Eastern Hills Mall - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of the Eastern Hills Mall in Clarence, NY from June 23 and 24, 2019. This is a sad dying mall that has a really interesting center corridor that is drastically different than the rest of the mall featuring an almost secret society ritual sort of motif. This mall felt wonderful to walk around.
Check out our ongoing series of dead and dying shopping malls!

Here is some info from Wikipedia. I do suggest you also check out eh much more extensive history on the mall hall of fame blog:
Eastern Hills Mall is a shopping mall located 11 miles northeast of Buffalo, New York on the western border of the Town of Clarence in Erie County, New York, United States. The name Eastern Hills refers to the very low hills that contribute to a slightly higher elevation than the bordering areas along the Onondaga Escarpment. It consists of two long wings running north and south and one short wing running east and west, which connects the north-south wings in a double L-shaped formation. A three-screen movie theater showing mainly independent films is also located in the mall, as well as a small New York State Department of Motor Vehicles office. Eastern Hills is considered by many area residents to be a dead mall and is listed on the website Deadmalls.com.
The Eastern Hills Mall was developed by the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation. The mall was originally to be named Buffalo Mall, but the name was changed to Eastern Hills Mall at the request of the town of Clarence. Fourteen stores opened by November 8, 1971, and the mall was completed by 1972. The original anchors were AM&A's, JCPenney, Sears, Jenss, Woolworth and Hengerer's. Hengerer's became Sibley's in 1981. The mall underwent an extensive overhaul in 1987 that added a food court. Originally the largest mall in the Buffalo, NY area, the mall lost that title to the Walden Galleria in 1989. Sibley's became Kaufmann's in 1990. AM&A's became The Bon-Ton in 1994. By the 1990s the mall was in a state of decline losing many national tenants. In 1997 after ceasing operations, Woolworth closed their store and later that year Jenss closed. In 1998, Burlington Coat Factory moved into the former Jenss location and remained open until 2005. Another renovation to the small east-west center concourse and food court took place in 2005, largely cosmetic in nature. New floor tile was installed in both the center concourse and food court, and imitation fireplaces, small flat screen televisions, and new seating were installed. The longer north-south concourses remained untouched during this second renovation, causing a break in a pink zig-zag floor tile line pattern, which prior to the 2005 renovation could be followed through the entire mall from end-to-end, but now remains only in the north-south concourses, broken by the new tile in the center concourse. In 2006, Federated Department Stores acquired May Company and converted all local Kaufmann's stores to Macy's. By this time, the mall was seeing a minor revival in foot traffic and featured many younger national chains. Many of these storefronts remain empty and only some have been replaced by mom-and-pop stores. Television station WBBZ-TV established its broadcast studios at the mall in 2012.
On January 6, 2016, it was announced that Macy's would be closing as part of a plan to close 36 stores nationwide. The store closed in April 2016. In April 2017, Sears closed their Auto Center. In June 2017, Niagara Emporium opened in the former Macy's space on the first floor, and stating later that they may open on the second floor in the future. On April 18, 2018, it was announced that The Bon-Ton would also be closing as it was going out of business. The store closed on August 29, 2018. On July 27, 2018, it was announced that Raymour & Flanigan would be opening in the former Bon-Ton in 2019. On September 19, 2018, Sears had sold its location in the mall back to the developers. Sears closed in December 2018 after 47 years of operation. As of 2019, JCPenney is the final remaining original mall tenant.
In March 2018, Uniland Development, a local commercial development company, agreed to purchase a stake in the mall's equity, sharing co-ownership with current owners Mountain Development Corporation. Uniland's long-term plans for the mall are to convert some of the mall's space to residential apartments and create a mixed-use development that it dubbed a lifestyle center. The Clarence Town Board approved plans for the lifestyle center in August 2018.

Ok here's the catch, the car doesn't run, is held together only by rust and mud, and has spent the last 50 years buried in a waterlogged concrete vault. Who put it there and why? Let's find out.

