USA perform Antigone at Ubumuntu 2015
MindLeaps (formerly Rebecca Davis Dance Company) created the original ballet “Antigone”, which premiered in Philadelphia in 2006. “The classic-meets-modern aesthetic — think ballet set to original music and spoken text — energizes Sophocles’ timeless tale and makes this the most intriguing dance premiere this season.” (– Philadelphia Magazine)
The ballet is based on the famous Greek tragedy by Sophocles, but is set outside of any specific time period or geographic location. The relationship between two sisters, Antigone and Ismene, becomes strained after their brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, die battling against each other in war. The new king declares one brother a hero and the other a traitor. As a traitor, his body is ordered to be left unburied on the battlefield. Ismeme accepts the decree, but Antigone feels it is her duty to bury her brother’s body.
Rebecca Davis, entrepreneur and choreographer, founded MindLeaps (formerly known as RDDC) at the age of 23. MindLeaps is a not-for-profit organization that creates dance and educational programs for street children and underserved youth in post-conflict and developing countries. Rebecca has led MindLeaps to standardize a dance curriculum that teaches street children cognitive skills to a level at which they are able to enter the formal education system and succeed in school.
Originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, Rebecca has choreographed and taught in Canada, Russia, Ukraine, Rwanda, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Guinea and the United States. She was classically trained in the Russian Vaganova method of ballet while studying in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Krasnoyarsk, Russia. She received a degree in choreography from The Saint Petersburg Conservatory under the tutelage of Nikolai Boyarchikov (former Artistic Director, The Mussorgsky Ballet). She is a two-time Fulbright scholar and summa cum laude graduate of Temple University with a Bachelors of Business Administration in Entrepreneurship. She holds a Masters of International Relations with a concentration in Peacekeeping from American Military University. In 2010, she was awarded the Carl Wilkens Fellowship from the Genocide Intervention Network.
In 2013, CCTV made a documentary about Rebecca’s work in Rwanda. Rebecca has appeared on The Melissa-Harris Perry Show, given two TEDx talks, and been a guest speaker at several universities, including Brandeis, Brown, Princeton, and University of Michigan.
In 2014, she gave presentations at the Pan-African Film Festival (Los Angeles) United Nations Film Festival (San Francisco), K-Lab (Rwanda), and Fulbright’s International Institute of Education Seminary (Philadelphia).
Over the last two years, Rebecca’s work has been featured in several publications, including: Project M, Dance Studio Life, American Military University’s Spotlight, The New Times (Rwanda), Dance Magazine, Dance Teacher Magazine, and The Good Service Magazine.
In 2015, Rebecca has been selected to serve as the Greater New York City’s Fulbright Alumnus-in-Residence for her work involving arts, technology and education in conflict zones.

The Golden Age: Anton Chekhov And The Moscow Art Theater
On March 8th, 2017 the Jordan Center welcomed critically acclaimed Russian stage director Aleksey Burago for “The Golden Age: Anton Chekhov And The Moscow Art Theater.” Burago discussed a lesser-known Chekhov and his influence on the Moscow Art Theater. Through the decoding of Chekhov’s letters and memoirs, as well as his extensive work in directing Chekhov’s plays and short stories, Burago revealed a more relatable Chekhov, one whose work was never intended to be as depressive as most productions around the world.
From an early age, Anton Chekov was a theater lover. He wrote his first play when he was eighteen years old and eagerly presented it to Maria Nikolevna Ermolova, leading actress of the Imperial Theater. Of course she never read it.
All his life, Anton Chekhov was obsessed with the idea of creating a new theater. He used to spend hours in the studios of his friends—Russian impressionist painters Levitan and Korovin—and remarked that he longed to create the same kind of theater as the paintings on their canvases, one that would reflect real life around him, bursting with its colorful flaws, contradictions and complexity.
Because his ideas were new for his time, Chekhov felt discouraged by the various attempts of established theaters to stage his plays. After the infamous Seagull flop at the Alexandriisky Theater, Chekhov fled from St. Petersburg, promising himself and his close friends that he would never write another play. It took only the patience and intelligence of Nemerovich-Danchenko to convince Chekhov to give his unsuccessful play another try, this time to a new theater company led by Nemerovich-Danchenko and a certain actor/director named Konstantin Stanislavsky. What followed was a production that would elevate Chekhov’s play to unforeseeable heights and shape him as one of the most important playwrights of all time.
