Angel Oak is a Southern live oak (Quercus virginiana) located in Angel Oak Park on Johns Island near Charleston, South Carolina. The tree is estimated to be 400-500 years old. It stands 66.5 ft (20 m) tall, measures 28 ft (8.5 m) in circumference, and produces shade that covers 17,200 square feet (1,600 m2). Its longest branch distance is 187 ft in length. Angel Oak Tree
We were staying in James Island, SC County Park and heard about this 400 to 500 year old Oak Tree. That seems to be a LONG time for a tree and we just had to go see it. It is located on Johns Island it has the name been given the name Angel Oak. NOTE: The site says 1500 years old...This is NOT RIGHT as oaks only live to a max of 1000 years. (Very long to say the least.) This tree was tested and was found to only be 400 to 500 years old.
I asked and received permission to fly my X650 as long as I stayed outside the tree canopy as they are protecting the tree. So the video is a mix of photos and video from the quadcoptor. We surely were in awe and is worth the trip if in the area.

My recent visit to The Angle Oak Tree of Charleston, SC
Angel Oak is allegedly one of the oldest oak trees in the US and is located east of the Rockies. The tree is estimated to be more than 1500 years old. It is simply known as The Tree in some circles. It stands in a wooded area in John’s Island just outside Charleston in South Carolina. Angel Oak is a live oak which also happens to be the state’s most imposing work of nature.
With a height of more than 65 feet, Angel Oaks has shaded the area for more than 1,500 years. Historical records trace the ownership of the tree and the land on which it stands to 1717 when it was given to Abraham Waight as part of a land grant. In addition, Mr. Waight was an extremely wealthy man who also owned several plantations. The tree stayed in that family four generations. The land was also used as part of a marriage settlement between Martha W.T. Angel and Justus Angel. Today, Angel Oak serves as the focal point of a public park in South Carolina. In the modern day, Angel oak is owned by the City of Charleston and it costs nothing to marvel at the tree in John’s Island.
The tree currently has a circumference of 25 feet, a diameter spread of 160 feet and covers about 17,100 square feet of ground.
