Old World Germany In Iowa | Amana Colonies | Full Time RV Living
This video is about Amana Colonies located in Iowa County in east-central Iowa.
Amana is home to the Amana Corporation which is an American brand of household appliances. It was founded in 1934 by George Foerstner as The Electrical Equipment Co. in Middle Amana, Iowa, to manufacture commercial walk-in coolers. The business was later owned by the Amana Society and became known as Amana Refrigeration, Inc.
Amana appliances are primarily and proudly made in the United States of America. The refrigerators are made in the town of Amana, Iowa. Dishwashers and other appliances are made in factories in Ohio while some ranges are made in Oklahoma.
The Amana Colonies are seven villages on 26,000 acres (11,000 ha) located in Iowa County in east-central Iowa, United States: Amana (or Main Amana), East Amana, High Amana, Middle Amana, South Amana, West Amana, and Homestead. The villages were built and settled by German Pietists, who were persecuted in their homeland by the German state government and the Lutheran Church. Calling themselves the True Inspiration Congregations (German: Wahre Inspirations Gemeinden),[3] they first settled in New York near Buffalo in what is now the town of West Seneca. However, seeking more isolated surroundings, they moved to Iowa (near present-day Iowa City) in 1856. They lived a communal life until 1932.
For eighty years, the Amana Colony maintained an almost completely self-sufficient local economy, importing very little from the industrializing American economy. The Amanians were able to achieve this independence and lifestyle by adhering to the specialized crafting and farming occupations that they had brought with them from Europe. Craftsmen passed their skills and techniques on from one generation to the next. They used hand, horse, wind, and water power, and made their own furniture, clothes, and other goods. The community voted to form a for-profit organization during the Great Depression, the Amana Society, which included the Amana Corporation.
Today, the Seven Villages of Amana are a tourist attraction known for its restaurants and craft shops. The colony was listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1965.

EYRNE 171 - Williamsburg Iowa Exit 225 I-80 Abandoned Colony Village Restaurant Wasserbahn at Amana
The World’s Largest Road Trip at exit 225 on I-80 in Iowa brings you to Williamsburg, Iowa near the Amana Colonies – This exit comes complete with the Wasserbahn Waterpark and Resort, Ramada, and Casey’s General Store. Wasserbahn boasts a small network of shops, restaurants, a well-kept miniature golf, and a winery/antiques.
Across the street we found an old once-thriving restaurant, the Colony Village. Judging by its exterior and what we could see of the interior, it used to be a family friendly, cozy-themed place for families traveling or staying at the waterpark to stop and enjoy. It currently sits vacant, a reminder of things that once were.
Once again (because of this exit’s closeness with past exits), you can get off here to head north towards the Amana Colonies – a cluster of 7 German villages that were founded in 1855 and are now listed as a National Historic Landmark that is well known for its artisan craft shops and restaurants. ENJOY!

The Amana Spirit - - My Iowa
Visiting the Amana Colonies annually for 20 years inspired me to make this video. Its rich history, beautiful landscape, friendliness, great dining and many specialty shops make it one of a kind. In 1965 the Amana Colonies were named a National Historic Landmark.
Photos shown in this video were taken from Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret's (The Amanas - - A Photographic Journey) and David Heusinkveld (The Amana Landscape) books; a few were also from the Amanas.
EYRNE 169 - Johnson County Iowa on Interstate 80 at Mile 236 We Found the Amana Colonies Rest Area
This is a rest area at mile marker 236 on I-80 in Johnson Iowa. ENJOY!
This rest area brings more than just a place to have a power nap and walk the dog. This rest stop has the following services: Handicap Restrooms, Garbage and Recycle bins, Pet walking area, Phone, Picnic tables, RV dump station, Vending machines, Wireless access, and tons of history. We found information on the Amana Colonies and the great past and present of the education system in Iowa. Iowa takes great pride in their state and it shows by the work they have put into preserving and respecting their past at these rest areas. We love these places because it is something that even well traveled people of the interstate might overlook. The building had brickwork around the entire outside that was in the shape of books. There were subjects on everything. It was hard to find a repeat. When looking at the google earth intro, you can see the layout of the picnic areas are the general layout of the colonies. Go ahead and pause the video to read the historical markers we found at this exit. Thank you for joining us on this exit and we will see you at the next!

Room after room sits silent and empty, paper slowly peeling from the walls. Few footsteps ever echo along the cracked tile floors.
