Samudra the elephant turns 10
Asian elephant Samudra turned 10 years old at the Oregon Zoo today, and it’s safe to say birthday boys don’t come much bigger. The 7,545-pound bull is known for his love of water – his name means “ocean” in Sanskrit – and can often be found swimming in the 160,000-gallon pool at Elephant Lands.
“Samudra is such a happy-go-lucky elephant,” said Shawn Finnell, the zoo’s senior elephant keeper. “He’s always been very social and he loves to play with his sister Lily and the rest of the herd.”
Samudra, born Aug. 23, 2008, was the first third-generation elephant born in the United States.

Committed to conservation, Oregon Zoo is currently working to save endangered California condors, Oregon silverspot and Taylor's checkerspot butterflies, western pond turtles and Oregon spotted frogs. Other projects include studies on Asian elephants, polar bears, orangutans and giant pandas. Celebrating 125 years of community support, the zoo relies in part on donations through the Oregon Zoo Foundation to undertake these and many other animal welfare, education and sustainability programs.

Cannon Beach was so spectacular in person especially at sunset with lots of fun educational experiences and activities for families in the surrounding areas.

We spent 2 nights at the Hallmark Cannon Beach hotel with the 2 bedroom with View room. We highly recommend this hotel & room and wish we stayed at least a day longer. Tip: Rooms on the southern side have more direct views of Haystack rock.
Our favorite experience was walking to the rock at sunset during low tide. The kids loved touching the anemones, barnacles and other sea creatures of the tide pools. It was also amazingly beautiful! We bought firewood & fire starter kit from the Hallmark reception. They even offer marshmallows and sticks for sale. And we saved our spot while we explored the tide pools. We loved this so much that we did it both of our sunsets here.
A fun day trip was driving south to the Tillamook Creamery. Yes the Tillamook cheese, milk, butter and other dairy products we love!! It was a great educational activity with good grilled cheese sandwiches and ice cream! However, if you like seafood... across the street of the creamery was one of the better fish and chips and clam chowder bowls I’ve ever eaten. And I eat seafood often! The Tillamook creamery is about a 40 minute drive south of Cannon Beach. The drive has beautiful view points to stop along the way.
After the creamery we drove to Seaside, which is a cute town about 10 minutes north of Cannon Beach. We went there for the Aquarium as Amalin and Brody just love sea animals.
At the end of the day, we headed down to the beach for another beautiful sunset.

Asian elephant Samudra has a pool party
After a long, cold winter, spring has finally sprung at the Oregon Zoo, and one resident in particular is diving in headfirst — trunk and all. Samudra, the 9-year-old adolescent male of the Asian elephant family, made a splash today in the pool at Elephant Lands.
With the sun shining down and temperatures reaching a warm 70 degrees, the 7,500-pound pachyderm was eager to cool off in the pool. He dove for treats of apple and honeydew melon, and playfully splashed with his feet and trunk. After a quick break in the sun, Samudra plunged back into the 160,000-gallon pool for another swim.
He loves to play in the water, said Bob Lee, who oversees the zoo elephant program. Now that the weather is warming up, I think Samudra and the rest of the family will be spending a lot of time poolside.
Samudra took his afternoon dip in the larger of two pools at Elephant Lands, which is 80 feet wide and 12 feet deep — perfect for a bull elephant who enjoys a good dive. Both pools incorporate state-of-the-art filtration and treatment systems that completely filter the water every hour to maintain quality and allow re-use. The pool also includes a play jet that sprays bursts of water, controlled remotely from a keeper presentation area.
The zoo's award-winning Elephant Lands habitat, which opened in 2015, was designed through the elephants' eyes to maximize the welfare, activity and choice of each individual, with a variety of feeding methods that mimic the grazing habits of wild elephants — and plenty of opportunities to go for a swim.
The Oregon Zoo is recognized worldwide for its Asian elephant program, which has spanned more than 60 years. Considered highly endangered in their range countries, Asian elephants are threatened by habitat loss, conflict with humans and disease. It is estimated that just 40,000 to 50,000 elephants remain in fragmented populations from India to Borneo. The zoo supports a broad range of efforts to help wild elephants and has established a $1 million endowment fund supporting Asian elephant conservation.

Grant's Getaways: Winter Bird Watching in Oregon
Winter in Oregon is the perfect time for bird watching. Flocks of Tundra Swans seem to fill the sky on six-foot-wingspans and then glide in for a well-deserved break.
The swans can be seen across the state at the following places:
Sauvie Island Wildlife Area. The 12,000 acre state refuge can be a fine place to admire waterfowl from a distance.
Fernhill Wetlands in Washington County is a prime hideout to catch a view to tundra swans.
Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge in Polk County where the visitor access is easy just off State Highway 22, west of Salem.
Further afield, try the Klamath Wildlife Area in southern Oregon where they swan show is reliable all winter long until the big birds head back to the arctic in March.

