ASGT - 50 Years Of Theatre Under the Stars

Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre (ASGT) is proud to share our 50th anniversary documentary video, featuring interviews, stories, video clips, photos, and articles from our first 50 years of theatre under the stars.

Founded in 1966, ASGT presents musical theatre (featuring live music) in a unique, intimate setting in historic Annapolis each summer. An outdoor community theatre led by volunteers, ASGT celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016, marking the occasion with a dynamic performance season, a gala event, a musical retrospective show, and other special events.

This documentary was made possible through a strategic impact grant provided by the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County. ASGT thanks the Arts Council for their ongoing, generous support.

ASGT also receives financial support from the Maryland State Arts Council and numerous individual and business donors from the local community. Thank you so much.

SUMMARY
=======
Annapolis () is the capital of the U.S. state of Maryland, as well as the county seat of Anne Arundel County. Situated on the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn River, 25 miles (40 km) south of Baltimore and about 30 miles (50 km) east of Washington, D.C., Annapolis is part of the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. Its population was measured at 38,394 by the 2010 census.
This city served as the seat of the Confederation Congress (former Second Continental Congress) and temporary national capital of the United States in 1783–1784. At that time, General George Washington came before the body convened in the new Maryland State House and resigned his commission as commander of the Continental Army. A month later, the Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris of 1783, ending the American Revolutionary War, with Great Britain recognizing the independence of the United States.
The city and state capitol was also the site of the 1786 Annapolis Convention, which issued a call to the states to send delegates for the Constitutional Convention to be held the following year in Philadelphia. Over 220 years later, the Annapolis Peace Conference, was held in 2007. Annapolis is the home of St. John's College, founded 1696; the United States Naval Academy, established 1845, is adjacent to the city limits.

Lipitz Lecture: Seeing the Unseen Landscape

Dan Bailey, Professor of Visual Arts, UMBC

In this talk, Dan Bailey considers human scale, perception, and natural landscape, which are central to his current work on long-duration photography of landscapes and a reconstruction of Baltimore’s geographic past. Seemingly disparate, his two projects, Slow Exposure and Early Baltimore, encourage us to examine the meanings of viewpoint – focused versus fuzzy – and how the “long view” can be used to augment “thinly-sliced” data. In Slow Exposure, Bailey attempts to slow down the process of landscape photography with one goal being to simulate shutter speeds measured in centuries, not seconds. In Early Baltimore, he re-creates the 3D landscape of Baltimore, circa 1820, for use in public history programs and as a tool for scholars.

Bio: Dan Bailey is a Professor of Visual Arts at UMBC and the 2018-19 Lipitz Professor. His teaching and research encompass the fields of animation, interactive media, and time-based media. Bailey’s films and animations have received numerous national and international awards and have been included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, France. During a Windgrove residency in Tasmania, Australia in 2017, he initiated research on long-duration photography of landscapes, which is part of his ongoing project, Slow Exposure. While director of the UMBC Imaging Research Center for 17 years, Bailey developed a fully digital model of Baltimore City in the early nineteenth century. Early Baltimore uses contemporary GIS techniques to re-create lost terrains and landscapes. Both projects are part of his Lipitz award work.

Congratulations to longtime high school baseball coach James Hudson, on being inducted into the Delaware High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. The longtime coach, former teacher and administrator, and current Indian River School Board of Education member graduated from SCHS in 1971.

The grand opening of the new CHEER Center in Milton is Monday, complete with entertainment, a luncheon, tours, door prizes and more. The kitchen will better serve seniors receiving Meals on Wheels, and a dining and meeting room is availabloe for rental for weddings, anniversaries and parties.

The OC Air Show has announced the third of their headliners. Joining the US Navy Blue Angels and the Breitling Jet Team will be the US Air Force F-22 Raptor demo team! Some of the top civilian and military performers will fill the skies over the boardwalk of the Ocean City beach!

Three sub-orbital rockets were launched from Wallops Island Flight Facility, and successfully tracked by three destroyers in the Atlantic. The Department of Defense says the Aegis Ballistics Weapons Defense System worked perfectly in acquiring the live targets and simulated guided missile engagements.

Kent County Theater Guild presents Doubt at the patchwork Playhouse in Dover. Director Becky Craft says the play is about the tenous line between a priest and students.

The Bayside Quilters of the Eastern Shore has chosen the Oxford Community Center for this summer's three-day bi-annual quilt show called Quilts in the Garden. If you're interested in finding out more about quilting, there are about 180 members who meet the second Wednesday of each month at the Easton Fire Department.
