Το θέατρο του Άργους, χωρητικότητας περίπου 20.000 θεατών, συγκαταλέγεται στα μεγαλύτερα αρχαία θέατρα στην Ελλάδα. Βρίσκεται στους πρόποδες της νοτιοανατολικής πλευράς του λόφου του κάστρου, σε σημείο που συνδεόταν με την αγορά, δέσποζε πάνω από την αρχαία πόλη και ήταν ορατό από τον Αργολικό κόλπο. Στο χώρο προϋπήρχαν διάσπαρτα μικρά ιερά, όπως αυτά των Διοσκούρων και του Διός Ευβουλέως, τα οποία δεν καταπατήθηκαν κατά την κατασκευή του μνημείου. Το θέατρο οικοδομήθηκε κατά την ελληνιστική εποχή, στις αρχές του 3ου αι. π.Χ. και αντικατέστησε το παλαιότερο της πόλης, που βρισκόταν περίπου 100 μ. νοτιότερα και είχε κτιστεί τον 5ο αι. π.Χ. Κατασκευάσθηκε πιθανόν για να φιλοξενήσει τους αγώνες μουσικής και δράματος των πανελλήνιων αγώνων των Νεμέων, που τότε μεταφέρθηκαν οριστικά στην πόλη του Άργους από το ιερό του Δία στην Νεμέα, ενώ περίπου την ίδια εποχή μεταφέρθηκαν στο Άργος και τα Ηραία. Ο αρχαιότερος αγώνας των Νεμέων, που τεκμηριωμένα γνωρίζουμε ότι έλαβε μέρος στο θέατρο του Άργους, ήταν αυτός των κιθαρωδών το 205 π.Χ. Στο μνημείο πραγματοποιούνταν επίσης πολιτικές συνεδριάσεις, όπως η Σύνοδος της Αχαϊκής Συμπολιτείας, που γινόταν τακτικά κατά τον 2ο αι. π.Χ.
Το τεράστιο κοίλο του θεάτρου είναι στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος του λαξευμένο στο βράχο και χωριζόταν με δύο διαζώματα σε τρία οριζόντια τμήματα και με κλίμακες σε τέσσερις κερκίδες, που αντιστοιχούσαν στις φυλές του Άργους. Στο κεντρικό τμήμα του είναι λαξευμένες στο βράχο 83 σειρές εδωλίων, ενώ περίπου στο μέσο του συμπληρώνεται και στις δύο πλευρές με πρόσθετες σειρές εδωλίων στερεωμένων σε τεχνητά αναχώματα, τα οποία συγκρατούν αναλημματικοί τοίχοι, κτισμένοι με τον άνισο ισοδομικό τρόπο. Η ορχήστρα ήταν επίσης στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος της λαξευμένη στο βράχο. Αρχικά ήταν κυκλική, με διάμετρο 26 μ. και στο κέντρο της δημιουργήθηκαν δύο ανάγλυφες κατασκευές, ένας κύκλος και δύο εφαπτόμενες γραμμές για την καθοδήγηση των μετακινήσεων των χορών: κυκλικών στους διθυράμβους και ευθύγραμμων στις τραγωδίες και κωμωδίες. Η «χαρώνεια κλίμακα», ένας υπόγειος διάδρομος, ένωνε την ορχήστρα με τα αποδυτήρια και εξυπηρετούσε την εμφάνιση των νεκρών και των χθόνιων θεοτήτων κατά τις παραστάσεις. Το σκηνικό οικοδόμημα στην αρχική του μορφή ήταν κτισμένο με καλά επεξεργασμένους ασβεστόλιθους. Περιλάμβανε το προσκήνιο (24,40 x 2,50 μ.), διακοσμημένο στην εσωτερική του πλευρά με ιωνική κιονοστοιχία, τη σκηνή πάνω από τα αποδυτήρια στο ισόγειο, και μία στοά στην πρόσοψη με δωρική κιονοστοιχία (24 x 5,60 μ.).
Στα ρωμαϊκά χρόνια, κυρίως το 2ο αι. μ.Χ., την εποχή του αυτοκράτορα Αδριανού, το μνημείο επαναδιαμορφώθηκε. Εδώ φιλοξενούνταν πλέον διάφοροι εορτασμοί (Σεβάστεια, Τίτεια, Τραιάνεια, Αντινόεια) καθώς και θεάματα, όπως κυνήγι θηρίων ή μονομαχίες, που είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα την αλλαγή τόσο της ορχήστρας όσο και της σκηνής. Στο πρώτο μισό του 2ου αι. μ.Χ. το σκηνικό οικοδόμημα, κτισμένο με πλίνθους, επεκτάθηκε προς τα δυτικά, καλύπτοντας μέρος της ορχήστρας. Το προσκήνιο μετατράπηκε σε διώροφο λογείο, επενδυμένο με μάρμαρο και κοσμημένο με κορινθιακές κιονοστοιχίες, ψηφιδωτά και αγάλματα σε κόγχες. Για την προστασία των θεατών από τον ήλιο τοποθετήθηκε ένα ύφασμα πάνω από τμήμα του κοίλου και για την ασφάλειά τους κατά τα θεάματα, ένα δίκτυ μπροστά στην προεδρία, και τα δύο στηριγμένα σε εσοχές λαξευμένες στο βράχο. Τον 3ο αι. μ.Χ. προστέθηκε μία εξέδρα με τρία μαρμάρινα καθίσματα για τους επισημότερους θεατές, όπως τον αντιπρόσωπο του αυτοκράτορα ή τους οργανωτές των θεαμάτων, και τον 4ο αι. μ.Χ. κατασκευάσθηκε στην ορχήστρα μία τεχνητή λίμνη για αθλοπαιδιές στο νερό και παραστάσεις ναυμαχιών. Το θέατρο εγκαταλείφθηκε οριστικά στο τέλος του 4ου αι. μ.Χ.
Το μνημείο παρέμεινε ορατό στους επόμενους αιώνες και σχεδόν όλοι οι περιηγητές το αναφέρουν στις αφηγήσεις τους, ενώ πολλοί το σχεδίασαν. Χρησιμοποιήθηκε και πάλι, όταν στις 15 Ιουλίου 1829 πραγματοποιήθηκε σε αυτό η 4η Εθνοσυνέλευση του νέου ελληνικού κράτους, που οργάνωσε ο Ι. Καποδίστριας. Η ανασκαφική έρευνα του θεάτρου πραγματοποιήθηκε από τη Γαλλική Αρχαιολογική Σχολή Αθηνών κατά τα έτη 1890, 1930, 1954-56, 1981-82 και 1986-8, ενώ το 2004 ολοκληρώθηκε το έργο για τη στερέωση, αναστήλωση και αποκατάστασή του. Σήμερα ο χώρος του θεάτρου χρησιμοποιείται περιστασιακά για διάφορες πολιτιστικές εκδηλώσεις.
