YakRu enduro 2017 - Annapurna Challenge
YAK RU ENDURO
HIGH-ALTITUDE MTB ADVENTURE
Yak Ru Enduro
7-17 October, 2017
The Yak Ru Enduro is a 3-day mountain bike enduro race that will test riders on beautiful, steep, and rugged trails between 3200-4300m (10600-14200ft) elevation in the Manang region of the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal. The Annapurna Range – boasting huge glaciers, sheer rock faces, and majestic snow-capped peaks - towers over the entire course, providing a stunning backdrop for the ultimate multi-day enduro adventure.
Riders race ‘blind’ on sections of breathtaking terrain - pine and birch forest singletrack, high-speed flow through alpine pastures, rocky switchbacks, steep ridgelines, and generations-old trails passing remote settlements and religious monuments. Participants wishing to challenge themselves and explore one of the most magical landscapes to ride a mountain bike in will be enthralled by the terrain the Yak Ru passes through.
Yak Ru’s enduro racing format allows riders of various abilities - from pros to amateurs – to mingle, swap stories, and take in the amazing scenery, while still allowing themselves to push their limits. Only certain sections of the race are timed: these mainly downhill stages have been selected as amongst the very best trails that the Manang reion has to offer, and will be raced ‘blind’ - without prior practice. This area is also culturally rich and boasts diverse wildlife, affording riders an all-encompassing Nepali experience during their time here.
The special demands of racing in such thin air require all riders from lower altitudes to do an untimed group ‘acclimatization’ ride of 15km to reach our main basecamp, the township of Manang, the day before racing commences.
Over the 3 racing days, riders will be covering 40km of riding and challenged on 8-10 timed stages. Due to the steepness and remoteness of the course, riders can be expected to carry/walk with their bikes for some uphill parts of the untimed transfer stages. Riders will also receive limited assistance in the form of vehicle uplifts to reach some of timed stages.
At the conclusion of racing, an untimed group ‘celebration’ ride will see us descending over 40km and over 2000m (6600ft) in a single day, a fitting post-competition wrap-up this mountain bike experience of a lifetime.

Bike Touring Nepal - Annapurna Circuit + Kathmandu to Besisahar
Nepal = little up, little down.
November 2016 bike tour with friends. Roughly 400 miles and 60k up and down. This is a rough edit of some clips I had on my phone. There was so much of the trip we didn't capture on film, but that's what memories are for.

Adventure Bicyle Touring: Annapurna Circuit, Nepal
In December 2017 I decided to take a much needed break from cycling to errrrr, cycle. After cyclle touring through India I was in need of a break from the chaos so decided to head up the world famous mountain trekking route called the Annapurna Circuit to clear the mind on my touring bike, staying clear of the lodges and instead carrying all my food, water and camping equipment. Locals warned me beforehand that I was unlikely to cross the top pass at 5416m. I was told the bike was unsuitable, too heavy (35kgs) and with it being mid winter, too cold for camping, with tempretures predicted to drop as low as minus twenty. Factor in the altitude and most gave me pretty bad odds of completing the full circuit. Were they right? Well it certainly proved an adventure

BeAlive - RJ Ripper - Full Film - Nepal MTB Champion
Rajesh Magar (RJ) learned to ride a bike at 10 years old, getting lost in the streets of outer Kathmandu. He rode his first technical trails on a bike he made himself with scraps, including; a scooter spring for suspension and piece of plumbing. His riding earned him attention on the mountain and eventually brought him the opportunity to compete and provide for his family. He has gone on to become consecutive four time national champion in Nepal.
RJ’s story is one of boundless dreaming and unstoppable determination, forged from junkyard scraps and tested on the rugged trails of the mighty Himalaya.
Since its premiere, RJ Ripper has been featured at film festivals across North America, including 5Point, Fresh Coast and most recently Banff International Film Festivals.

Nepal Mountain Bike - This is Mustang
Nepal’s Mustang is often compared to the fabled Himalayan valley of Shangri-La. Cut off from the rest of the world on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, Mustang is a high altitude desert of rich red and ocher land, deep gorges, and the world’s highest peaks set against an infinite blue sky.
Mustang is home to an endless network of ancient trails that were once used by caravans carrying salt from the Tibetan plateau to the great plains of India. In the heart of the Mustang lies the world’s deepest valley, carved by the wild waters of the Kali Gandaki river between the two giant mountains Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.
Follow Rob J Heran as he explores the solitary trails of Mustang through magical villages and mystical monasteries.
