Although the war was between Britain and the two Boer Republics of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, the whole South African population became directly or indirectly entangled in the war. The Department of Arts and Culture is launching its Reconciliation Month's activities for the year 2015. Kicking off the events under the theme Bridging the divide: Building a common South African nationhood towards a national developmental state', the Anglo-Boer War Museum is where the event is talking place. We are talking to Minister Nathi Mthethwa.

In this clip we look at the Women's Memorial and the displays in the grounds of the War Museum of the Boer Republics followed by a walk around the Bloemfontein cemetery. The inscriptions are printed in We Wander the Battlefields and other statues are included. Emily Hobhouse, General C de Wiet, Rev. Kestell, and President Steyn are buried at the foot of the Vrouemonument (the Women's Memorial).

Documentary overview of the Anglo Boer War Museum in Bloemfontein, South Africa - Part 1 of 2. The Museum was established, along with the Women's Memorial, to remember and pay tribute to men, women and children from all races, who fought and died in the war during 1899-1902 in South Africa.
Women's Monument to (25,000!) Anglo-Boer War Concentration Camp Victims (Bloemfontein, South Africa)

The first concentration camps were in ~1900 and almost exclusively White-on-White. Did you know that? Neither did I.
In Bloemfontein South Africa, just 20-30 years after their defeat/surrender in the Anglo-Boer War, the (mostly Dutch-derived, the first boat-full of them having arrived in 1652, ~250 years prior!) Afrikaner Boer (meaning farmer) people still living there set up this Women's Monument to remember the (mostly) women and kids who died of starvation, thirst and/or sickness in British-run concentration camps. (I s$%t you not!)
See the Boer fighters were organized into essentially-guerrilla commando militias. And they kept kicking the butts of the British who out-numbered and out-resourced them 10-to-1.
But while they were away out butt-kicking someplace, the wives were back on the farms taking care of things. So the British said screw this, and just burned/dynamited the farms, killed the livestock, and took the wives and kids hostage in these concentration camps.
This unplugged the Boer fighters provisions-wise, but that wasn't really the whole plan.
Taking the wives and kids hostage in this way, and passive-aggressively allowing them to die-off in bureaucratic fashion (Oh dang, we ran out of food for the prisoners again. --sound familiar?) not just humiliated the men emotionally and spiritually (worse than unbelievers, right?), but of course gave them dang good reasons to give up and surrender, and quickly, which they did.
You might just have to agree that genocide worked. But try not to think about it.
No wait. I mean: YES PLEASE DO try to think about it!
(And what if they'd thought of this when fighting General Washington and his people in the Revolutionary War, hmm?)
120-year Commemoration of the Anglo-Boer (South African) War International Conference 2019

Venue: The War Museum, Bloemfontein, South Africa.
October 2019 marked the start of the 120-year commemoration of the Anglo-Boer (South African) War. In recent years the study and interpretation of the war had created new insights of the complexities that this particular conflict had on the South African population. In accordance with the War Museums vision the conference represented the inclusivity and suffering of all communities, thus also propagating the message that negotiation is preferable to war. Although the emphasis was inherently on historical interpretations of the war, the conference included a multi-disciplinary approach. The 2019 conference wished to assemble historians and other scholars researching the diverse dimensions of the Anglo-Boer (South African) War.

Anglo Boer War
One of the most significant events in the history of South Africa was the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. Although the protagonists were Britain and the two Boer Republics, the population of South Africa as a whole became embroiled in the war either directly or indirectly.
The War Museum in Bloemfontein does not only give the visitor insight into the Boer War through it`s unique art collection, dioramas and exhibits but also brings the visitor closer to understanding the background against which the war took place. The course and development of the war unfolds in front of the visitor as you progress through the museum. You are also afforded a glimpse into the life in the concentration and also prisoner-of-war camps.

February 8 - Some of Bloemfontein's landmark heritage sites are undergoing significant changes. The National Women's Monument and the War Museum are being re-launched to represent a more inclusive South African history, one that honours all the women and children, black and white who died during the Anglo-Boer War.
