to Perth, Dundee, Alyth, Coupar Angus, Dunkeld, Aberfeldy, Kirkmichael and Glenshee as well as a circular town service. The nearest railway stations are Perth and Dunkeld and Birnam and the nearest airport is Dundee. Services to Perth and Dundee are frequent. The bus station is located in the Wellmeadow.
Blairgowrie Highland Games are held annually on the first Sunday of September in Bogles Field on Essendy Road. It is noted for its Hill Race and its mass tug o'war where as many contestants as possible from Blairgowrie and Rattray compete against each other. When Blairgowrie Games restarted in the 1980s Braemar Games had moved to the first Saturday in September and the following day seemed an appropriate date for Blair Games.

Dolly (5 July 1996 -- 14 February 2003) was a female domestic sheep, and the first mammal to be cloned from an adult somatic cell, using the process of nuclear transfer. Dolly was cloned by Ian Wilmut, Keith Campbell and colleagues at the Roslin Institute and the biotechnology company PPL Therapeutics near Edinburgh in Scotland. The funding for Dolly's cloning was provided by PPL Therapeutics and the Ministry of Agriculture. Dolly was born on 5 July 1996 and she lived until the age of six, at which point she died from a progressive lung disease. She has been called the world's most famous sheep by sources including BBC News and Scientific American. The cell used as the donor for the cloning of Dolly was taken from a mammary gland, and the production of a healthy clone therefore proved that a cell taken from a specific part of the body could recreate a whole individual. On Dolly's name, Wilmut stated Dolly is derived from a mammary gland cell and we couldn't think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton's.
Dolly lived for her entire life at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh. There she was bred with a Welsh Mountain ram and produced six lambs in total.

All surface features are intact with some flaking of the green paint. A metal dome on the ventilation shaft indicates this was a master post. The hatch is open. Internally this was the best preserved post in SE England (excluding Knockholt which has been restored). With the exception of the instruments, battery, generator and siren virtually everything was still in place including folding table, cupboard, shelf, chairs, metal clothes lockers with ROC uniforms hanging on the front, more uniforms inside, posters, ROC magazines, tool board, splint, maps, all telecommunications equipment, wiring, post log and a mass of other papers. As this open post was in a very vulnerable position on a main road near a sports-field I returned the next day with Victor Smith and the monitoring room was stripped, everything going to the Gravesend bunker museum. For many years the post remained open but after recent road widening the hatch is now welded shut.

Dronley station was on the divergence line from Dundee To Newtyle via Auchterhouse. The original line, opened in 1831 with three inclines using stationary steam engines to raise and lower trains.
Another feature of the old railway was a 300 yard tunnel through the Law (Hill) above Dundee.
Much of the newer track bed is now a public walk way, while parts of the incline railway are still visible, inspite of having all closed by the mid 1860's.
The new line from Ninewells Junction to Alyth Junction closed to passengers in 1955 but remained for freight up to 1966/7.

The castle was built in 1631, although its origins are believed to go back a further three hundred years. It originally served as the seat of the Earls of Kinnoull, and stood within a walled enclosure containing subsidiary buildings, orchards etc., on a terrace overlooking the North Inch. After falling into neglect in the early 19th century, the Castle was restored, in fact, virtually rebuilt, and extensively remodelled on a larger scale between 1862 and 1864 in the Baronial style by the architect David Smart. No original features survive except for parts of the original rubble walls on the east side. David Smart was born in Alyth in 1824. It is not known where he was first apprenticed but for many years he worked in the office of David Bryce. Smart's early Scots baronial and Italian Renaissance work is indistinguishable from Bryce's. By the late 1870s his public and commercial buildings had become Victorian late classic with French roofs. His son John had been articled to his father in 1888 and had subsequent experience with Kinnear and Peddie in Edinburgh in 1892, with McLuckie and Walker in Stirling in 1893 and with Thomas Martin Cappon in Dundee in 1894. David retained the existing office at 42 Tay Street, Perth and James opened his own office at 28 York Place in the same town with his son as chief assistant. David Smart retired in or about 1911 at the age of 86 and died on 13 October 1914 at the age of ninety. He was then living at Rockbank, Kinnoull, and left a widow, Margaret Morrison, and three daughters.