New Police Patrol In California Lner (1938)
Sacramento, California, United States of America.
Outside Sacramento's Capitol Building, we see policemen standing beside their motorbikes. They are inspected by their commander, Raymond Kato and then ride off and along streets in a huge formation with American flags flying from the front bikes. They do a display of synchronised motorcycle riding on a tarmac clearing, seen from above like a Busby Berkley routine.

Postage stamps and postal history of the United States
The history of postal service of the United States began with the delivery of stampless letters, whose cost was borne by the receiving person, later also encompassed pre-paid letters carried by private mail carriers and provisional post offices, and culminated in a system of universal pre-payment that required all letters to bear nationally issued adhesive postage stamps.
In the earliest days, Ship captains arriving in port with stampless mail would advertise in the local newspaper names of those having mail and for them to come collect and pay for it, if not already paid for by the sender. Postal delivery in the United States was a matter of haphazard local organization until after the Revolutionary War, when eventually a national postal system was established. Stampless letters, paid for by the receiver, and private postal systems, were gradually phased out after the introduction of adhesive postage stamps, first issued by the U.S. government post office July 1, 1847 in the denominations of five and ten cents, with the use of stamps made mandatory in 1855.

Racism, School Desegregation Laws and the Civil Rights Movement in the United States
The African-American Civil Rights Movement (1955--1968) refers to the social movements in the United States aimed at outlawing racial discrimination against black Americans and restoring voting rights to them. This article covers the phase of the movement between 1955 and 1968, particularly in the South. The emergence of the Black Power Movement, which lasted roughly from 1966 to 1975, enlarged the aims of the Civil Rights Movement to include racial dignity, economic and political self-sufficiency, and freedom from oppression by white Americans.
The movement was characterized by major campaigns of civil resistance. Between 1955 and 1968, acts of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience produced crisis situations between activists and government authorities. Federal, state, and local governments, businesses, and communities often had to respond immediately to these situations that highlighted the inequities faced by African Americans. Forms of protest and/or civil disobedience included boycotts such as the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955--1956) in Alabama; sit-ins such as the influential Greensboro sit-ins (1960) in North Carolina; marches, such as the Selma to Montgomery marches (1965) in Alabama; and a wide range of other nonviolent activities.
Noted legislative achievements during this phase of the Civil Rights Movement were passage of Civil Rights Act of 1964, that banned discrimination based on race, color, religion, or national origin in employment practices and public accommodations; the Voting Rights Act of 1965, that restored and protected voting rights; the Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965, that dramatically opened entry to the U.S. to immigrants other than traditional European groups; and the Fair Housing Act of 1968, that banned discrimination in the sale or rental of housing. African Americans re-entered politics in the South, and across the country young people were inspired to action.
Desegregation busing in the United States (also known as forced busing or simply busing) is the practice of assigning and transporting students to schools in such a manner as to redress prior racial segregation of schools, or to overcome the effects of residential segregation on local school demographics.
The Ruins of Paris, 1871
Much of central Paris was burned during the Franco-Prussian War that saw the death of the Commune. The resulting ruins of Paris at once became a tourist attraction, and the subject of remarkable photographs made for the tourist trade. The novelist Gustave Flaubert came to visit the ruins, and found in them a lesson for his contemporaries: if only they had understood the novel he had published some months earlier, Sentimental Education, this cataclysmic destruction never could have happened. Peter Brooks explores that cataclysm, and the specific role of photography in the historiography of the moment.

