Angkor Wat & Bayon - main temples of Angkor (Cambodia)
Angkor Wat was first a Hindu, then subsequently a Buddhist, temple complex in Cambodia and the largest religious monument in the world. The temple was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yasodharapura (present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum.
The Bayon is a well-known and richly decorated Khmer temple at Angkor in Cambodia. Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the official state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII, the Bayon stands at the centre of Jayavarman's capital, Angkor Thom. Following Jayavarman's death, it was modified and augmented by later Hindu and Theravada Buddhist kings in accordance with their own religious preferences.

A brief history of Angkor and West Baray
Angkor: a temple complex in Cambodia and one of the largest religious monuments in the world. It’s on a site of 162.6 hectares.
Originally it was constructed as Hindu temple to dedicate to the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire then it was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple toward the end of the 12th century.
It was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yasodharapura, present-day Angkor.
West Baray:
The largest artificial reservoir (8 x 2.2km) in the Angkor Park, called the West Baray is located near Angkor Thom city. In ancient times, the Baray was supplied by fresh water that came from two main sources: The Siem Reap and Puok Rivers. The reservoir was probably built by the great king, Suryavarman I, during whose reign the whole Angkor Empire was greatly expanded. This construction was finished in the second half of the 11th century by king Udayadityavarman II, who built, in the centre of the West Baray, a small temple called West Mebon on an island where the bronze statue of the ‘Reclining Vishnu’ was found.

Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia, Cambodge
Angkor Wat (Khmer: អង្គរវត្ត) is a Hindu, then subsequently Buddhist temple complex in Cambodia and the largest religious monument in the world. The temple was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yasodharapura (Khmer: យសោធរបុរៈ, present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Breaking from the Shaivism tradition of previous kings, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to Vishnu. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious center since its foundation -- first Hindu, then Buddhist. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia,[1] appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.
Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the temple mountain and the later galleried temple, based on early Dravidian Architecture, with key features such as the Jagati. It is designed to represent Mount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology: within a moat and an outer wall 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) long are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the west; scholars are divided as to the significance of this. The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs, and for the numerous devatas adorning its walls.
The modern name, Angkor Wat, means Temple City or City of Temples in Khmer; Angkor, meaning city or capital city, is a vernacular form of the word nokor (នគរ), which comes from the Sanskrit word nagara (नगर).[2] Wat is the Khmer word for temple grounds, derived from the Pali word vatta (वत्त).[3] Prior to this time the temple was known as Preah Pisnulok (Vara Vishnuloka in Sanskrit), after the posthumous title of its founder.[4]

Bakong (Khmer temple), Angkor, Siem Reap, Cambodia
Bakong is the first official state temple constructed at Angkor. It was completed in 881 by King Indravarman I, some 75 years after the foundation of the Khmer empire. Bakong is located in an area approximately 15 kilometers southeast of Siem Reap that today is alled Roluos. At the time of its foundation, the temple of Bakong belonged to the Khmer capital city of Hariharalaya, and functioned as an official state temple. A few years after the its foundation, however, King Yasovarman I moved the capital of the empire to the area north of Siem Reap that is today called Angkor Thom, where he founded a new capital city called Yasodharapura.
Bakong is a temple pyramid constructed of grey stone and originally dedicated to Shiva. Eight reddish brick temple towers were built around the pyramid. The tower atop the pyramid was added much later, probably in the 12th century. Its style is that of the 12th century temple Angkor Wat. Bakong is the largest of a group of three temples that today comprise what is called the Roluos Group: the others are Preah Ko and Lolei, both of which feature red brick temple towers similar to those of the Bakong but have no pyramid. All three temples date from the second half of the 9th century, and all three originally belonged to the Khmer capital of Hariharalaya.
This video is about the temple, with an emphasis on the beautiful sculpted lintels that can be observed on the brick towers. The music is Kama Phal by Naked Planet.

Exploring Angkor Wat at the Temples of Angkor, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia
Early in the morning we left our Cambodian guesthouse at 5 am to head off by tuk-tuk to explore the magnificent Angkor Wat located in Angkor (Temples of Angkor), Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. Although we arrived while it was still dark outside we were hardly the only ones here to witness the sunset, as tourists came in by the bus and autorickshaw load to capture this stunning temple during hours most would still be sleeping. We initially found a nice spot to take the classic 'pond shot' before it became too overcrowded. From there we stated walking into the temple for a more up close and intimate view. We marveled at sheer size of the entire complex - the moat itself giving indication of how significant a place this once was and still is today. We took our time examining the bas-relief carvings and intricate details that are apparent only when viewed close up in person.

Finally on the way out we reflect on our experiences. Audrey was impressed as this was her very first visit. Even though Samuel has been 4 times he still gets goosebumps every single time. Although visiting in April, when it's the hottest time of the year in Cambodia, wasn't the wisest decision, we still managed to move around without feeling too dehydrated. For those looking to visit the temples without the mass crowds we suggest coming around lunch time when most package tourists are either templed out or having lunch. It's amazing how much better an experience it is when you're not bumping shoulders with others.

Visit ANGKOR WAT temple Siem Reap, Cambodia
Angkor Wat Temple consolidates two fundamental plans of Khmer sanctuary design: the sanctuary mountain and the later galleried sanctuary, in light of early Indian Hindu engineering, with key highlights, for example, the Jagati. It is intended to speak to Mount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu folklore: inside a canal and an external divider 3.6 kilometers (2.2 mi) long are three rectangular exhibitions, each raised over the following. At the focal point of the sanctuary stands a quincunx of towers. Not at all like most Angkorian sanctuaries, Angkor Wat is arranged toward the west; researchers are partitioned with regards to the criticalness of this. The sanctuary is respected for the greatness and congruity of the engineering, its broad bas-reliefs and for the various devatas (gatekeeper spirits) enhancing its dividers. The cutting edge name, Angkor Wat, signifies City Temple; Angkor is a vernacular type of the word nokor which originates from the Sanskrit word nagara meaning capital or city. Wat is the Khmer word for sanctuary. Preceding this time the sanctuary was known as Preah Pisnulok, after the post mortem title of its author, Suryavarman II.
