Medieval America 27: Six States from St Louis to Fargo
In this episode of my trip around America I continue my journey north in the center of the country. I traveled into six new states, and cover 1250 miles in the course of eight days traveling ever north from St. Louis Missouri all the way to Fargo North Dakota.
We stop at several castles and a major museum.
With this video and the previous video (episode 26) I went from the New Orleans at the south of America all the way north to Fargo North Dakota bifurcating the country. There was a big swing in temperate and a constant uphill climb. I also noticed now in this video that the terrain is changing there is a lot more open space with enormous open fields and gentle rolling hills, with much fewer trees. It is clear we are heading toward the prairie states.

I traveled five new states over the course of eight days including
Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota
I went into Indiana and spent one night in Indianapolis. After that I moved on to Chicago Illinois

The Mars Cheese Castle in Wisconsin
Madison Wisconsin: The Morgridge Center Also known as the Red Gym, It was built in 1894 and was used as an armory and gymasium for the University of Wisconsin. It was designed in the Romanesque Revival style.
Then West on Route 18 across part of Iowa which is one of the most beautiful drives I have taken. all the way to Mason city Iowa. A little over 200 miles.
Then North into Minnesota for Minneapolis, St Paul and St cloud for four castles:
The Landmark Center in St Paul- Completed in 1902 it is also in the Romanesque Revival style but notice how different it looks because of the different stone compared to the Red Gym, (This building is pink granite ashlar) It was initially used as the State post office, courthouse and customs house.
The American Swedish Institute (The Swan Turnblad Mansion) It is built in Chateauesque style which is a revival style architecture based onFrench Renaissance Architecture. IT was completed in 1910 and is made of Bedford Limestone. It is also known as the swedish castle.
The Stanford Newel House in St. Paul It The core of the building was built in 1864 by a man named Lasher during the Civil War using locally quarried limestone. It was purchased in 1886 by Stanford Newel and upgraded with the tower and battlements added.
The UMinn NROTC Building - in Minneapolis, it is the University of Minnesota Armory. It was constructed in 1896. It originally served as the University Armory and Gymnasium. Over the years it has served various purposes and now is the home of the University Naval ROTC and gymnasium.
Fergus Falls Minnesota for the Kirkbride Building also known as the Fergus Falls State Mental Health Hospital . It is purported to be haunted. Construction was completed in 1907.
Ending in Fargo North Dakota and Unicorn Park.
Next up I will be traveling west and covering some of the Prairie States.
Akta Spelman (Swedish Fiddle Music) Paul Dahlin - ASI Spelmanslag at Gammelgarden
Three generations of the Dahlin family are part of the American Swedish Institutes Spelmanslag, performing traditional folk music of Rättvikarnas, Sweden. Paul Dahlin was born April 14, 1954, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He took up the fiddle in 1963, when he was nine. He was heir to a rich tradition of music from the Swedish province of Dalarna. Paul’s grandfather, Ivares Edvin Jonsson, departed his native Rojerasen (in the Dalarna province) in 1924 at the age of 19. His mother forbade him to take his fiddle, saying, You are going to America to work, not to play. Several years later, however, he was reunited with his beloved instrument. He spent the rest of his life in Minnesota, passing on his fiddling and fiddle-making traditions to his children, Bruce and Nancy (Paul's mother), and to Paul.
By the time he was 17, Paul was performing regularly with his elders at Swedish American events. As he mastered the idiom, he moved into the lead role while playing with his grandfather, who had Americanized his name to Edwin Johnson, and Uncle Bruce. The three fiddlers called their group the American Swedish Spelmans (folk instrumentalist) Trio. They made their first major public appearance at the Snoose Boulevard Festival in Minneapolis in 1971. They performed at festivals and on the public radio program Prairie Home Companion and, in 1983, gave a command performance for the king of Sweden when he visited the United States. Before his death in 1984, Through these performances Edwin Johnson, Paul’s grandfather was “discovered” by fiddlers from Sweden who were amazed by his faithfulness to the regional style and repertoire that was thought to have disappeared.
Dahlin began teaching Swedish instrumental music at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis. In 1985 he developed his class into the ASI Spelmanslag (fiddlers' team). Paul has served as musical director since its inception.
The popularity of the adult spelmanslag led to the creation of a youth fiddling group at the ASI. As one might imagine, Paul has invested much time and energy in teaching and encouraging this new generation of musicians.
When the group performed in 1989 at Sweden's largest folk music festival, Musick vid Siljan, Dahlin was hailed by his Swedish colleagues as an important keeper of a deep musical tradition that includes wedding tunes and dance melodies that are more direct and less ornamented than some strains of contemporary Swedish fiddling. In 1994 Paul was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts, recognition of his outstanding contributions as a keeper and teacher of Swedish American musical traditions.
His original composition Danielpojkens Polska was selected from 40 entries as the most outstanding composition in its genre at Sweden's Dalarnas Hemygdsrings competition. The tune is in the traditional polska form. Not to be confused with the polka, it is the oldest dance rhythm in Sweden and is considered by some scholars as a predecessor of the triple-meter waltz.
Paul's son, Daniel Dahlin, born in 1983, started playing the violin when he was five years old, starting first in a Suzuki program. Then, around the age of 14, he became interested in Swedish music.
Name of the musical trio Äkta Spelmän
Äkta (ék tuh), a Swedish word meaning “genuine” or “true,” is the name of this fiddle ensemble from Minnesota dedicated to the keeping of traditional Swedish music. The group’s leader, Paul Dahlin, fiddler, violin repairman, composer, festival organizer, and cultural spokesman, is the American “taproot” to one of Sweden’s most venerable and widely admired varieties of regional music, stemming from the Dalarna province.

