Washington Park, Anacortes, WA, USA
Beautiful views of Guemes Channel and Burrows Bay as seen from Washington Park and also the park's famous leaning tree (one of Washington state's most photographed tree) in the historic town of Anacortes on Fidalgo Island in Skagit County, Washington, USA during our trip on Sep. 3, 2011.
Washington Park is located on a peninsula at the western tip of Fidalgo Island. The 220-acre city park features camping, a boat launch, and day use picnic sites. The park juts into Rosario Strait on the western edge of Anacortes, offering territorial views. A scenic 2.3-mile one-way loop road winds through the park's forested hills and meadows with views of the San Juan Islands and Olympic Mountains. The park offers sweeping views of Guemes Channel on one side and Burrows Bay on the other.
At Sunset Beach, on the north shore, there is a boat launch, restrooms, reservable picnic shelter, playground and open play area. There are 75 campsites, restrooms, showers and laundry services in the overnight area. Picnic sites and car pullouts provide beach access along Green Point, the west shoreline. The loop road is used by cars, joggers, bicyclists and walkers.
Anacortes is the gateway to the San Juan and Vancouver Islands. Downtown Anacortes has over 125 life-sized murals painted by local resident Bill Mitchell. He painted the murals over the last 25 years from historical photographs. His art is on display all over Downtown buildings with depictions of historic scenes. Pick up a free mural map at the Visitor Center located at 819 Commercial Avenue as it is a wonderful way to discover Anacortes.
Anacortes is located 18 miles west of Mount Vernon and about one hour drive from Bellingham to the north and Seattle to the south.
Driving directions to the park: From I-5 take Highway 20 West. Enter Anacortes on Spur 20 and take Commercial Avenue to 12th Street. Turn left on 12th and follow the signs (about 3 miles) to Washington Park.

San Juan Islands Orca Whale Watching Kayak Trips: The San Juan Islands of Washington are famous as the top orca whale watching location in the United States. The first park in the world dedicated to whale watching was created here. Our San Juan Island kayak tours are designed as orca whale watching kayak trips. Of all orca whale sightings in Washington state, over 95% occur in just one relatively small area that forms the western edge of the San Juan Islands. This is where the killer whales do nearly all of their hunting and playing. And it's the exact location where Sea Quest kayak trips take you orca whale watching!
Our sea kayaking routes are planned to maximize your chances to kayak with orcas. We don't see them every time, but about 2/3rds of our kayak trip guests enjoy killer whale sightings. Remember, these are wild orca whales and they don't perform on schedule, so we can't guarantee success on every kayak trip! Be sure to check out our blog for monthly reports on how the whales are doing and our recent whale watching success rates.
Sadly, there are companies that advertise kayaking with the orcas in the San Juan Islands that never kayak in the primary orca whale watching area. It is very unlikely that you will be killer whale watching on their kayaking trips. They may see the orca whales once a month or week, but we often see them several times a day!
Remember, Sea Quest has been leading kayak tours for over 20 years and our San Juan Island kayak trips are guided by actual biologists and environmental scientists that can tell you about the lives of these amazing animals. Our record of success is the best!
Kayak Whale Watching in the San Juan Islands: Many people ask us if it is safe to kayak with orcas. The answer is an emphatic YES! These intelligent whales have never injured a human in the wild. (Only ill-treated captive orca whales have harmed people.) Orca whales are extremely aware of their surroundings and NEVER collide with kayaks. They approach kayaks with the same respect that we offer them. The killer whales of the San Juan Islands are the most studied whales in the world; they in turn have observed humans for at least six thousand years. Stable family groups, called pods, represent several generations and include grandmothers (the pod leaders), adolescents, infants, and huge bulls. Each family member is recognized by its distinctive markings and can live as long as a human. Much of what is known about the orca whale's highly-organized social life has been learned from the resident pods you can watch from kayaks in the San Juan Islands of Washington.
The beautiful San Juan Islands of Washington state are the most popular summer kayaking tour destination in the world. Friday Harbor is easily accessed from Seattle, and the San Juan Islands lie within the Puget Sound and straddle the US-Canada border where Washington meets British Columbia. The rural archipelago encompasses several hundred islands, rocks, and reefs. Hundreds of miles of twisting shorelines are perfect for exploration on sea kayak tours. The sheltered waters of the San Juans are the perfect place for beginners to kayak with killer whales.

Friday Harbor Washington - San Juan Islands Puget Sound
Friday Harbor is a favorite destination for many visiting the San Juan Islands. Reachable by Washington State Ferry, Private Boat, or Float Plane, Friday Harbor is a great place to catch a Whale Watching Excursion boat, go on a fishing charter or to make as a home base for visiting day trips to nearby Orcas Island, and Lopez Island.
The Washington State Ferry makes it easy to bring your car from the mainland so you can explore the Islands and you can also continue on to Victoria on Vancouver Island in Canada. Friday Harbor is the only incorporated city in the San Juan Islands and its also the county seat.
No visit to the San Juan Islands is complete without a visit to Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor with shares the same island as Friday Harbor.
People are always asking me how I made these videos with cool FX. If you're interested in how I made this video on my home computer and the software I used here is a link:

My Vacation at Friday Harbor & Juniper Lane guesthouse Washington State
I vacationed early August at Juniper Lane guesthouse at Friday Harbor on San Juan Island off the coast of Washington State. I flew there, took a ferry, and stayed at a beautiful tourist town. I went whale watching but only saw seals and a lighthouse.
Juniper Lane is the brown shingle house with the purple trim and the solar double windmill.
I made this video using Google Auto Awesome which definitely needs work! Editing was very difficult and slow.

Friday Harbor, San Juan Islands - Ferry Tour and Best Pizza In Washington State!
You can't get any further from New York City and still be in the continental USA, but Friday Harbor on San Juan Island has some of the best NY Style pizza in the Pacific Northwest for sure.
The ferry ride to Friday Harbor departs from Anacortes on Fidalgo Island and about an hour later pulls into the main San Juan Island. The views along the way are incredible for the nature-lover, and all will enjoy the sea planes that land and take off around you and the random military fighter jet that shows up to provide an escort.
Enjoy the views from the ferry and the brief tour of Friday Harbor before sitting down at 'Cousin Vinnie's' old school pizza place, decorated with some old black and white photos and adorned with an old fashion juke box.
A quick stop at the wine and cheese bar is also worth it and don't leave the island without checking out the Whale Museum - gives all a good insight into the lives of the local Orcas that are often seen among the San Juan Islands.
Enjoy!!
