Ancient Aptera Crete
The ancient city of Aptera sits on a hill overlooking Souda Bay. The site dates from 8th century BC and was occupied up until the 7 century AD following a powerful earthquake.
Well worth a visit with remain of roman cisterns baths and an ancient theatre.
The views from the site are worth the visit on their own.
The Turkish fort can be seen from Sophia's House looking West on top of the hill.
Small entrance fee.

Aptera Ancient, Crete
Аптера – древний город, процветавший на Крите в благодатный минойский период развития острова. Он располагался в западной части острова, и сейчас его развалины можно увидеть между городами Ретимно и Ханья. Об Аптере упоминалось в глиняных табличках, Линейном письме Б, найденных в Кносском дворце. В них город описывался как важный торговый и политический центр. Также, в пользу версии о величии и богатстве города говорят множество найденных монет, которые чеканились именно в Аптере, о чем свидетельствуют надписи на монетах. Согласно легенде, свое название город получил благодаря музыкальному соревнованию между Музами и Сиренами.
Удача улыбнулась Музам, а Сирены, испытав горечь поражения, скинули свое оперение, оставшись бескрылыми и потеряв способность летать. Аптера, в переводе с греческого, звучит как «бескрылый».
Аптера, благодаря своему географическому положению, занимал ведущие позиции в торговле и мореплавании. Два порта, расположенные по обе стороны залива Суда, позволяли городу успешно заниматься военно-морским делом, торговлей, следовательно, процветать, улучшая экономическое положение. Жители города занимались сельским хозяйством, строительством, ремесленничеством. Наши современники поражаются инженерной точности, с какой были возведены здания в древней Аптере. Имелись в городе акведуки, подающие в город воду. На площади города были найдены остатки древних храмов, амфитеатра, купольных сооружений, похожих на цистерны. Предполагается, что это были или зернохранилища, или водяные емкости для общественных бань. Кроме построек на территории Аптеры были найдены статуи, сосуды, множество монет.
В VII веке н.э. город был разрушен в результате сильного землетрясения. Нападение арабов в 823 году окончательно прекратило существование города. Сегодня город Аптера – живописные развалины, в которых каждое разрушенное строение, каждый камень свидетельствуют о былом расцвете. Территория города была ограничена стеной, длиной в 4 километра, остатки которой можно увидеть и сегодня. Стена тоже сильно пострадала во время землетрясения, однако благодаря Европейскому Союзу и его экономической поддержке, была частично восстановлена.
Нет ничего вечного в этом мире. Величественные руины Аптеры – прекрасное тому подтверждение. Цивилизации, города рождаются, развиваются, умирают, оставляя только память. Но Аптера оставляет не только память. Местные жители, порой, находят на территории города золото. Золото древней Аптеры.

The fort was built by the Ottomans to control the valley of Vamos, which was amid the passage to Chania. Together with the other towers built by the Turks in Vamos, it controlled the gulf of Souda and supported the nearby fort Izzedin.

The 3 B's on the road from Aptera ancients to Souda Bay - Trip with BMW in Chania, Crete, Greece
This small trip is our first trip and the video that the idea started. We started from the archaeological place of Aptera in Chania, Crete, Greece and ended to the Souda bay, where the boat ships to Athens.

What is the 3 B's ?
Well, it is very simple.
The one B is my name, Bill, the second B is my lovely Baby, my wife and the third B is my other love my BMW.
The three of us, go all around Greece and make some trips, some of them longs, some other shorts, but always the 3 B's together. Never seperated. Because, I don't want to leave my BMW and my wife never leaves me ???? Till now, no problem ????
One day we went for a trip, to make a video for my wife's calligraphy, in an archaeological place. While we were returning back, my wife start shooting video with jimbal on the BMW. And, that's it... The idea of the 3 B's just started....
So, we decided to show you our long or short trips, everywhere we go. In the city, to the mountains, to the beach, on the national roads, to the farms. Everywhere...