LECTURE: Jeannie Kenmotsu, Ph.D. - September 5, 2019
Japanese Prints Abroad in Portland: The Mary Andrews Ladd Collection
Jeannie Kenmotsu, Ph.D., Japan Foundation Assistant Curator of Japanese Art, Portland Art Museum
Japanese woodblock prints were met with an enthusiastic audience abroad in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. In Europe and the United States, tens of thousands of prints were bought and sold, exhibitions and record-breaking auctions staged, and a new passion kindled for private collectors. Most of what we know about early American print collecting has been focused on the East Coast—donations that were the basis for the world-class museum collections in Boston, New York, and Chicago. Lesser-known but just as significant was the donation of the Mary Andrews Ladd collection of Japanese prints to the Portland Art Museum in 1932. Drawing on the Museum’s archives, period records, and the collection itself, this lecture explores this transformational gift of nearly 750 Edo-period (1603–1868) woodblock prints, and expand the story of early Japanese print collecting in the United States.
Co-sponsored by the Asian Art Council.
8. Sylvia Plath: The Oven Suicides, Part 1
Some people best know Sylvia Plath for her unusual mode of suicide; others remember her for as one of the first authors to write openly about her own mental illness. But there’s even more to her than that: the early loss of her father, the obsessive desire to be an over-achiever, that time she made national news as a missing person, the desire to find a ‘perfect’ husband, and the wild betrayal she felt when that perfect husband had an affair. But what exactly caused the author of THE BELL JAR to kill herself at age 30?

Tour of Westville (New Haven) Connecticut
Westville – a neighborhood of the City of New Haven, Ct., an area Pearce Real Estate serves for buying or selling a home.
Westville is a great neighborhood to call home. Diverse, cultural, educated, community-minded are words residents use to describe this enclave. Located in the northwest corner of New Haven, Old Westville Village, designated an historical landmark, is boarded by the Yale Bowl and University-owned playing fields, the Connecticut Tennis Center where world class talent plays every August, Edgewood Park with walking trails and waterways and its own public basketball and tennis courts, Forest Road and a section of Whalley Avenue which is home to the area’s businesses, numerous cafes, bistros and restaurants such as Lena, Stone Hearth, Bella’s, and House of Chao; critically-acclaimed art galleries including the Gabriel deSilva’s Frame Shop and Kehler Liddell ; antique shops; and the famous Lyric Hall Theater, venue for lively music and scores of talented visual and performing artists.
Residential streets south of the bustling center are lush with mature trees, green lawns and large, stately homes which reflect the architectural styles of early to mid 20th century America. Take a morning run or evening stroll, as many residents do, down McKinley and Alston Avenues or on upper Chapel Street and marvel at the colonial, Tudor, bungalow, art and craft, and even Spanish-revival styles. Walk the dog or wheel the baby in the carriage to the Yale Bowl via tree-lined Cleveland Road, where one side abuts the open polo fields. Apartments and condos, built in the style of the surrounding architecture, fit right in on Fountain Street close to the commercial area. The population is as varied as the architecture: young, professional couples with children; hip artistic types; older “Villagers” who raised their families there and still enjoy the communal ambiance of the area; doctors, lawyers and bio-tech executives who drive the short distance to their workplaces in downtown New Haven. Neighbors know each other and gather together for community events such as the annual Spring ArtWalk, block watch meetings, legislative hearings on traffic control or fund raising drives. At Christmas, carolers with fire-lit lanterns walk the streets and sing in return for freshly baked goodies; at Halloween, children and their parents go door to welcoming door with their increasing heavy bags of treats.
Westville is home to two distinguished elementary (kindergarten through 7) magnet schools and the Hopkins School, a private institution founded in 1660, for grades 7 through 12. It is close to Southern Connecticut State University, the University of New Haven, and, of course, Yale University. It’s a quick drive for access to Interstates 91 and 95, as well as the Merritt Parkway. Area churches (including one in the Korean language) and synagogues, all within walking distance, schedule events for children and seniors. Community events and numerous reading programs for children are held at Mitchell Library (including classes by Literacy Volunteers of New Haven). The Library’s adjacent Beecher Park is the summer setting for Monday evening picnics and concerts with beautiful West Rock as the backdrop. The best gathering of residents is on Sunday mornings when the cafes are filled with those who brunch and then visit the area’s Farmer’s Market held at Edgewood Park for local produce and artisan wares.
Visit Westville soon. There’s a lot to like.