Join critically acclaimed Russian stage director Aleksey Burago as he discusses a lesser-known Chekhov and his influence on the Moscow Art Theater. Through the decoding of Chekhov’s letters and memoirs, as well as his extensive work in directing Chekhov’s plays and short stories, Burago reveals a more relatable Chekhov, one whose work was never intended to be as depressive as most productions around the world.
A graduate of the Moscow Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS), Aleksey Burago is a protégé of the world famous Russian director Pytor Fomenko. He has directed many productions to critical acclaim in Europe and America, including Beyond Recognition, which had a sold-out run at the Hermitage Theatre in St. Petersburg. His television production of Queen of Spades (Moscow TV) also received rave reviews. In New York, Aleksey has directed over thirty productions, including On the Eve (Obie Nominee), Ah, My Dear Anderson (Time Out NY Critic’s Pick), Gamblers, The Master and Margarita, Lady with a Lapdog With Jokes and a Happy Ending, Vassa, An Absolutely Happy Village, In Paris, The Seagull, The Magic Forest of Baba Yaga, The Bear, The Great Nothing, Uncle Vanya, Avenue of Wonder and My Uncle Chekhov. His latest production of Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment played to rave reviews and enjoyed many sold-out performances at the West End Theater.
Aleksey is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Best Director Award at the Moscow Annual Festival of Classical Plays, Best Director Award at the St. Petersburg Comedy Festival, and the Best Show Award at the 2010 International United Solo Festival. Additionally, Aleksey’s creation of Billy Bob Boils the Sea was selected to represent the United States at the 9th International Ordu Youth and Children’s Festival in Turkey. As a teacher, Aleksey has taught around the world, including at the Theatre Academy and Conservatory in St. Petersburg, Danish Theatre School GITIS Scandinavia in Denmark, Manhattanville College, the International Festival in Mexico, Bilkent University in Ankara Turkey, and most recently at the Theater Communications Laboratory in Osaka and Tokyo, Japan.

360 Photo in Action: Swan Lake
It's an enduring tale of good and evil. This week, the acclaimed American Ballet Theatre is performing the classic Swan Lake at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. Set to Tchaikovsky's first ballet score, it debuted in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1877, and since has become one of the world's most beloved ballets. Here, in the second act, a group of swan maidens and their queen, Odette (danced by Gillian Murphy), float around a moonlit lake while a young prince looks on.
The classic ballet, with seven nearly sold-out performances, is just part of the repertoire the company dances during its eight-week run at the Met. The world-class dancers of the American Ballet Theatre travel the United States annually and make 15 international tours to 42 countries. The theater, under the artistic direction of Kevin McKenzie, was formed in 1939, and brings music and dance to some of the greatest stages in the world.
TEDxDirigo - Figures of Speech - The Puppet As Metaphoric Being
At its root, puppet theater addresses issues of identity and existence, as puppets move with striking speed from lifeless object to mythic icon, raising the questions: What is the spark that ignites life? How does the puppet's life differ from my own? Why am I me and not you? Figures of Speech Theatre demonstrates the power of puppets as metaphoric beings, images of the transcendent nature of life.

SUMMARY
=======
James Longstreet (January 8, 1821 – January 2, 1904) was one of the foremost Confederate generals of the American Civil War and the principal subordinate to General Robert E. Lee, who called him his Old War Horse. He served under Lee as a corps commander for many of the famous battles fought by the Army of Northern Virginia in the Eastern Theater, and briefly with Braxton Bragg in the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater.
After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Longstreet served in the Mexican–American War. He was wounded in the thigh at the Battle of Chapultepec, and afterward married his first wife, Louise Garland. Throughout the 1850s, he served on frontier duty in the American Southwest. In June 1861, Longstreet resigned his U.S. Army commission and joined the Confederate Army. He commanded Confederate troops during an early victory at Blackburn's Ford in July and played a minor role at the First Battle of Bull Run.
