Olympic Games were a series of competitions held between representatives of several city-states and kingdoms from Ancient Greece, which featured mainly athletic but also combat and chariot racing events. During the Olympic games all struggles against the participating city-states were postponed until the games were finished. The origin of these Olympics is shrouded in mystery and legend. One of the most popular myths identifies Heracles and his father Zeus as the progenitors of the Games. According to legend, it was Heracles who first called the Games Olympic and established the custom of holding them every four years. A legend persists that after Heracles completed his twelve labors, he built the Olympic stadium as an honor to Zeus. Following its completion, he walked in a straight line for 200 steps and called this distance a stadion (Greek: στάδιον, Latin: stadium, stage), which later became a unit of distance. Another myth associates the first Games with the ancient Greek concept of Olympic truce (ἐκεχειρία, ekecheiria). The most widely accepted date for the inception of the Ancient Olympics is 776 BC; this is based on inscriptions, found at Olympia, of the winners of a footrace held every four years starting in 776 BC. The Ancient Games featured running events, a pentathlon (consisting of a jumping event, discus and javelin throws, a foot race and wrestling), boxing, wrestling, and equestrian events. Tradition has it that Coroebus, a cook from the city of Elis, was the first Olympic champion.
The Olympics were of fundamental religious importance, featuring sporting events alongside ritual sacrifices honoring both Zeus (whose famous statue by Phidias stood in his temple at Olympia) and Pelops, divine hero and mythical king of Olympia. Pelops was famous for his chariot race with King Oenomaus of Pisatis. The winners of the events were admired and immortalized in poems and statues. The Games were held every four years, and this period, known as an Olympiad, was used by Greeks as one of their units of time measurement. The Games were part of a cycle known as the Panhellenic Games, which included the Pythian Games, the Nemean Games, and the Isthmian Games.
The Olympic Games reached their zenith in the 6th and 5th centuries BC, but then gradually declined in importance as the Romans gained power and influence in Greece. There is no consensus on when the Games officially ended, the most common-held date is 393 AD, when the emperor Theodosius I declared that all pagan cults and practices be eliminated. Another date cited is 426 AD, when his successor Theodosius II ordered the destruction of all Greek temples. After the demise of the Olympics, they were not held again until the late 19th century.

RHODES GREECE TRAVEL VLOG - LINDOS ACROPOLIS - VALLEY OF THE BUTTERFLIES - BEACHES - DONKEY RIDE
RHODES GREECE is one of the most famous islands in history. This video takes you to the top sites on the island of Rhodes. The cities of Rhodes, and Lindos, and a trek through the Valley of the Butterflies are showcased.
Rhodes is a Greek island steeped in history, there is much to see here beyond the beaches. We start our tour of the island in Rhodes Old Town. Most of what you’ll see in Rhodes Town was constructed in the 14th century by the Knights of St. John, who occupied the island for 200 years.
This video takes you to Lindos to see the impressive Ancient Acropolis towering over the town. While it’s possible to head up to the Acropolis on foot, we opted for the donkey ride for the steep ascent. After our visit to the Acropolis we hung out on the beautiful Lindos Beach with crystal clear refreshing water.
Every summer, butterflies known as Jersey Tiger Moths (Euplagia quadripunctaria rhodosensis) visit the numerous Oriental Sweetgum trees of this valley in Rhodes island in order to spend the last stage of their life cycle! This is a must see if you are on Rhodes Greece. Petaloudes or Valley of the Butterflies is a cool excursion.

Rhodes Island, Greece - part 3 (Rhodes town) / Rodos, Rhodos /
One of the tourist hotspots of Greece, Rhodes (1412 sq km) is situated in the eastern Aegean Sea and is the largest of the Dodecanese islands. More than half of its inhabitants (island population now well over 100,000) live in the town of Rhodes (also spelled Rhodos, or Rodos). Rhodes town is still famous worldwide for the legendary Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
On the hill of Aghios Stephanos (Monte Smith) stands the Acropolis of ancient town, where the remains of the temples of Athena Polias, of the Pythian Apollo and of Zeus can still be seen (as well as the restored theatre and stadium dating from 3rd century BC).
Also known as the town of the Crusaders, the medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. The Knights of Saint John built the fortifications in the 14th-15th century to protect the town. The northern part (known as Castello, or Kollakio) served as an administrative centre and as the residential quarter of the Knights (the Street of the Knights is one of the most beautiful spots of the old town); the other part, much larger, is known as Hora and includes the commercial centre of the town, where the Greeks, the Jews and the Westerners had their dwellings.
At the entrance of Mandraki harbour, the Saint Nicholas fort, the lighthouse, and the bronze reindeers atop tall columns - characteristic landmarks of Rhodes - can be seen.
Modern Rhodes has nothing special, but the Italian buildings near Mandraki old harbour are worth a visit; in the same area, the Mosque of Mourad Reis is one of interesting remnants of almost 400 years of Turkish presence on the island.

Island of RHODES: EXPLORING a historic, neglected MUSLIM CEMETERY (GREECE) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go to the beautiful Greek island of Rhodes and let's visit the historic (plus, abandoned and neglected) Murad Reis Mosque and the adjacent cemetery.
The mosque was built in 1524 just after the Ottoman conquest of Rhodes and is named after Murat Reis (or Murad there’s no definitive spelling) who was an Ottoman naval commander. Born in Rhodes to Albanian parents he is buried in the cemetery. His tomb is still there and for many years Ottoman sailors would visit for good luck on their voyages.
There’s a decayed elegance to the graveyard, next to the mosque, with its unique Turkish gravestones. The ones that have turbans are male and the more pineapple shaped ones are women. They are ornately carved and look long neglected.
If you’ve got an hour to spare and are looking for a place to get away from the tourists, take a wander around under the eucalyptus trees and enjoy this very historical place.
Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is known for its beach resorts, ancient ruins and remnants of its occupation by the Knights of St. John during the Crusades. The city of Rhodes has an Old Town featuring the medieval Street of the Knights and the castlelike Palace of the Grand Masters. Captured by the Ottomans and then held by the Italians, the palace is now a history museum.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Almost 500 video clips were recorded on a Sony HDR-GW55 and a Sony FDR-AX53, as well as about 1000 images with a Sony DSLR-A350. In addition, there is 6 hours Video on a Mini 805 Dash Cam and approximately 4 hours continuous Video on Actioncam from various dives and adrenaline speedboat tours, there are also footage taken with mobile phone and Ipad