Al Franken, in his first public appearance since a 3-judge panel ruled he earned the most votes in the Minnesota Senate election contest, speaks at the Aveda-sponsored Walk for Water Earth Day event in South Minneapolis.
Before the walk, the crowd was encouraged to do warmup exercises and Franken entertained with his swinging hips.

BREAKING NEWS TRUMP-Trump Just Made Stealth Move Against Sharia Law In 18 States
Anti-Sharia law legislation has been dominating state legislatures all across the country.No doubt emboldened by the President’s support for his agendas and initiatives.In 2017 alone there were approximately 23 new pieces of legislation that were introduced in 18 various states that would crack down on sharia law implementation in the United States.If taken into account collectively that brings the total number of legislative efforts regarding anti-sharia law legislation to a total of 217 in 43 different states over an eight-year period since 2010.All according to the Haas Institute at the University of California at Berkeley.The Institute specifically records and monitors this type of legislation across the country.The Guardian reported, “But Elsadig Elsheikh, director of the global justice program at the Haas Institute that carried out the research, said the purpose of the bills was to spread fear about Muslims living in America and to portray them as untrustworthy and out of step with American values.“Even if these bills do not become law they help to subject Muslims to surveillance and other forms of exclusion and discrimination,” he said.Of the 23 bills introduced to state legislatures this year, only two became law – in Arkansas and Texas.Four new states joined the growing list of legislatures where anti-sharia legislation has been attempted: Colorado, Connecticut, North Dakota and Wisconsin.All but one of the bills were introduced by Republicans.The exception was in Idaho where a committee with an unknown party affiliation was behind the move.Heidi Beirich, an expert on anti-Muslim hate groups at the Southern Poverty Law Center, sees the rash of state bills as signs that the provocative language coming out of Trump’s circle is having an impact.“At the state level, the number one push for anti-Muslim activists is anti-sharia bills.It’s a recurrent effort.”Trending: Vets Speechless After What They Caught Trump’s Navy SEAL Secretary Doing At Memorial Before Sunrise Trump himself called for all Muslims to be barred from entering the US when he was a presidential candidate, a sentiment that he has only barely tempered in his drive for a travel ban on several majority-Muslim countries.Several of the individuals he chose as key advisers also have a controversial track record.Steve Bannon, Trump’s former chief strategist in the White House, once wrote a film script that warned of the country turning into the “Islamic States of America”.The short-lived national security adviser Michael Flynn called Islamism a “vicious c****r” inside all Muslims that has to be “excised”, while former White House aide Sebastian Gorka was once fired by the FBI as a counter-terrorism lecturer for his Islamophobic views.”The majority of the initial legislation came about after the backlash over the potential mosque that people wanted to create in downtown Manhattan just blocks away from Ground Zero.Now the legislation is focusing on calling out “foreign laws” and how th