Longstreet's talents as a general made significant contributions to several important Confederate victories, mostly in the Eastern Theater as one of Robert E. Lee's chief subordinates in the Army of Northern Virginia. He performed poorly at Seven Pines by accidentally marching his men down the wrong road, causing them to be late in arrival. He played an important role in the success of the Seven Days Battles in the summer of 1862. Longstreet led a devastating counterattack that routed the Union army at Second Bull Run in August. His men held their ground in defensive roles at Antietam and Fredericksburg. Longstreet's most controversial service was at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, where he openly disagreed with General Lee on the tactics to be employed and reluctantly supervised several attacks on Union forces, including the disastrous Pickett's Charge. Afterwards, Longstreet was, at his own request, sent to the Western Theater to fight under Braxton Bragg, where his troops launched a ferocious assault on the Union lines at Chickamauga, which carried the day. Afterwards, his performance in semiautonomous command during the Knoxville Campaign resulted in a Confederate defeat. Longstreet's tenure in the Western Theater was marred by his central role in numerous conflicts amongst important Confederate generals. Unhappy serving under Bragg, Longstreet and his men were sent back to Lee. He ably commanded troops during the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864, where he was seriously wounded by friendly fire. He later returned to the field, serving under Lee in the Siege of Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign.
He enjoyed a successful post-war career working for the U.S. government as a diplomat, civil servant, and administrator. His conversion to the Republican Party and his cooperation with his old friend, President Ulysses S. Grant, as well as critical comments he wrote in his memoirs about General Lee's wartime performance, made him anathema to many of his former Confederate colleagues. His reputation in the South further suffered when he led African-American militia against the anti-Reconstruction White League at the Battle of Liberty Place in 1874. Authors of the Lost Cause movement focused on Longstreet's actions at Gettysburg as a primary reason for the Confederacy's loss ...

Lyrics: They came by the way of the Bering Strait not knowing their way or what would be their fate. Some rode across the Atlantic waves aboard the Mayflower or a ship of slaves. Mine came by way of an aeroplane. You see, the common ground is that they stayed. What is our origin, I ask? Does it lie in the present or the past? I remember when I was a girl a missionary asked me: Do you know the English tongue? Do you know Jesus? And I said...
Yes I am an American, and my skin is brown. I am an American with a name you can pronounce. Yes I am an American, born in this here town. I am an American, I've nothing to renounce.
Now first there were dreams of Utopia. Then came the footsteps to make it stronger. Thank God for the blood that was shed for us. Some marched and some took seats on a bus. Much of the work was already done. You see, the towers fell and fables spun. And then a senator spoke of hope. I wept in joy for a broken rope. But in Arizona 2010 the law of the land changed: Who are you and do you belong? You're lookin' like you are strange. And they said...
Yes I am an American, the books don't make it true. I am an American, my heart's red, white, and blue. Yes I am an American, as God-fearing as you. I am an American, I sing for freedom too.
This land isn't our land anymore than one can own a man...
I believe in a better world where we face each other. We'll remember what it was like for our forefathers, and we'll say...
Yes I am an American, I'll shout it all around. I am an American, I'll stand and I'll annouce. Yes I am an American, I work in this here town. I am an American, I've nothing to renounce. Yes I am an American, the books don't make it true. I am an American, my heart's red, white, and blue. Yes I am an American, as God-fearing as you. I am an American, I sing for freedom too, I sing for freedom too, I sing for freedom too.

The World's Most Beautiful Woman / Soprano Lina Cavalieri ~ L'Altra Notte (1910)
Italian soprano Lina Cavalieri (1874-1944) / L'Altra Notte / (Mefistofele (Boito) Recorded: February 1910 --
Italian operatic soprano Lina Cavalieri (December, 25, 1874-February 7, 1944), known for her great beauty.
Born Natalina Cavalieri in Viterbo, Latium, Italy, she lost her parents at the age of fifteen and became a ward of the state, sent to live in a Roman Catholic orphanage. The vivacious young girl was extremely unhappy under the strict raising of the nuns, and at the first opportunity she ran away with a touring theatrical group.
Blessed with a good singing voice, a young Cavalieri made her way to Paris, France, where her stunning good looks opened doors and she obtained work as a singer at one of the city's café-concerts. From there she performed at a variety of music halls and other such venues around Europe while still working to develop her voice for the opera. A soprano, Cavalieri took voice lessons and made her opera debut in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1900, the same year she married her first husband, the Russian Prince Bariatinsky. Eventually she followed in the footsteps of Hariclea Darclée as one of the first stars of Puccini's Tosca. In 1904 she sang at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo then in 1905, at the Sarah Bernhardt Theatre in Paris, Cavalieri starred opposite Enrico Caruso in the Umberto Giordano opera, Fedora. From there, she and Caruso took the show to New York City, debuting with it at the Metropolitan Opera on December 5, 1906.
