Hidden Island: Amami Island, Japan
After hearing so much good things about Amami Island (Kagoshima), we finally visited this gorgeous island via a domestic flight from Osaka airport (Vanilla Air).
We returned to SG not long ago, but I NEED to be back on Amami Island again.
I can't even describe how chill and gorgeous the place is.
Cobalt blue waters, fresh air, very very friendly locals, deliciously fresh vegetables, no haste, no stress.. heck, even their gelato is the best gelato I've ever tasted.

Amami no Sato is a complex for appreciating Amami Islands’ nature and culture. You can visit the gallery of Oshima Tsumugi fabrics. In the factory you will see the production processes of the delicate and elaborate Oshima Tsumugi Silk Limono Materials. Oshima Tsumugi Silk is one of the most admired and loved Kimono Materials. At the last part of the tour in The factory, there’s an activity which is Kumihimo Making. Kumihimo (組み紐) is a Japanese form of braid-making. Cords and ribbons are made by interlacing strands. Kumi himo is Japanese for gathered threads.【TRIVIA Japanese Kumihimo braids: Do you know the movie called 'Your Name' that became the 2nd place on the all-time list in Japanese cinema history? The Kumihimo braids play an important role in the movie. The two main characters wear the braids as a bracelet and a hair ornament. It became more popular after the release of the movie. ????
You can choose four colors each for your braid. Under the guidance of the cheerful staff, you will start braiding with a lot of fun. ????
There’s a piece of paper, you write your wish then they scroll it like a tiny thin strand and put in the center of your braid craft. Now your own one-of-a-kind amulet is done! May all of your wishes come true. ????????

The amazing Anna Sato performing traditional Amami Oshima Shimauta
Guests at the Blossom Blast VIP party on Wednesday 1 March 2017 were treated to an amazing concert by Anna Sato at UltraSuperNew in Harajuku.
Anna is from Amami Oshima. Amami Oshima is the largest island in the Amami archipelago, located beween Okinawa and Kyushu. Anna started learning Amami Shimauta (island songs) from her grandfather when she was three years old. The singing was haunting – Anna uses a falsetto that is unique to the island’s original folk songs, sometimes referred to as ‘the voice of escape.’ At Blossom Blast she used a traditional drum for her first song, and then sanshin for her second.

The Amami Islands are subtropical. Blanketed in dense forests and surrounded by emerald waters, they are located about 400 kilometers from Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Kyushu. These islands, isolated from the continent long ago by tectonic activity, are full of rare indigenous flora and fauna. But the animals and plants are not the only thing that the forests of Amami have nurtured. They have also shaped a distinctive culture there. One example is the Amami folk song, called Shima-uta.
In this edition of Journeys in Japan, Naotomo Umewaka explores the mystical forests of Amami, as well as the music and spirit of the people on the islands.

Japan Senses focus on Southern Kyushu,with powerful climate and grandmagnificent nature. We propose Oshima Tsumugi, which has a history of 1300 and known as one of the three greatest fabrics of the world. This time, two regions Amami Oshima and Kagoshima cooperate with each other,and offer new values and possibilities.
Oshima Tsumugi will be presented at the “JAPAN SENSES, the Oshima Tsumugi STORY connecting to the future”, held at the ISETAN Shinjuku store. From collaboration pieces with “theSakaki” and “Sasquatchfabrix,” to art pieces by Ms. Reiko Sudo, the fabric designer / design director of “NUNO”, and Mr. Kounosuke Hattori of , you will be able to see many pieces that will introduce you to new attractions of the Amami Oshima Tsumugi.

今回のジャパンセンシィスは南国の力強い気候と雄大な自然にはぐくまれた九州をフォーカス。1300年の歴史を持ち世界三大織物の一つといわれる大島紬を奄美大島・鹿児島2つの産地と連携し、その歴史と共に新たな価値・可能性を提案します。
theSakaki（ザサカキ）や Sasquatchfabrix.（サスクワッチファブリックス）など、ファッションブランドとのコラボレート作品から、テキスタイルデザイナー／NUNOデザインディレクター 須藤玲子さんや＜クチュリエ＞の服部幸之助さんによるアートピースまで、奄美大島紬の新たな魅了を感じられる作品を多数ご覧いただけます。

“Authentic Amami Oshima Tsumugi (Pongee)”
A spiritual textile born in Amami, the silk road of the ocean
The Oshima Tsumugi is said to be one of the three top textiles in the world, along with Persian carpets and Gobelin tapestry.
It has existed from approximately 1,300 years ago, from the Nara era in Japan. Today, it is manufactured in various areas of Kagoshima Prefecture, but because its roots are in Amami Oshima, officially it is called “authentic Amami Oshima Tsumugi”.
Mud dye, which is made possible by the iron rich mud created by Amami’s nature, dyes silk threads into a beautiful, shinny, deep, rich black color. The delicate graphical splash patterns that are drawn by a gathering of over 10 million dots is reversible, characteristic of plain weave. Made through a manufacturing period of over six months, and approximately 40 creative processes, the authentic Amami Oshima Tsumugi has many one-and-only unique characteristics.
About Amami Oshima:
Amami Oshima, located approximately in the middle of mainland Kagoshima Prefecture and Okinawa Prefecture, is the 3rd largest remote island in Japan. There are many natural and scenic sites on the island, such as Kinsakubaru Virgin Forest where mangrove and other subtropical plants grow, along with rare animals, Ohama Coastal Park famed for its beautiful sunset, and Ayamaru Point where one can enjoy a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean.

海のシルクロードと言われる奄美が生み出すスピリチュアルなテキスタイル“本場奄美大島紬”。
大島紬は、ペルシャ絨毯、ゴブラン織りと合わせて、世界三大織物とされています。
約1300年前、奈良時代から存在し、現在では鹿児島県内各地で製造されており、そのルーツは奄美大島にあるため、正式には「本場奄美大島紬」と呼ばれています。
奄美の自然が生み出す鉄分豊富な泥が可能にする泥染めは、絹糸を美しく、光沢を帯びた黒色へと染めてゆき、1000万以上の点の集合体から描かれる精緻でグラフィカルな絣模様は、平織り特有のリバーシブル。製造期間半年以上、約40にもおよぶ工程からつくられる本場奄美大島紬は、唯一無二の特徴を持っています。
奄美大島とは：
鹿児島・奄美大島は、鹿児島県本土と沖縄県のほぼ中央に位置する、国内で3番目に大きな離島。マングローブや亜熱帯植物が茂り稀少な生物も生息している金作原（きんさくばる）原生林、夕陽の美しい大浜海浜公園、水平線のパノラマが広がるあやまる岬など、多くの自然と景勝地を有している。