How BOONDOCKING Works In WASHINGTON State//Exploring TIDE-POOLS, Sea-caves & Hay Stack Rock
Today we left Portland Or and Heading toward Seatle Washington. On our way, we decided to stop at Cannon each to explore the tide-pools, sea caves and haystack rock. We didn't find all that many tide-pools, but we did find a TON of Jellyfish. Lots of fun!
Afterward when decided to stop a gorgeous boondock place in Washington and learned that boondock works a bit differently here than it does in other states.

Hello friends, We are a family of four, plus two cats.
We lived what most would call the American dream in our sticks and bricks house until September 2016 when we decided to sell everything we owned, buy a fifth-wheel and travel the United States.
Life was great! We visited 18 states, experienced things we never thought possible, hiked through canyons, seen dolphins in the wild, sat on a cactus and learned SO much together as a family.
These experiences lead us to learn that less is more and making memories together as a family is far more important than anything we could buy.
After a little over a year in the RV, we were ready to live with even less. It was time to jump into our next adventure.
So, In February 2018 we sold both our fifth-wheel and Truck, bought a car and now travel around the U.S staying in different hotels, cabins, and Airbnb's along the way.
Mackenzie is 9 years old and the baby of the family. She's the kind of girl the can make friends with a fly on the wall. Some of her favorite things to do are dance and bake. Her goals in life are to own her own bakery and to find the fastest slide in the world.
Xavier is 11 years old and an amazing big brother. He loves video games, math, and learning anything and everything about animals. His goals in life are to create his own video game and to also find the fastest slide, in the world.
He's the man that makes our travel life possible! He's supercomputer smart and constantly questions everything. He's a proud daddy, entrepreneur and enjoys playing video games with the kids in his spare time.
I'm the mommy, teacher, cook, and organizer of the family. I have an obsession with anything nutrition and I'm constantly learning something new. In my spare time, you can find me....... Yeah, I don't have spare time.
Meow, I'm Roo, The real baby of the family. My mom always tells me I'm the Happy go lucky one. I love to snuggle with my human siblings and I don't like to be left alone. Some of my favorite things to do are chase bugs, suntan and play with the different things I find around the house.
Meow, I'm Shiva, I like to think of myself as a high-class kitty, I'm proud of who I am. I like to hang out with my dad while he's getting his work done. His computer is always within view of the kitchen, that's where they keep the food. Some of my favorite things to do are eat, sleep and eat some more. Food is so yummy!

Three puppies were submerged in rock solid tar where they had been stuck, unable to move even an inch for many hours. They were terrified and being unable to move, could only cry out in fear.

9 Places You Should Never Swim In!
The most dangerous places you should never swim! These are 9 of the world's most treacherous, life-endangering waters humans have ever seen.
From water so hot it could boil you alive to a lake filled with acid, here are some places you should never go swimming:
9. Lake Hillier
This bright pink lake is located in Australia. It is about two thousand feet long and eight hundred twenty feet wide. This strange body of water is a saline lake, meaning it has a significantly high concentration of salt. It was discovered in 1802 by Matthew Flinders, who described it as “...a rose colour, the water of which...was so saturated with salt that sufficient quantities were crystallized near the shores to load a ship.” Pure white salt lines Lake Hillier’s shore. Due to its extreme salinity, there are no animals living within the lake. The only thing that lives here are tiny organisms, one of which is Dunaliella salina; this is what gives Lake Hillier its salt content. It also contains red halophilic bacteria, which gives it its unique hue. Although you can technically go for a dip in this lake without adverse effects, you should never drink the water… ingesting too much saltwater can cause a fatal outcome. So, don’t allow the lake’s rose-wine tint trick you into taking a sip.
8. Yellowstone Thermal Pools
Yellowstone National Park’s thermal pools are just one of the numerous reasons that millions of tourists flock to the area every year. However, even though these hot springs and geysers look very inviting, you should by no means get too close to them. There have been various injuries and fatalities due to people wanting a closer look at these natural wonders. In June 2006, a six-year-old boy endured significant burns after slipping off of a boardwalk near Old Faithful. He fell into the two-hundred-fifty degree Fahrenheit water and luckily survived, even though his injuries were severe. According to the Yellowstone website, over twenty visitors have met their demise after slipping near these thermal pools. In June 2016, a twenty-three-year-old man from Portland, Oregon lost his life after falling into the hot water next to Porkchop Geyser. He and his sister had strayed about six hundred feet from the boardwalk when the incident took place. One of the park’s geologists, Hank Heasler, noted, “Geothermal attractions are one of the most dangerous natural features in Yellowstone, but I don’t sense that awareness in either visitors or employees.” There are warning signs posted throughout the park as there are over ten thousand of these boiling pools. Yellowstone’s chief safety officer, Brandon Gauthier, said, “We try to educate people starting when they come through the gate… There are many risks in Yellowstone. It’s something you’ve got to respect and pay attention to.” So, keep that in mind if you ever visit this national park, and please don’t take a dip in the hot spring.