Cavalieri remained with the Metropolitan Opera for the next two seasons performing again with Caruso in 1907 in Puccini's Manon Lescaut. Renowned as much for her great beauty as for her singing voice, she became one of the most photographed stars of her time. Frequently referred to as the world's most beautiful woman, she was part of the tightlacing tradition that saw women use corsetry to create an hour-glass figure. During the 1909-1910 season she sang with Oscar Hammerstein's Manhattan Opera Company. Her first marriage long over, she had a whirlwind romance and marriage with Robert Winthrop Chanler (1872-1930), a member of New York's prominent Astor family. However, this marriage lasted only a very short time (1) and Cavalieri returned to Europe where she became a much-loved star in pre-Revolutionary St. Petersburg, Russia, and in the Ukraine.
During her career, Cavalieri sang with other opera greats such as the Italian baritone Titta Ruffo and the French tenor Lucien Muratore, whom she married in 1913. After retiring from the stage, Cavalieri ran a cosmetic salon in Paris. In 1914, on the eve of her fortieth birthday — her beauty still spectacular — she wrote an advice column on make-up for women in Femina magazine and published a book, My Secrets of Beauty. In 1915, she returned to her native Italy to make motion pictures. When that country became involved in World War I, she went to the United States where she made four more silent films. The last three of her films were the product of her friend, the Belgian film director Edward José.
Married for the fourth time to Paolo dArvanni, Cavalieri returned to live with her husband in Italy. Well into her sixties when World War II broke out, she nevertheless worked as a volunteer nurse. Cavalieri was killed in 1944 during an Allied bombing raid that destroyed her home in the outskirts of Florence.
La Cavalieri's discography is slim. In 1910, for Columbia, she recorded arias from Faust, Carmen, Mefistofele, La bohème, Manon Lescaut and Tosca, as well as the song, Maria, Marì! (Ah! Marì! Ah! Marì!). In 1917, for Pathé, the soprano recorded Le rêve passé, with Muratore.
She was painted by the Italian artist Giovanni Boldini (acquired by Maurice Rothschild) and by the Swiss-born American artist Adolfo Müller-Ury (1862-1947). The latter is now the property of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, the gift of Nicholas Meredith Turner in memory of his wife the soprano Jessica Dragonette. Hers is the face that appears repeatedly, obsessively in Piero Fornasetti's designs.
In 1955, Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida portrayed Cavalieri in the film The World's Most Beautiful Woman. In 2004, a book was published authored by Paul Fryer and Olga Usova titled 'Lina Cavalieri -The Life of Operas Greatest Beauty, 1874-1944'. (wikipedia)
(1) During her brief marriage, Cavalieri, so the story goes, managed to cajole Chanler out of his entire considerable fortune. Chanler's brother, committed to a mental institution in Virginia, sent a short and highly publicized telegram reading Who's looney now? (NYT)

This is our moment to unite, recognizing the power of dance to transform lives, male and female, level socio-economic thresholds, and celebrate the gift of dance in our lives, and the positive impact it has on our communities.
BAYER BALLET - MISSION
Bayer Ballet Company, 501(c)3 public charity organization, is a community service organization committed to preserving the art and culture of the Vaganova method of classical ballet.
Artists seeking a holistic approach to the art directly experience the benefits of the Vaganova method, a scientifically based and physiologically sound methodology, which incorporates the laws of physics and bio-mechanics. This method prepares dancers with a solid foundation that allows them to be adaptable to other dance styles and choreography, creating freedom of movement to allow the dancer to grow artistically.
We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of ballet, preserving the traditions of Vaganova through a systematic approach, based on the culture and curriculum of the Vaganova method. This foundation creates impeccable artistry and creativity, awareness, mind and body, within the dancer; thereby, allowing them to adapt to various styles and learn choreography with ease.
Our mission is to enhance the cultural well-being of our community by creating equitable accessibility to the Vaganova method of international ballet through educational and interactive events and performances, which expose and explore the intricacies of this method; thereby, providing the purest experience and insights into this artform. We strive to cultivate and foster an appreciation and love for the artform, providing opportunities for emerging artists in our community to engage, educate and collaborate with world-renowned master artists, while developing an outreach program that provides accessibility to this artform to our diverse community.
