Beyond Amsterdam | Best places to visit around the city | Netherlands
Everyone knows Amsterdam, right?
But what do we really know about the city, the old city, the canals? Its major tourist attractions? And what else? Have you already planned a visit to Amsterdam?
The purpose of this short film is to go beyond the expected, and make you discover the real face of Amsterdam, its surroundings, its best places around the city. The contrasts between the center and the neighbourhoods are really surprising. The atmosphere is different, it is much more peaceful and true, and we get the feeling of a really nice way of life of its inhabitants.
We spent 4 days immersing ourself in the neighbourhoods of the city, mainly Westerpark, which is an old industrial quarter that is living a real metamorphosis. Then, we spend some day experiencing the surroundings of Amsterdam, going to the Beach at Zandvoort, then to a more rural region called Waterland in old-Holland and finally to one of the most popular sport in the Netherlands, Keukenhof.
Do you want now to see the real face Amsterdam and the true way of life in the Netherlands?

Amsterdam Odyssey: Discover the city in 360 #7: Station Sloterdijk
The area around Station Sloterdijk is developing fast and with a big role for sustainability. With a 10 minutes train ride it's easy to reach from Schiphol. Besides some 'standard' hotels, there's Café Bret (in recycled sea containers, with local and organic products on its' menu and parties), De Amsterdamsche Tram (in an old tram, also local and organic products) and the Train Lodge: a hostel in a night train that once drove between Zurich and Rome.

Amsterdam Odyssey: Discover the city in 360 #6: Bos en Lommer
Gentrification happens everywhere, like here in Bos en Lommer. Till only a few years ago it really wasn't cool to live here, but now one can speak out loud when being asked in which neighbourhood do you live?
The gentrification of Amsterdam - VPRO documentary - 2017
Large cities in the world like Amsterdam have become a magnet for newcomers, tourists, expats and laptop nomads. The pressure is also increasing in our capital Amsterdam that is becoming more and more gentrified. Over the next fifteen years, Amsterdam must grow to the magical number of 1 million inhabitants. Is Amsterdam going to follow London or Paris, where the middle class disappears and gentrification is the rule? What does that do to Amsterdam and is there something to do against it?
During the credit crisis there was not sufficient construction done in cities, as a result of which the pressure on the housing market is now enormous and a bubble is threatening. Residents no longer have the idea that the center of the city belongs to them: it has become something more of a Disneyland for adults. And that's valid for the city center as much as for the decentralized old neighborhoods, which are becoming popular items for investors. More and more city dwellers feel excluded. But there is hardly any room for the many new residents.
The super-de-luxe apartments that are currently being built around the Amsterdam Dam and on the Amstel and IJ banks illustrate how the center is too expensive for most people to be able to live there. This creates a waterbed effect for surrounding neighborhoods.
The Indische Buurt is such a neighborhood where the change of the city is clearly visible. Where, for example, the Javastraat was still ruined seven years ago and call shops and criminal practices clearly visible on the streets, has changed now into a hipand trending street of Amsterdam. Except for a few vegetable stores left, this street is completely gentrified.
Residents, retailers, property developers and urban planners analyze what the pressure on the city means in practice. The average square meter price for a owner-occupied home is approaching € 5,000 and in the free rental sector amounts of € 1500 for an apartment are quite normal. In addition, the waiting list for social rented housing is enormous. Cities from which middle-class families are displaced and where expats, tourists and students rule. Will the city still be attractive and liveable in ten years' time or has it become a sort of instagram decor and at best a machine for real estate developers?
Can we still save the soul of the city? Who owns the city of the future?

DJI - Immigration detention in The Netherlands (English)
Going Dutch. Holland’s refugee integration success story.
More films about refugees:
According to the European Council, around two million refugees have come to the EU since 2015. The rapid influx of migrants who need help adjusting to their new environments has created societal tensions and challenges for European countries’ governments. It’s a huge humanitarian crisis needs to be addressed.
One of the most liberal EU countries, Holland, is seen as a refugee success story. Despite significant differences between its culture and that of the Middle-Eastern and North African countries of the refugees, it seems to be integrating migrants successfully.
RT Doc visits Holland to find the recipe for success. One of its ingredients is grass-roots organisation. Volunteer-based NGOs provide refugees with legal advice, arrange free language courses and help them understand Dutch culture. Another component is that unlike in some other host countries, the refugees are not granted permanent residency from the start. They are given a 5-year temporary one. During this period they receive financial aid and get assistance with accommodation. At the end of it, they must demonstrate they can support themselves as members of Dutch society.

Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme,[14] indicative of the city's origin as a dam of the river Amstel. Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age (17th century), a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading center for finance and diamonds.[15] In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded, and many new neighborhoods and suburbs were planned and built. The 17th-century canals of Amsterdam and the 19–20th century Defence Line of Amsterdam are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
As the commercial capital of the Netherlands and one of the top financial centres in Europe, Amsterdam is considered an alpha world city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) study group. The city is also the cultural capital of the Netherlands.[16] Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, and seven of the world's 500 largest companies, including Philips and ING, are based in the city.[17] In 2012, Amsterdam was ranked the second best city in which to live by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)[18] and 12th globally on quality of living for environment and infrastructure by Mercer .[19] The city was previously ranked 3rd in innovation by 2thinknow in the Innovation Cities Index 2009.[20]
Famous Amsterdam residents included Anne Frank the diairist, the artist Vincent van Gogh, and the philosopher Baruch Spinoza.
The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world, is located in the city center. Amsterdam's main attractions, including its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, Anne Frank House, Amsterdam Museum, its red-light district, and its many cannabis coffee shops draw more than 5 million international visitors annually.[
